AAI working on India's first facial recognition-based passenger boarding system: Government

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) was working on the country's first facial recognition technology-based biometric boarding system for passengers at Varanasi, Pune, Kolkata and Vijayawada airports, Minister of State for Civil Aviation V K Singh said on Thursday. "This biometric boarding system is part of the first phase of Digi Yatra scheme's implementation," he said in a written response to a question in Lok Sabha.

The Digi Yatra initiative seeks to promote paperless and hassle-free air travel. It is a biometrics-based digital processing system for passenger entry and related requirements at the airport, according to the government.

The AAI has engaged NEC Corporation Private Limited to implement this technology, the first of its kind in the country, at the four airports, the minister said, adding the vendor was selected through an open tender process.

The proposed Digi Yatra central eco-system has been planned to go live in March 2022, he mentioned.

Digi Yatra will be scaled up in a phased manner for adoption across various airports of the country, he said.

Pune airport’s runway to remain closed between 9 am to 11:30 am

Pune: The Pune airport from Wednesday will be 24 hour operational with a total of 100 flight movements between 8am until midnight, Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke said.

Apart from this, the airport will remain closed for civil flight operations between 9am to 11:30am from Sunday to Friday on account of practice sessions of IAF jets and between 11am to 5pm on Saturdays for runway maintenance. Earlier, the runway was reserved for the sortee sessions of the IAF jets between 6:30am until 8am.

“The schedule is still being finalised but until 12 midnight there will be around 50 departures and 50 arrivals. The rest of the schedule will be finalised by late evening hours. The IAF has told us that they will use the runway for their operations between 9am to 11:30am on weekdays and on Sunday. During this time, no civil flights will be operational,” the director said.

The new IAF timings will be tough for many business flyers who prefer early morning hours. “Yes It will be a problem but one has to manage now. With night and red eye flights starting, frequent business flyers like us will have to take those flights a day in advance,” a frequent flyer told TOI.

The many fortunes riding on Noida's Jewar airport

New Delhi: The fortunes of a Swiss airport town bordering Germany are connected with Noida. While Jewar has been under discussion for years, the Uttar Pradesh government might now be more than ready to expedite the Noida airport project, especially with state elections round the corner. But the Zurich Airport authority seems to be in a greater hurry than the Yogi government to get Noida airport up and running.

Interesting, isn’t it? We’ll delve into that. But first, let’s look into the details of the upcoming airport.

The greenfield airport, spread over 1,334 hectares, is being developed as a public-private partnership between the Uttar Pradesh government and Zurich Airport, which outbid Adani Enterprises and the GMR group to win the project.

Zurich Airport is investing Rs 5,700 crore for phase-1 and has tied up Rs 3,725 crore in debt from the State Bank of India. The airport's phase-1 will cost Rs 8,916 crore. The Uttar Pradesh government is spending Rs 4,326 crore on land acquisition, rehabilitation and settlement.

The airport will have two terminal complexes. In the first phase, it is expected to handle 12 million passengers annually through Terminal 1. In the second phase, Terminal 1 will generate an additional capacity of 18 million passengers. By 2050, the airport will handle 70 million passengers annually, with Terminal 1 handling 30 million passengers and Terminal 2 seeing 40 million passengers.

But with Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport not having reached saturation in capacity, will the Jewar airport be able to generate adequate passenger demand?

Christoph Schnellmann of Zurich Airport, who is CEO of Delhi Noida International Airport, believes so. In an interview with Business Standard, Schnellmann said passenger traffic will triple in the next 40 years.

It is expected to have two runways in the first phase. By the end of all six phases of construction, the Jewar airport will have six runways.

Until now, Delhi’s IGI Airport is India’s busiest, with three terminals seeing passenger traffic of 67.3 million in FY20, before the pandemic sent the aviation industry into a tizzy.

Two flights diverted, 15 delayed due to dense fog

Patna: A sudden drop in the visibility owing to dense fog in the city on Sunday morning forced two airlines to divert their two Patna-bound flights to Ranchi and Kolkata. Fifteen flights, on the other hand, were delayed due to bad weather till 8pm. The flight operation at Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport resumed after 9am when the required visibility of 1,000m was achieved.

