India's efforts to decarbonise its aviation sector received a significant boost with the launch of the Green Hydrogen Certification Portal, a digital platform designed to ensure transparency, traceability and regulatory compliance in the production of green hydrogen. Launched by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, the portal forms part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and is expected to play a crucial role in certifying hydrogen and hydrogen-derived fuels used by hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation, refining and fertiliser production. The certification system is intended to assure both domestic and international markets that India's green hydrogen meets stringent sustainability standards.
The aviation sector is emerging as one of the key beneficiaries of India's green hydrogen strategy. The government is preparing to increase the use of green hydrogen and its derivatives, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and synthetic e-fuels, as airlines worldwide face mounting pressure to reduce carbon emissions. The move is also aimed at helping Indian exports comply with the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which will impose carbon-related costs on products entering Europe. Industry experts believe certified green hydrogen could eventually become a critical feedstock for producing low-carbon aviation fuels, helping Indian carriers and airports meet future environmental requirements while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
While commercial hydrogen-powered aircraft remain several years away, India is laying the groundwork for a broader hydrogen ecosystem through certification, infrastructure development and investment incentives. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the government targets annual production of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 and is supporting projects across mobility, ports and industrial sectors. For aviation, the certification portal represents an important first step toward establishing a trusted supply chain for future hydrogen-based and synthetic aviation fuels, positioning India to participate in the global transition toward cleaner air transport.
