Mohali: Open dumping of waste in nearby Jagtapura has been drawing birds to the new international airport, heightening the risk of bird-hits and giving headaches to the authorities.
On Tuesday, a Jet Airways plane coming from Delhi was hit by a bird at the time of landing. While it was the first such incident at the airport that opened in October last year, fears of such strikes existed since long. Despite various measures and action, the authorities have failed to stop dumping of garbage at the locality that is just about 1 km from the airport.
Along with birds, encroachments just next to the airport boundary wall too have raised concern. The issues were discussed at a meeting between Indian Air Force officials and Mohali deputy commissioner T P S Sidhu on Tuesday.
