Airport expansion encounters hurdles

Ahmedabad: The hyped expansion plan of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport is
encountering multiple hurdles. If it is expanded, the airport may end up displacing around 350 families living in the adjacent Kubernagar and Sardarnagar areas. Their rehabilitation is likely to result in significant expenditure. That concern has been revealed in a document comprising the minutes of a meeting involving the officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the state government.
The minutes, obtained through an RTI query, revealed that AAI officials, including its chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra, and SVPI director Manoj Gangal explained the land requirements to extend the existing parallel taxi track to meet the future growth of air traffic, in line with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)
regulations. The proposal relating to land requirements was placed in a meeting, held on February 23, before state government officials including chief secretary J N Singh and the Ahmedabad collector at the time, Avantika Singh. 11/07/18 Ashish Chauhan/Times of India
