Sudden rain accompanied by strong winds disrupted flight operations at Chennai International Airport on Thursday, forcing the diversion of two incoming flights and causing delays to several arrivals and departures. Airport officials said adverse weather conditions over the city affected aircraft movements during the evening, prompting air traffic controllers to implement safety measures until conditions improved.
According to reports, a Chennai-bound flight was diverted to Tirupati while another was rerouted to Tiruchirappalli after pilots were unable to land safely due to gusty winds and unstable weather conditions over the airport. Several other domestic and international services experienced delays as aircraft were required to hold or adjust their schedules until the weather cleared. Airport authorities said operations gradually returned to normal after the intensity of the winds and rain subsided.
The disruption came as parts of Chennai and neighbouring districts witnessed sudden showers and squally winds linked to changing weather conditions across Tamil Nadu. Weather officials have forecast continued rainfall in several parts of the state over the next few days, raising the possibility of further disruptions to air travel and other transport services. Airlines advised passengers to check their flight status before proceeding to the airport.
