Stream restoration work at Aranmula to resume soon

Pathanamthitta: The natural stream restoration work at Aranmula Puncha which was stopped following a dispute over payment of royalty on the earth removed from the stream is to be resumed soon.

The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting convened by the District Collector here on Thursday. Leaders of the Aranmula People’s Action Council and Mount Zion Trust chairman Abraham Kalamannil attended the meeting.

According to the Collector, Mr. Kalamannil who has undertaken the stream restoration work has agreed to resume it next week so as to complete it by September.

The stream restoration began on June 29, 2015, following a High Court order in this regard.

A portion of the natural stream, Karimaramthodu, cutting across the Aranmula Puncha, was illegally converted by Mr. Kalamannil 11 years ago in the name of Aranmula airport project. The project promoted by a Chennai-based company too landed in trouble with the National Green Tribunal cancelling its environment clearance two years ago.