Go First’s Delhi-Patna-Delhi flight (G8-165/168) landed at Patna airport at 9.10am instead of its scheduled arrival time of 7.15am. The flight was diverted to Ranchi. Another flight from Delhi (6E-2022) of IndiGo was diverted to Kolkata and landed at Patna airport at 12.30pm. The flight got delayed for more than four hours.

An IndiGo executive at Patna airport said the flight landed at Kolkata airport at 7.55am. “Even the manual runway visual range (RVR) was less than required visibility of 800 at Patna airport. Most incoming and outgoing flights of different airlines operated with delays,” he added.

Passengers fall prey to ‘hunter’ cabbies at Hyderabad airport

With unauthorised cab drivers nudging out the app-based cabbies, the passengers arriving at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) are going through a harrowing experience. As soon as travellers arrive, the unauthorised cabbies, just like the autowallahs at railway stations, crowd around them. As no app-based cab drivers are available, the passengers ride home grudgingly in the unauthorised cabs.

The app-based cab drivers are reluctant to go to the airport as they cannot compete with the unauthorised colleagues and have to return without customers for nearly 20 to 25 km, which they cannot afford.

For the past year, there have been complaints galore over the non-availability of app-based drivers as unauthorised cabbies, who are referred to as ‘hunters’, persuade and hijack the passengers. With a lack of assistance on landing and non-functional booking kiosks, the passengers are forced to give in to these ‘hunters’.

The practice has gone out of control in recent months and authorities remain helpless. Most of the domestic travellers have started taking their own vehicles to the airport if they have a couple of days of work in some other city.

“I stopped booking cabs as they are cancelling at the 11th hour, impacting all my plans. Back in February, I complained to authorities but of no avail,” said Vinod Kanumala, chief functionary of the Indian Federation of Road Safety.

Following Vinod’s tweets, RGIA police then tweeted: “We are booking cases against them. For the safety of passengers, we are running the help desk and also a women’s help desk at the airport. We are also arranging regular pickets and patrolling duties. Even now if any such incident comes to our notice, we take immediate and necessary action.”

Like Vinod, many other passengers stopped booking cabs and are now taking their own vehicles to the airport. Some are urging the RGIA authorities to resolve the issue, while others want the TSRTC to run more services between the airport and major areas of Hyderabad city.

However, as per the cabbies, app-based cab drivers were avoiding going towards the airport, fearing 20-25 km of dry run. Even if they wait in queue for five to six hours, these “hunters” snatch away their business.

Woman, mom fly to Delhi, bag with coconuts retained at KIA

Bengaluru: Unaware that dry coconuts are prohibited onboard aircraft as they pose a fire threat, a young woman and her mother had a shock when they landed in Delhi and realised their suitcase with six coconuts was retained in Bengaluru.

The two are now on a quest to find the suitcase, which also contains clothes for a wedding they are scheduled to attend. The coconuts were to be part of a belated Bhai Dooj celebration in Uttarakhand.

Education content developer and Kodihalli resident Astha Chaudhary and her mother booked an Air India flight, AI 804, from Bengaluru to Delhi on Saturday as they were headed to their relative’s wedding in Kashipur, Uttarakhand.

“We checked in two suitcases at Kempegowda International Airport around 5am and took off in the 6.10am flight. We landed in Delhi by 9am. I was shocked to realise that one of our checked-in suitcases hadn’t reached our destination. I enquired with Air India ground staff at Delhi airport, who checked with their Bengaluru counterparts and informed us that the bag was retained in Bengaluru as there were dry coconuts inside,” Astha said.

She said Air India staff asked her to wait at the airport for an update on the missing luggage. “I waited outside the airport for two hours but there was no update. The airline gave me a property irregularity report for my complaint. Its phone helplines have been unresponsive since,” she claimed.

Astha is enraged that the airline failed to flag the coconut issue soon after her luggage was checked in Bengaluru. “If they had reached out to us at Bengaluru airport itself, we would have discarded the coconuts and got our bag with our wedding clothes. We had no clue dry coconuts were banned on flights,” she said.

Delhi: Winter’s here, IGI plans to cut through the fog

New Delhi: Delhi airport operator DIAL on Sunday said it was all geared up to deal with the winter fog in the capital, which may disrupt flight operations from mid-December — like it does every year. While a ceilometer is installed at the airport to ascertain the fog depth in advance, air traffic controllers, airlines, ground handlers, the meteorological department and the airport staff are working together to ensure that all terminals are prepared to deal with the situation.

