Air India’s tryst with flight delay continues with passengers stranded in Kochi

Kochi:  Air India cancelled its Delhi-bound flight late on Saturday citing technical snag, leaving about 90 passengers stranded in Kochi for nearly 24 hours. Air India flight AI834 was scheduled to leave Kochi at 11pm on Saturday. But passengers were told at 10pm that the flight was cancelled due to technical issues, said Shiyas Sayed, a passenger.

provided us with accommodation, and assured us they will arrange an alternative flight on Sunday. In the afternoon, the airline staff asked us to report at the airport at 3:30 pm. They told us that another flight has been arranged and it will depart at 6pm. However, that flight too was delayed citing the same technical issue. Finally, they told us that it will depart at 9pm,” said Shiyas.

“There are students among us who have exams in the coming days and office-goers who need to rejoin on Monday,” he said. The Air India spokesperson did not respond to calls. Confirming the incident, Kochi airport spokesman P S Jayan said a few passengers who had to travel urgently were accommodated in other flights on Saturday itself.  “The rest were given accommodation with all expenses paid and an alternative flight carrying the stranded passengers departed at 9pm on Sunday,” he said.

25 crore units produced, CIAL now second largest power producer in Kerala

Kochi: The Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) -- which runs the world’s first fully solar- powered airport -- has crossed another milestone in its green energy initiative. It has achieved a cumulative production volume of 25 crore units of power, offsetting 1.6 lakh metric tonnes of carbon emission, the airport authorities said. CIAL launched its solar initiative in 2013 with a 100kWp (kilowatt peak) pilot plant on the Kochi airport premises.

Later, the solar capacity was expanded to help the airport attain its pioneering status by 2015 with an installed capacity of 13.1MWp (megawatt peak). “CIAL’s development policy encompasses total sustainability management (TSM). We are trying to explore every possible way to address climate change. CIAL achieved power neutrality in 2015 and has now become a power surplus organisation, feeding approximately four crore units of excess power annually to the state grid.

And with the help of the government, we are sure that we can venture into more such projects soon,” said CIAL managing director S Suhas. Supplemented by its 4.5MW hydroelectric power project at Arippara, CIAL is now the second largest power producer in Kerala after KSEB.

To date, CIAL has generated more than 25 crore units of green power from various solar PV installations at the airport. It now has a total installed solar capacity of 50MWp. The 12MWp solar plant at Payyannur, inaugurated in March 2022, has generated approximately one crore units of green power so far. The Arippara hydroelectric project, has generated approximately 75 lakh units to date.

Bengaluru: Vaccine challenge for business team flying to Germany

Bengaluru: A six-member business delegation flying from the Kempegowda International Airport to Frankfurt on an Emirates flight on Saturday had a harrowing time as the airline staff did not allow them to board the flight, saying passengers who have received Covaxin and Covishield vaccines are not allowed into Germany as per a new circular received by them. After nearly a three-hour tussle, involving arguments and help from their agent, they were finally allowed to board the flight (EK 565) at 9.15 am.

Software engineer Yogesh Dhariyal, who was part of the group, told TNIE that the problem arose because the Bengaluru staff of Emirates misinterpreted an official communication issued to them. “They got a mail stating that Simopharm is not allowed and somehow the Bengaluru airport team misinterpreted the whole mail. Those vaccinated with Covishield have been allowed inside airports since last year and public from other countries vaccinated with Covaxin are allowed from June 1,” he said.

The group was heading to Germany on a month-long business trip. “It was frustrating. We reached the airport around 6.25 am and our flight was at 10.35 am to Frankfurt via Dubai. We have valid business visas with two or three doses of vaccines and negative RTPCR certificates too. The supervisor of Emirates in Bengaluru refused to accept them and told us to go back. We fought a lot and called our agent in Bengaluru. He called the Emirates Regional Sales Manager and explained to him that we had adhered to all the guidelines. After a triple check, they allowed us. We have reached Germany now. There were no issues at all at the immigration centre here,” Dhariyal said.

Another flyer Ashish Sharma, not part of the group, tweeted at 7.22 am, “I am standing in check-in counter of Emirates to board a flight to Germany but suddenly we are not allowed to board flight with reason that Covishield and Covaxin is not allowed in Germany. Please confirm this.”

