Travel between India and Europe has become significantly easier after Germany and France removed airport transit visa requirements for Indian passport holders, a move expected to strengthen tourism, business travel and airline connectivity. Germany abolished the Airport Transit Visa (ATV) requirement for Indians travelling to third countries via German airports from June 3, while France implemented a similar exemption for passengers transiting through French airports from April 10. The changes allow Indian travellers to make airside connections without obtaining a separate transit visa, provided they remain within the international transit zone.
The Lufthansa Group welcomed Germany's decision, saying it would simplify travel and reinforce the country's position as a key gateway between India, Europe and the rest of the world. "India is the Lufthansa Group's largest intercontinental market in the Asia-Pacific region," the airline group said, adding that visa-free transit would improve connectivity and passenger convenience. Lufthansa expects the policy change to support growth in traffic from India, one of its most important long-haul markets.
France's decision is part of a broader effort to enhance mobility between the two countries and comes alongside initiatives to expand the acceptance of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in France. Indian travellers heading to destinations in North America, Latin America and Europe are expected to benefit from smoother connections through major hubs such as Paris Charles de Gaulle. Together, the German and French measures mark a significant easing of travel procedures for Indian passengers and reflect strengthening people-to-people and economic ties between India and Europe.
