Airport bus service to resume next month

Pune: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) on Friday retracted from its earlier stand on terminating the bus service to the Pune airport and said the service will continue after a one-month halt for induction of e-buses.
“It is a fact that the service to and from the airport has not been profitable for reasons unknown. However, we are interested in running the service and upgrade it. The service on the route will be halted for a month in June and resumed after replacing the traditional air-conditioned buses with e-buses, which are expected to arrive within a month,” PMPML’s joint managing director Ajay Charthankar said.

In a TOI report on Wednesday, experts and transport activists had slammed the PMPML for its decision to shut down the service, citing examples of other cities like Bengaluru where the local transport authorities were successfully running buses to the airport.
“We need to find out the reason why the service is not popular. When it was started, many passengers had shown interest. With the coming of more e-buses, we will increase at least one more route to/from the airport. Though things are yet to be finalized, we will start another route from a place in Pimpri Chinchwad to and from the airport apart from Hinjewadi (Phase-3),” Charthankar said.
