Surat: The Indian Air force (IAF) plans to use Surat airfield during contingencies and for training purposes. However, bird menace around Surat airfield is a major concern to the IAF and holding it from flying its fighter aircraft from here even on occasional missions.
IAF authorities have in a letter to the state government requested it to take measures for reduced bird activity in and around the airport so as to create a safe environment for the fighter aircraft to operate.
The letter says there is a need for adequate measures to be taken for proper collection, dumping and disposal of garbage and waste around the airport. The garbage should be dumped at least 10 km away from the airport and butchers and meat sellers shifted from the area. The people should be made aware about bird hazard to the aircraft. The IAF authorities have asked the state government to intimate them about the action taken so that they can conduct an aerial and ground survey before proceeding in the matter.