But with the airport operator already struggling to maintain social distancing amid the increased passenger traffic, which according to the data accessed by TOI has touched 70% of the pre-pandemic days, the dense winter fog is likely to pose much bigger challenges.

The DIAL spokesperson said: “Amid all the challenges, preparations like efficiently putting in place Delhi airport’s collaborative decision-making cell, which has representatives of the air traffic control, domestic airlines and DIAL, will be done timely.”

The airport is well equipped to handle operations safely during the periods of poor visibility, according to Airports Authority of India spokesperson JB Singh.

“The runways are equipped with low-visibility procedure so that flights can take off and land efficiently,” added Singh.

Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) is a set of procedures established at an aerodrome in support of CAT-II/III approaches and landings and of takeoffs with runway visual range below 550 meters. With the help of the procedure, which is used 30 minutes before an aircraft takes off or lands during poor weather conditions, flights are able to operate with ease.

“To ensure the comfort requirements of the recently increased number of passengers at IGI during instances of flight disruptions and cancellations and in view of the Covid norms for social distancing, the number of chairs and recliners is being increased,” the DIAL spokesperson added.

Passengers from 'at risk' countries will have to undergo RT-PCR test on arrival in Delhi

New Delhi: In wake of Omicron variant, Delhi’s IGI Airport has from Sunday morning started conducting RT-PCR tests on all arrivals from the 12 areas designated as high risk countries — countries in Europe including UK, South Africa, Brazil, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Israel.

Arrivals from three Omicron hotspots — South Africa, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong — will be required to wait at the airport for their test report and only those found negative will be allowed to leave, say sources. Those testing positive will be sent to designated Covid centres.

Arrivals from other at risk countries will be allowed to leave after their sample and the result will be conveyed to them electronically, with the same protocol for those testing positive or negative.

The government on Sunday morning is learnt to have conducted a review of travel rules after the new mutant has been found in Southern Africa and subsequently in some other parts of the world, including the UK.

Many countries have started imposing new restrictions or test rules which mainly include suspending flights to southern Africa for some period. UK, for instance, has changed testing and isolation rules for all arrivals starting November 30, 4 am (local time). All international arrivals to the UK will need to take a Day 2 PCR test and self-isolate until they receive a negative test.

Model design of India’s biggest airport mocked by netizens for passing off exactly like Beijing airport

The upcoming Noida International Airport in Uttar Pradesh, India, which is expected to surpass Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to become the largest in the country, went viral on social media over the weekend for having used a photo of Beijing Daxing International Airport as its model design, drawing ridicules from both Indian and Chinese netizens.

The Noida International Airport project was launched on Thursday by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the foundation stone of the first phase. It is scheduled to be completed by 2024 with a capacity of 12 million passenger flows annually, local media reported.

"By the last phase of development, the Noida International Airport will even surpass IGI and become India's leading airport," said the country's aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia at the ceremony. The final phase is expected to be completed by 2040-50 with a capacity to handle 70 million passengers annually, reports said.

However, the mega project flopped on Twitter shortly after releasing the news, as netizens found that the concept photo illustrating model design of the airport, which was shared widely among local officials and media outlets, turned out to be the Beijing Daxing International Airport in China's capital.

"The [Modi's] party cannot make an original design, just a design, how will they build the real structure itself? It's Shame," said one netizen on Twitter.

"It's extremely shameful," noted another, "Our legends in non-political fields have spent years to make India shine. Don't spoil our nation's image like this just for your political advantage," said another Indian netizen.

The Beijing Daxing International Airport, which locates in the southern part of the Chinese capital, was put into use in September 2020, and handled nearly 39 million passenger trips the first year. The airport, nicknamed "Starfish," is featured by cutting-edge technology with high efficiency, and is expected to handle 72 million passengers by 2025.

RT-PCR tests mandatory at Gujarat airports for fliers from these countries

New Delhi: Amid concerns over the new Omicron variant of coronavirus, the Gujarat government has introduced fresh travel guidelines for fliers from over 40 countries arriving at airports in the state.

Travellers from Europe, UK, Brazil, South Africa, Bangladesh, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong will have to undergo mandatory RT-PCR tests on landing at any airport in Gujarat.

Mumbai has also imposed similar restrictions on incoming travellers from South Africa at the city’s international airport. Those arriving in Mumbai from South Africa will be quarantined; if found Covid-positive, their samples will be sent for genome sequencing.