When the Emirates Support Team was contacted, the response read, “Passengers who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with vaccines approved by the Paul Ehrlich Institute (or equivalents of those vaccines used in non-EU countries) can enter Germany from non-EU  countries.” After furnishing a link on approved vaccines, the message added, “You can also check with the local authorities for more information.” There was no specific response to the issue spoken about.

Smoke from burning waste near Coimbatore airport a threat to flight safety

The dumping and burning of garbage on a landfill at Chinniyampalayam off Avinashi Road has caused concern among residents as well as the Coimbatore International Airport. Residents in the area complain that noxious smoke of burnt plastic and other waste materials is posing a risk to their health. They say that garbage is burnt day and night.
The smoke and the dumping of waste is also a threat to aircraft as the dumping site is situated exactly on the landing/take off path of the runway, hardly three km away from the threshold. The waste attracts large birds, including kites which can be a threat to aircraft.
“The burning is happening most of the days, especially at night with the knowledge of the panchayat officials,” alleged a woman who resides near the dumping site. Another resident alleged that the garbage was being burnt as the dumping site was inadequate for the waste being generated in the panchayat. “Venkitapuram residents are suffering from the smoke most,” he said.

Devaraj, president of Chinniyampalayam panchayat, claimed that it was not the panchayat workers who burn the waste. “People who collect trash from the landfill burns it for purposes such as removing insulation of copper wires. We have arranged pipelines to extinguish fire,” he claimed. Meanwhile, he admitted that the local body did not have a proper dumping site to manage waste and the existing dumping site on the side of Avinashi Road, near a waterbody, became a landfill as people dumped waste there over the years.

“It is a very small panchayat with no other place to dump waste. The panchayat administration is also very much worried about how the garbage could be handled and processed,” he said and added that the Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials had already discussed the issue with the panchayat. Sources with the Airfield Environment Management Committee (AEMC) said that the dangers of dumping waste and burning them was discussed at its meetings and officials of the AAI from Coimbatore airport had visited the place in the past. Coimbatore District Collector had instructed officials of the departments concerned to address the issue, they said. When asked about the issue, Coimbatore airport director S. Senthil Valavan said that dumping of waste and burning was discussed at the last meeting of AEMC. Collector G.S. Sameeran said that necessary action would be taken on the matter.

Airport’s new terminal likely to be ready in August

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India is likely to take two more months to open Chennai airport’s new integrated terminal. As the work is yet to be completed, a part of the new terminal will be opened only by August, the officials said.

AAI officials had said that the multilevel car parking and a part of the new terminal will be ready by June. While the former is likely to be operational in July, the terminal is likely to be ready only in August.

Roofing is nearing completion and the interior work is in progress. “While pandemic caused the major delay, the ripple-effect of it resulted in delays in arrival of many components like elevator and escalators from some countries. We are constantly pushing the contractor and reviewing the work to have it completed. We should be able to open it in August,” said an official. But sources said it might be tough to have it operational in August too and may take even longer than that.

Since the new integrated terminal has been planned to be opened in two phases, the delay will be setback for completing the Phase II project as a whole. The project carried out at a cost of ₹2,500 crore began four years ago to build a new terminal over an area of 1,97,000 square metre.

The ongoing work has caused a lot of inconvenience to passengers, with dust, noise and difficulty switching between the present domestic and international terminals. At many locations, it is difficult for senior citizens to walk in the service road.

India Counters China By Levelling Up Infra Game In Nepal With 40 Airport Projects: Sources

Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit, Republic learnt of India upping its infra game in Nepal on Saturday. Sources say that India is going to facilitate infrastructure boost in as many as 40 airports across Nepal.

There are a total of 48 airports in Nepal, of which major airports like Tribhuvan International Airport, and Pokhra Airport, will be excluded from India's restructuring plan, sources said.

India's attempt will be a major counter to China, which has been investing a great deal in Nepal. On May 16, a $76 million airport project in Bhairahawa, the closest city to Lumbini, was inaugurated by Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. The airport is funded by the Asian Development Bank and OPEC Fund for International Development but built by China's Northwest Civil Aviation Airport Construction Group, and is intended to capitalise on Buddhist tourism.

