Airport comes under fire over fire safety

Mohali: A day after finding glaring shortcomings in the fire safety system at the Chandigarh international airport in Mohali, the local Municipal Corporation on Tuesday refused to renew the fire safety certificate of the airport building.

Confirming the development, Mohali MC Joint Commissioner Kanu Thind, who found serious lapses in the fire safety system during her inspection on Monday, said the airport was given a provisional no-objection certificate in this regard. The date of the certificate had expired after which the airport authorities applied for its renewal.
“We refused to renew the certificate on Tuesday and asked the airport authorities to remove all shortcomings first,” said Thind.
The Joint Commissioner said an explanation had been sought from the Mohali chief fire officer in this regard. “I have sought an explanation from the chief fire officer after finding glaring shortcomings in the fire safety system at the airport. I don’t know why and how these shortcomings were not noticed by our officer there during his inspection before issuing an NOC in this regard,” said Kanu Thind.