On Friday, the World Health Organisation designated SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.529 as a ‘variant of concern’. The new coronavirus variant, which has been detected in South Africa, Hong Kong, Israel and Botswana, was named Omicron.

The WHO classified the variant as a “highly transmissible virus of concern”, the same category that includes the predominant delta variant of the coronavirus. In a bid to contain this new Covid-19 threat, countries across the world have rushed to impose travel bans.

Omicron's actual risks are not understood yet. But early evidence suggests it carries an increased risk of re-infection compared with other highly transmissible variants, the WHO said.

Two passengers from South Africa test Covid positive at India’s Bengaluru airport, quarantined

Bengaluru: Two passengers from South Africa tested positive for COVID-19 at an airport in India’ southern Karnataka state.

The authorities from the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru city on Saturday said that their test samples have been sent to a virology lab to ascertain whether they are infected with Omicron variant of coronavirus.

The health department officials said the test results will take another 48 hours to arrive.

Both have been sent to quarantine centres, and they will stay there till their test results confirm the new variant.

Around 584 people landed in Bengaluru from 10 “high-risk” nations, out of which 94 individuals have come from South Africa alone, according to Bengaluru Rural Deputy Commissioner K Srinivas.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting with top bureaucrats to assess the Covid situation in the country.

During the meeting, Modi asked officials to review their order on easing international travel restrictions in the light of Omicron variant that is slowly being reported from various parts of the world.

He also asked officials to step up screening at all international airports and ensure that strict Covid guidelines are followed.

Air tickets costlier now, bookings low from Kolkata

Additional expenses like Covid tests and insurance premiums and frequently changing health and travel norms continue to make international travellers feel apprehensive and so despite several new routes opening up from Kolkata, the bookings are low.

Tour operators said high fares due to less number of flights along with the additional costs were keeping many fliers waiting to make the bookings for international travel.

India has announced resumption of international commercial flights from December 15. However, the civil aviation ministry said 14 countries designated by the health ministry to be at risk, and with whom there is an existing air bubble agreement, would be allowed to resume 75 per cent of pre-Covid operations (or a minimum of seven frequencies per week).

A Kolkata airport official said they were expecting an increase in the number of international flights from Kolkata after the announcement.

“We are expecting more flights in a week to destinations like Dubai. There would be some more flights resuming from Kolkata,” said the official.

However, several travel agents said because of the additional expenses and confusions over changing protocols they were apprehensive about bulk international travels immediately.

“At the moment only those who have compulsions like students are making international travels. Due to the additional costs of Covid protocol and high fares, the queries for travel during Christmas holidays are more but actual bookings are far less,” said Anil Punjabi, chairman, east, Travel Agents Federation of India. “Also, there are changing protocols at some countries which are causing packages to fluctuate and adding to the confusion,” he said.

Among the added expenses, which were not there during the pre-Covid times, are the Covid tests a flier now has to undergo.

A flier to Dubai has to undergo an additional Rapid PCR test at Kolkata airport before boarding the flight that costs Rs 4,000 along with the routine RT-PCR test that has to be conducted within 72 hours of the journey.

“A passenger who wants to travel to Canada’s Ottawa has to spend around Rs 11,000 for a Covid test,” said a travel agent in Kolkata.

“The passenger, who was planning a visit to his family members there, is now deferring the travel because it would be an additional expenditure because he would be travelling with his wife and two children,” said the agent.

Along with the tests, buying insurance coverage has also become mandatory for all international travellers.

“On an average, a passenger has to pay Rs 1,000 as premium for Covid health insurance which can go up depending on age and duration of stay. Earlier, the health insurance coverage was not mandatory for most countries,” said Amin Asgar, director of A&A Travel Zone Pvt Ltd.

Tour operators said there are mandatory hotel stays in some countries after arrival for the period till the Covid test results are out.

Some countries have seven to ten days of quarantine programmes.

Explained: The importance of Jewar airport, why it is needed and the areas it will serve

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Noida International Airport (NIA) at Jewar, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. The project is part of the government’s plan to expand existing airports and build new ones to both support growth of regional air traffic and to sustain air traffic growth in the congested metros.

Imminent saturation of the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi presents a case for a second airport in the National Capital Region to handle the future traffic projections.

