Air connectivity gets a push

Vijayawada: The State government has offered Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to airline operators to encourage air connectivity and air passenger movement in the State. The TruJet has come forward to operate flights between Vijayawada and Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Tirupati, Vijayawada and Kadapa, according to Gannavaram Airport Director G. Madhusudhana Rao.

Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry Federation organised a meet with the airport director here on Tuesday.

On the occasion, Mr. Madhusudhan Rao said that TruJet would operate a flight to Hyderabad starting from April 5 every day at 9.25 p.m. The airlines would operate flights to Kadapa and Tiruapti thrice in a week, he said.

“The air connectivity among the cities in the State depends on passenger traffic. Conversely, the passenger traffic increases only if there were air connectivity. Initially, there may not be a full occupancy in the flights. To tide over these issues, and increase the air connectivity, the government offered the VGF,” the director explained.

Turbo Megha Airways Pvt Ltd is a scheduled regional carrier (South) and operates under the brand name Trujet. We have a fleet of two ATR-72 500 aircraft (72 seats) and are in the process to engage for more aircraft. It started operations on July 12, 2015.

The airport director also said the traffic and aircraft movement from Gannavaram airport has increased significantly compared to last year. The aircraft movement, which were 5,386 in 2014-15, rose to 7,596 in 2015-16. Likewise, a growth of 70 per cent in passenger movement was seen compared to last year as the passenger movement touched 3.96 lakh from 2.3 lakh in 2014-15, he said.
