IndiGo to suspend flights to Chennai, Ahmd; bizmen fret

Hubballi: People of Hubballi and other parts of North Karnataka region were elated when the Hubballi airport was chosen for the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (Udan) regional connectivity scheme. Thanks to the scheme, many could travel at an affordable cost.
However, in a surprise development, IndiGo airlines has decided to stop its service to Ahmedabad and Chennai from August 1.
Vinay Javali, hon-secretary, Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hubballi, told TOI, “Hubballi has been growing rapidly on all fronts, mainly textiles, machinery components, food processing, electronics and electrical goods and other business after air services commenced from the city. Flights to various destinations including Chennai and Ahmedabad by IndiGo had given us hope that the economy of the city will grow at a fast pace.”
“About 60% of the businessmen from the city travel to Ahmedabad for business as well as to meet their relatives in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Many travel to Chennai for visa, medical treatment and to go to South East countries. If the service is stopped, it will inconvenience many,” he added.