The airport, the first phase of which is scheduled to open in 2024, is being built through a public private partnership (PPP) with an investment of Rs 5,730 crore. The airport will be spread over an area of 5,000 hectares, and is being developed by Zurich International Airport AG.

The company Noida International Airport Ltd was incorporated in 2018 as a joint venture of the Government of Uttar Pradesh (through its Department of Civil Aviation), NOIDA, Greater NOIDA, and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) in the ratio of 37.5% to 37.5% to 12.5% to 12.5%.

A concession agreement was signed in October last year with the concessionaire, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), an SPV of the bid-winner Zurich International Airport AG. In 2019, the Swiss company offered a bid of Rs 400.97 per passenger and emerged as the winner, outbidding infrastructure players such as the Adani Group.

In early December last year, Zurich Airport International selected a consortium consisting of Nordic, Grimshaw, Haptic, and STUP as the architects to design the passenger terminal of the airport. The design of the airport focuses on short and efficient passenger flows, and digital and tech-enabled customer services, according to the developers.

A second airport in the NCR was planned well before the Covid-19 pandemic, aimed mainly at reducing the burden on IGI Airport, which is expected to reach its peak capacity of handling close to 110 million passengers annually within the next decade.

In the first phase, the Noida International Airport will have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually with one runway and 25 aircraft stands. The capacity of the airport is expected to increase to 70 million passengers per annum by 2050. Once the new airport begins operation, it will release valuable slots for airlines operating to the NCR region, bringing relief in the current congested scenario.

In the initial phase, the airport will only operate domestic flights. YIAPL CEO Christoph Schnellmann said: “The strong recovery in the aviation sector along with the government’s initiative to develop and expand airports will not only help meet the growing demand for travel but also encourage higher connectivity between tier 2 and 3 cities in the country. Noida International Airport will connect western Uttar Pradesh to other cities in India and the world. This world class airport will set a benchmark in aviation infrastructure and development of multiple-airport systems in India.”

Jewar Airport will come up about 72 km from IGI Airport, 40 km from Noida, and about 40 km from the multi-modal logistics hub at Dadri. The airport will have multi-modal connectivity owing to its proximity to the Greater Noida-Agra Yamuna Expressway, and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and will be linked with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway at Ballabhgarh, the Khurja-Jewar NH 91, and the dedicated freight corridor.

Have taken up with Pakistan issue of overflight clearances for Srinagar-Sharjah flights: India

India on Friday said it has taken up with Pakistan the matter of overflight clearances for flights from Srinagar to Sharjah, but has not got a response yet.

Earlier this month, government officials said Pakistan has denied use of its airspace to Go First's Srinagar-Sharjah flight. According to officials, till October 31, the flight was going through Pakistan airspace.

Asked about the issue at a media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "We have taken up the matter with the government of Pakistan for overflight clearances of flights from Srinagar to Sharjah. We have not received a response."

Asked if India was considering reciprocal measures and stop overflight clearances to PIA flights to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Bagchi said, "I don't have any indication of whether we are looking at the kind of steps you had alluded to."

To a separate question on a cargo ship from Karachi to China detained by Indian authorities and media reports on the "seizure of possible radioactive material", he said that there was a seizure of a ship, rather of containers, and the Department of Atomic Energy has sent a team to look at what exactly the containers contain

Thoothukudi-bound flight with TN Assembly Speaker on board diverted, two Shirdi flights cancelled

Chennai: An Air India flight to Thoothukudi with Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M Appavu and 34 passengers on board was diverted to Trichy in view of bad weather due to heavy rains, even as bad weather forced cancellation of flights to and from Shirdi, today.

Airport sources said the Air India flight took off at 1355 hrs. But it could not land in Thoothukudi due to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning following which the authorities asked the crew to return to Chennai.

However, the authorities later decided to divert it to Trichy. Once the weather cleared, it will depart for Thoothukudi.

Meanwhile, a Shirdi-bound Spicejet flight with 190 passengers on board and the return flight with 105 passengers were cancelled due to bad weather in Shirdi.

Airport authorities initially said the flight was delayed and later announced that it was cancelled as the weather has not cleared and that it would leave for Shirdi tomorrow.

Soon after the authorities cancellation of the flight to Shirdi, some of the passengers were engaged in heated argument with the airline officials as the corona negative test report taken 48 hrs before the journey would expire by tomorrow.