It was on the same day that PM Modi landed in Nepal to meet his Nepali counterpart, but he avoided using the airport built by China. The Indian Prime Minister travelled to Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, and from there, took a helicopter to the Buddha's birthplace, Lumbini, completely bypassing the new facility, which is the second international airport after Kathmandu that was full to capacity. It has a capacity of two million passengers a year and is expected to ease travel for pilgrims to one of the holiest sites in Buddhism.

It is pertinent to mention here that China overtook India as the biggest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) source for Nepal in 2014. Since then, China has been pumping in a huge amount of financial resources into Nepal, helping the landlocked country in setting up new airports, and railway stations, and laying new roads including connecting it to Chinese cities for transportation of petroleum and other essential products, ostensibly to help Kathmandu cut dependence on New Delhi.

Assam cleared tea estate for ‘imaginary’ airport

The Assam government had used a fleet of bulldozers and excavators to clear swathes of a tea estate for an “imaginary” airport, information provided by the Civil Aviation Ministry has revealed.

In a May 31 reply to an application under the Right to Information Act, the Ministry said it had not received any proposal for the construction of a greenfield airport at the Doloo Tea Estate near Silchar in southern Assam’s Cachar district.

By then, the authorities had uprooted some 30 lakh tea bushes for a civilian airport in order not to depend on the existing Kumbhirgram airport under operational control of the Indian Air Force.

Amit Kumar Jha, the Ministry’s Chief Public Information Officer said the government had formulated a Greenfield Airports Policy in 2008 that provides guidelines, procedure and conditions for the establishment of new greenfield airports in the country.

“As per policy, an airport developer, including the State government, willing to establish an airport is required to send a proposal to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in the prescribed format for a two-stage process, i.e., site clearance followed by in principle approval,” Mr. Jha said in his reply to the RTI query.

He also said the Ministry approved the setting up of 21 greenfield airports across India but did not receive any proposal for one near Silchar.

The Assam Cabinet had on May 29 decided that 1,263 families of tea workers at the Doloo Tea Estate would be provided with ₹1 lakh each “as a goodwill gesture for their cooperation in the development of the greenfield airport at Silchar”.

This has ticked off the tea plantation workers, considered a vote bank that the BJP weaned away from Congress. The Doloo Tea Estate Save Coordination Committee called for a protest rally on June 15 against the “conspiracy to affect the livelihood of hundreds of tea garden workers”.

M’luru-Delhi flight resumes on July 1

Mangaluru: After a long wait, the coastal city will again directly get connected to Delhi by air, starting July 1. This was proposed in the summer schedule.

IndiGo airlines will start the service, with four non-stop flights per week, on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The two hour 35 minutes, non-stop flight, will depart from Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) at 10.45am, and the flight from Delhi to Mangaluru departs at 7.40am. Meanwhile, the recently introduced, four times a week, Delhi-Pune-Mangaluru flight, will continue its service.

According to aviation industry sources, the direct flight to the capital was proposed in the summer schedule, and is being made operational starting July 1. It is a re-introduction of the direct daily flight that operated prior to the pandemic, and the only difference is that now it is four times a week. Aviation enthusiast Anvesh Bhat, commenting on the re-introduction of the service, tweeted from the handle @BhatAnvesh, “Yes, its happening finally!!! Will surely be a successful flight. Timings are quite good too.”

Another aviation geek, with the handle Travelgeek @geek_ixe, commented that it was a route that was in demand from students as well as businessmen. Currently one has to spend more than five hours to reach Delhi, via connecting flights from different airports in the country.

Earlier, the airline that operated flights to Delhi, stopped its service, citing poor passenger load. However, the passengers who travelled in Delhi-Mangaluru flights, had complained that the flight operated late at night. It was not feasible due to safety reasons and convenience, the passengers said. “The current timings are convenient to travel,” commented a traveller.

COVID-19: HC calls for strict action against air passengers violating masking, hygiene norms

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday called for strict action against those found violating masking and hand hygiene norms at airports and in aircraft, observing that the COVID-19 pandemic has not abated and keeps springing up its ugly head.

The high court said all such persons, who are found to be violating these norms, should be booked and fined and they should be placed on the no-fly list and added that it is essential to introduce sufficient deterrence to enforce compliance of norms.

It said it is noticed that very often the norms are not implemented on the ground with the seriousness with which they are framed and therefore, it is essential for the authorities, including Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to ensure that the implementation on the ground is effected properly.

