The ramp leading to the international airport here may be demolished to make way for a new one soon. The Thiruvananthapuram airport authorities have sent a proposal for the new ramp, to connect the airport with the Kazhakoottam-Mukkola road, to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for final approval.
The decision to demolish the ramp, constructed by the state government, was taken last month based on a request by the NHAI. The highway authority had stated that the ramp would be a hurdle in widening the road to 45 metres. The airport initially opposed the move, but later agreed to consider the new proposal suggested by NHAI.
As per the suggestion, the existing ramp will be razed down and a new one will be constructed connecting it to the road. "The ramp will be demolished from the point where the airport collects user fee to the point where it joins the NH. Instead, the road will constructed such that it will directly enter the service road," an NHAI official said.
The National Highway Authority of India is expecting a reply from the airport to begin demolition of the existing ramp near Ananthapuri hospital.