They also demanded exemption from it as they will be forced to take another test which would cost Rs 900.

However, airport authority off.

Delhi’s IGI was busier than Dubai airport in November

New Delhi: The pandemic has flipped the pecking order of world airports. This month, Delhi's IGI Airport was busier than Dubai International Airport in terms of combined domestic and international seat capacity deployed by airlines.

At close to 30.9 lakh, IGIA is the seventh busiest airport globally this month, ahead of Dubai at a little over 30.7 lakh, according to UK-based air consultancy firm OAG. In pre-pandemic November 2019, Dubai was at number 3 and IGIA at number 10.

While Dubai remains the world's busiest international airport by seats, IGIA does not figure in the list of top 10 international airports due to continued restrictions on scheduled foreign flights by India. The revival of domestic air travel in India has led to a revival of footfall at airports, making IGIA overtake Dubai in overall seat capacity.

In pre-pandemic times, nearly 60% of the international traffic between India and the rest of the world flew foreign airlines. Of them, Gulf carriers took the lion's share in terms of both point to point and connecting traffic. "If India is able to take steps to lower the steep operating cost structures for its airlines and the latter are able to mount more nonstops to the rest of the world, including distant continents, then the blow to airlines of nearby hubs will be big. Transit traffic to and from India is a big source of filling the planes of these airlines," said an airline official.

Kushinagar-Delhi SpiceJet flight to begin from Friday

Gorakhpur: The first domestic flight from Kushinagar International Airport for Delhi will start from Friday. The airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20 and SpiceJet airlines will provide the air service.

Giving this information on Wednesday, airport director AK Dwivedi said, “From Friday, Kushinagar International Airport is becoming functional with the launch of the first flight between Kushinagar and Delhi by SpiceJet. From next month, flights for two more cities-for Kolkata from December 17 and for Mumbai from December 18, will start.”

Despite a rich cultural heritage of the place, Kushinagar was among the most backward places of Purvanchal. But after becoming the chief minister in 2017, Yogi Adityanath strengthened the infrastructure of the district and also provided it with an international airport for air connectivity and opened a new gateway of development of the entire area.

It is the third functional international airport of the state to have domestic flights. Kushinagar is the land of Lord Buddha and with the air connectivity of the place, there are chances that flights for Buddhist countries like Sri Lanka, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and Singapore may start from here soon.

The flight to Delhi will be available four times a week — Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The flight will take off from Delhi at 12 and reach Kushinagar at 1.35 pm and from Kushinagar it will take off at 1.55 pm and land in Delhi at 3.55 pm.

From December 17, flights for Kolkata from Kushinagar will be operational for three days a week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On December 17, the flight will take off at 1.35pm from Kolkata and land in Kushinagar at 3.20pm and from Kushinagar it will take off at 3.40pm and land in Kolkata at 5.15pm.

Plans to use international departure space for domestic flights at Pune airport

Pune: City airport authorities have requested the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to allow them to handle domestic operations from the international departure area to effectively control the crowd.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Pune Airport Advisory Committee meeting on Wednesday, airport director Santosh Dhoke said that in addition to this, a requisition has been sent to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) headquarters in Delhi to increase the number of Central Industrial Security Force personnel by 200.

“At present, the airport is 12 hours operational but from December 1, it would operate 24 hours. This would require spacing of flights. The total flights’ movement after December 1 is expected to grow. We are looking at a total of 160 to 180 flight movements daily after December 1,” Dhoke said.

He said with this, the number of passengers is also expected to rise. “Thus, a request has been sent to BCAS to allow us to use the international departure area of the airport to process domestic passengers. This will help in better crowd management,” Dhoke said.

Before the pandemic outbreak, the Pune airport had two international flights to Dubai operated by SpiceJet and Air India Express.

Shillong-Delhi flight stopped

Shillong: The Shillong-Delhi flight service has turned out to be a major disappointment for residents of the state capital.

FlyBig had launched the flight service connecting the Meghalaya capital with Delhi with much fanfare in December 2020. The service has been stopped for unknown reasons and it is unlikely to be resumed soon.

Shillong Airport officials said FlyBig has not been operating for a long time. The airline, which had suspended services once earlier, confirmed they are not operating on the route “as of now”.

The operation was stopped a few days after Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma had travelled to Delhi in October.

It is learnt that the company was not getting a sufficient number of passengers and many people were not aware of the service. The airline also did not publicise its service or flight schedule extensively.