“For this purpose, we are of the view that the DGCA should give separate binding directions to all airlines to authorise the staff at airports and in aircraft, including air hostesses, captains, pilots and others to take strict action against passengers and others who violate the masking and hand hygiene norms,” a bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Sachin Datta said.

The court noted the submission of DGCA’s advocate Anjana Gosain, who herself is inflicted with COVID-19 and appeared through video conferencing, that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued another an order on May 10, calling for strict enforcement of COVID-19 protocol.

She said the authorities are seriously implementing norms regarding masking at airports and in aircraft by all concerned.

“The issuance of said order, in our view, is the right step since the pandemic has not abated and keeps springing up its ugly head,” the bench said, adding that guidelines are always in place and it is the practical compliance which becomes a problem and “we falter”.

It said let necessary steps be taken and further action taken report be placed before the court and listed the matter for further hearing on July 18.

The court’s order came in a PIL, registered on the experience of a sitting judge of the high court while travelling by a domestic flight during the pandemic.

Justice C Hari Shankar had on March 8, 2021, taken suo motu cognisance of the situation after witnessing passengers not wearing masks properly during transportation from airport to the flight and their stubborn reluctance to wear mask properly.

The court, which had issued various guidelines to the DGCA and airlines for immediate compliance, had said it was constrained to pass the order because of an alarming situation which was witnessed by the judge himself during an Air India flight from Kolkata to New Delhi on March 5, 2021.

During the hearing, the court observed that people may not wear N-95 masks in flights but they must at least wear a surgical mask as the idea is to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

Doctors also wear surgical mask the whole day, the bench said, adding that only at the time of meals the passengers can take off the mask and the moment they finish their meals, they have to wear it again.

After 2 yrs’ gap, Qatar Airways flight to take off from city today

Nagpur: Yet another international airline is resuming its services from the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport here. From Thursday, Qatar Airways will be restarting its flights on Doha-Nagpur-Doha sector after keeping the operations closed for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Earlier, Air-Arabia restarted its flight on the Sharjah-Nagpur sector a few months ago.

“It is big news for the Nagpur airport. After the success of Air-Arabia on Sharjah-Nagpur sector, we kept working hard for the new foreign airlines and now Qatar Airways have confirmed that from June 2, it will start its regular services to Doha. Huge thumbs up for Nagpur. Hard work pays,” tweeted Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) Limited managing director Deepak Kapoor on Wednesday.

Though Kapoor didn’t pick up repeated calls from TOI, officials from the airport said that the Qatar Airways flight would depart from here on four days a week. “It would be operating Airbus A-320 having capacity to fly 144 passengers. It would also be offering business class travel. Passengers, particularly those touring western countries, would be immensely benefited as the flight would connect over 150 destinations from Doha’s Hamid International Airport,” the officials said and added that Air Arabia operated a 180-seater flight having all economy seats.

Qatar Airways, one of the world’s leading airlines, started its services from the city in January 2008 but closed it in May 2009 due to poor response. It resumed services in December 2015 and received good response. The operations were shut in 2020 after the pandemic hit the world. It also closed its office in the city in February last year and reduced the staff, as per the airport officials.

Rahul Gandhi claims on exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, Srinagar Airport ‘dismisses' tweet as rumour

The Srinagar Airport authorities have denied that Kashmiri Pandits have departed the Valley, as claimed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The administration issued a statement after Rahul Gandhi indicated in a tweet that many innocent people are being killed in Jammu and Kashmir and that a new migration of Kashmiri Pandits has begun in the Valley. The airport administration also requested that such rumours not be spread. "We strongly rebut this sensational rumour-mongering. We handle between 16 thousand to 18 thousand passengers every day. Today also the number of passengers is average. There is no heavy rush of the minority community, as rumoured by this tweet. Please do not spread rumours like this," Srinagar Airport said in a tweet.

The Congress leader also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate steps to restore peace in the union territory. Further attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress MP said those who should be protecting the Kashmiri Pandits are busy promoting a film.

