Consultant for airport tunnel to be picked

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will soon appoint a consultant to do a technical feasibility study before beginning the construction of a tunnel at the Chennai airport.

This tunnel will link the new integrated terminal, which is under construction, and a satellite terminal that will be constructed soon in the apron area.
The additional terminal will be used to handle passenger traffic. The satellite terminal will be located between the main and secondary runways. They will also be helpful in the AAI making use of remote bays for parking aircraft. A passenger can finish the check-in procedures in the newly integrated terminal and can board the aircraft at the satellite terminal.

Similarly, this terminal will have a few conveyor belts for baggage collection. Officials of the AAI said, the consultant will take nine months to complete the study and during this time, the agency will examine the site, carry out geo-technical investigation, possible environmental impact and prepare a detailed project report.
The tunnels will be about 1.5 km to 2 km long and located 10.5 feet below the ground.
