Mohali: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recovered 2.98 kg of gold, estimated to be worth Rs 94 lakh, that was being smuggled in by a resident of Amritsar at the Chandigarh international airport here today.
The passenger, Malkeet Singh, arrived from Dubai on an IndiGo flight that landed here in the morning. He was proceeding through the green channel without making any declaration before customs officials when he was intercepted by DRI officials on a tip-off. It was a joint operation with the Mohali police.
According to sources, the passenger was carrying 15 large door latches. While the body of the latches was made of conventional metal, the inner sliders were made of gold. The latches were kept in his checked-in luggage.