"Bank managers, teachers and many innocent people are getting killed every day; Kashmiri Pandits are fleeing. Those who have to protect them have no time to promote the film. BJP has only made Kashmir its ladder of power. Take immediate steps to restore peace in Kashmir, Prime Minister," he said in a tweet. Meanwhile, BJP leader Kavindra Gupta said that the government and security forces have worked in the past and will continue to do so, and these people will not survive.

He also assured me that the situation will come under control soon."For the last two years, the security forces and the government have made efforts to maintain peace in Kashmir. For the condition which has been created for a few days, the administration has made a new way for the security. Yesterday the administration also said that all the people should be taken to a safe place," said Gupta.

Attacking the previous governments in the Valley, the BJP leader said, "The governments of those who have been running for 70 years, whether it was Rahul Gandhi`s Congress or the PDP government around it, this is started during that period. These are the people who support Pakistan; today, they remembered all of these things; these are the people who question the security forces and the surgical strikes and don`t take them seriously."He said that after the incidents of killing, it is obvious that there is a palace of fear, and the Home Minister Amit Shah has said that a major operation is needed.

Another BJP leader, Ravinder Raina, said that terrorism has flourished in Kashmiri because of the wrong policies of Rahul Gandhi`s Congress.

It is the Congress party which has contributed to terrorism in the Vallery. Rahul Gandhi and his party have sympathies with terrorists, who have killed lakhs of Kashmiris. Mani Shankar Aiyar, Digvijaya Singh, and Shashi Tharoor have glorified Pakistan and the terrorists of Pakistan, May I ask whose leaders are they?"He further said that the whole world knows that the sympathies of the Congress party have been with the forces supporting the separatists and Pakistan.

Devas shareholders seize $25m more in AAI, Air India’s Canadian assets

Devas shareholders have seized an additional $25 million in assets based in Canada from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) as well as Air India. In total, Devas shareholders have seized a total of $55 million so far.

This comes after the Canadian courts granted the Indian government partial leniency in January. The court noted that Devas shareholders can only seize 50 per cent of Air India assets held by IATA, and had quashed the order permitting seizure of funds belonging to AAI. This came after AAI had challenged the December order passed by a court in the case related to Devas Multimedia.

The court had granted Devas shareholders the right to seize assets belonging to the AAI in Montreal to enforce a $111-million award given by United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.

However, according to the information shared with BusinessLine, the $55 million under seizure order is the result of enforcement proceedings undertaken in Canada targeting monies flowing through IATAI from AAI and Air India. This includes the normal and orderly collection of overflight fees, landing fees and ticketing fees.

Now, an additional $25 million have been seized, over the $30 million already seized as of December 31, 2021.

Lead counsel for Devas Shareholders, Matthew D McGill, partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, said, “The announcement of $55 million under seizure by Devas shareholders is a confirmation of what we have said from the beginning. Devas will be relentless in its efforts to enforce our lawful international arbitral awards in courts around the world.”

The $111-million award has been confirmed and enforced in many jurisdictions internationally, besides Canada. In January, a Paris court allowed Devas shareholders to seize an apartment that houses the Indian Deputy Chief of Mission, valued at €3.8 million, as part of enforcing the $111-million award.

New Vellore airport grounded as acquisition of 10-acre land hits roadblock

Vellore: While 80 per cent of work for the new airport at Abdullapuram along the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway is complete, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) still needs 10.72 acres of private land for the project.

An AAI official on Wednesday told The New Indian Express, "We have made a request to the district administration to acquire that land, which is mandatory for getting license to fly." The land is required at the end of the runway to prevent overshoot and/or undershoot of aircraft, which affects safety of passengers, the official added.

According to the official, only the acquisition process is pending and infrastructure work such as the runway, taxiway, apron facility, and Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower has been completed. Once the acquisition is successful, the project is expected to be finished seven months from now, the official said.

Collector P Kumaravel Pandian, who inspected the airport on Wednesday, told reporters, "As per the AAI's request, we are going to recommend the acquisition of the 10.72 acres at a meeting convened by the Secretary of the Industries Department on June 6." And, he stated, alternative land will be provided to the owners of the 10.72 acres soon.

Apart from this tract of land, the district administration had already acquired 97 acres for the airport. "We directed the AAI to construct a compound wall around the entire stretch of land acquired for the facility," the Collector said.

A graveyard inside the facility was removed and an alternative area was allotted outside the facility, for which roads were now being laid, Pandian added.
