Mumbai Airport cargo complex under scanner after rise in coronavirus cases

The cargo complex at the Mumbai International Airport has come under the scanner of the municipal body after three people were detected with novel coronavirus infection.

“As per the standard protocol, the [Assistant Drug Controller] office area should be considered as a containment area. However, as the office comes under essential services, which include supply of essential medicines, it cannot be sealed or made non-functional as per the request of Assistant Drug Controller,” read the report by the municipal health official.

The report also expressed concern over the office of the ADC having no separate entrance and exits and common toilet. The report noted that proper care needs to be taken so that there is no community spread.

“Social distancing is to be maintained, regular check-up and screening of workers through medical personnel from airport authority, frequent sanitisation, care for workers above 55 years of age, quarantine of high-risk contacts and import and export related work/permission to be online only,” the report added.

India Today TV first reported on May 8 how the Watchdog Foundation, an NGO based out of Mumbai, had written a letter to the Chief Minister alleging that Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) was flouting norms for controlling the spread of the virus.

The NGO had also pointed out how cases in the cargo complex were rising.

The Assistant Drug Controller has now allowed for online submission of ADC clearance doing away with the process of physical presence.

“The ADC will release the NOC online without physical presence,” read a mail.

In addition, the Commissioner of Customs has said report submitted by the Assistant Drug Controller is being studied. “It is requested to ascertain the situation as to how such cases of Covid-19 are likely to effect the functioning and operations at air cargo complex,” read the letter by Customs Commissioner.

As per the municipal body report, there have been three positive cases reported from the ADC office. According to customs department, the count of Covid-19 cases on May 11 was four.

Speaking to India Today TV, activist Godfrey Pimenta said corrective measures were taken only now after the commissioner himself saw the seriousness of the situation.
