Kozhikode: Officials of the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) seized 3.34 kg of gold valued at Rs 1.01 crore from a passenger who arrived at the Karipur airport on Sunday night.
DRI officials foiled the alleged smuggling attempt by Shabeer, 24, a native of Pilassery in Kunnamangalam in the district who arrived from Doha in Air India Express flight IX 374. DRI officials intercepted the passenger as part of a surprise check conducted at the airport.
On examining his checked-in baggage, six gold biscuits were found concealed inside an electric power tool. Three big gold biscuits weighing one kg each were found to be cut into half to make them fit inside the power tool. Three small gold biscuits were also found concealed in the power tool.
The Kawasaki impact wrench power spanner in which the gold was concealed was used in automobile workshops for tightening/ removing of nuts and bolts.
