Air India in the way of taxiway straightening

Chennai: Air India has come in the way of Airports Authority of India’s ongoing straightening of a taxiway to remove a bottleneck and build parking bays for cargo planes at Chennai airport.
The AAI wants to demolish a hangar and a building used by the airline to make space for parking stands for cargo planes after the taxiway before the old airport is straightened. But the airline, using a cargo hangar and building to handle its cargo consignments, has been delaying vacating of the facility though AAI had been asking it to move into the integrated cargo complex nearby.
Officials from AAI headquarters in Delhi held a meeting with Air India officials in Chennai on Monday in which the airline agreed in principle to move out but no deadline has been fixed. The parking stands for planes are needed because the taxiway is being straightened by taking up the existing cargo stands and the old airport building. A senior AAI official said a deadline for vacating the premises might be taken in Delhi after the inputs from today’s meeting were conveyed to the headquarters.