Ravi Kant, the Regional Executive Director (North Eastern Region) denied that the cancellation of flights to and from the Shillong Airport is frequent.

“Flights often get cancelled due to bad weather in this route,” he said.

He, however, said the airport has a Very High-Frequency Omni-Directional Range and Instrument Landing System for flights to land in poor visibility.

Kolkata airport traffic yet to take off and touch pre-pandemic level

All facilities have opened up in the city but Kolkata airport has far fewer passengers and flights than what it used to before the Covid pandemic, which has made the authorities defer an expansion plan for the terminal even further.

According to the authorities, Kolkata airport is handling around 350 flights everyday on an average as against more than 500 before the pandemic.

The passenger count would also be much less compared to earlier times by the end of this financial year, airport officials said.

In the financial year 2019-20, the airport had handled 22 million passengers in one year. In 2020-21, the number had dropped to around 7.5 million, said an official.

In the current financial year, till now, around eight million passengers have used the airport but officials apprehend that the number would be nowhere near the pre-pandemic times by March 31.

“The restrictions of domestic flights from cities like Mumbai and Chennai have been lifted by the state government since the first week of October. However, the number of domestic flights and passengers is still less compared to pre-pandemic times,” said C. Pattabhi, the director of Kolkata airport, said on Tuesday.

He said the numbers were even lower for international flights and passengers.

For the domestic sector, on an average, 50,000 passengers are using the airport daily as against 65,000 earlier.

PM to lay foundation stone of Noida International Airport on Nov 25

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh will soon become the only state in India to have five international airports with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to lay the foundation stone of the Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar on Thursday.

The development of the airport is in line with the vision of Prime Minister Modi to boost connectivity and create a future-ready aviation sector, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement on Tuesday.

A special focus of this grand vision has been on Uttar Pradesh that is witnessing the development of multiple new international airports including the recently inaugurated Kushinagar airport and the under-construction international airport at Ayodhya.

Uttar Pradesh is poised to become the only state in India to have five international airports as Prime Minister Modi will lay the foundation stone of the Noida International Airport in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar, on November 25 at 1 PM, the PMO said.

The development of the first phase of the airport is being done at a cost of over Rs 10,050 crore, it said.

Spread over more than 1,300 hectares of land, the completed first phase of the airport will have the capacity to serve around 1.2 crore passengers a year and work on it is scheduled to be completed by 2024, it added.

It will be executed by international bidder Zurich Airport International AG as concessionaire.

The groundwork for the first phase regarding land acquisition and rehabilitation of the affected families has been completed, the statement said.

This airport will be the second international airport to come up in Delhi-NCR, it noted and added that it will help decongest the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

It is strategically located and will serve the people of cities including Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Agra, Faridabad and neighbouring areas, it said.

The airport will be the logistics gateway of northern India and due to its scale and capacity, it will be a game changer for Uttar Pradesh, the PMO said.

It will unleash the potential of Uttar Pradesh to the world, and help establish the state on the global logistics map, it said.

HAL turns down NMPML proposal to allow buses to enter airport terminal

Nashik: The Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), which manages the Nashik Airport, has turned down the proposal of Nashik Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (NMPML) to allow its buses to enter the airport terminal premises to drop and pick up passengers.

Last month, NMPML, the public transport wing of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), had requested HAL to allow its buses to stop at the airport terminal premises for some time so that air travellers reaching the Nashik Airport can avail the bus service.

NMPML has started buses to Mohadi via Nashik Airport with frequency of 30 minutes. Currently, the buses are stopping at the main entrance gate of the airport terminal building.

The distance between the main gate and the airport terminal building is about 200 m. It would be inconvenient for the passengers to reach the airport building with luggage if they get down from the bus at the main gate. Hence, NMPML wanted HAL to allow its buses to enter the airport premises.

Parking fee slashed at Thiruvananthapuram airport

Thiruvananthapuram: Soon after the takeover, Adani Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (ATIAL) has slashed the parking fee at the airport. The parking fee has been slashed from Rs 85 for 15 minutes to Rs 30. A senior official close to the ATIA said, “We don’t know what the previous airport operators charged as parking fee. The new rate is applicable in all airports controlled by the Adani Group.”

From now on, the cars coming to the airport to drop or pick up a traveller need not pay the parking charges.

The owners have to pay the fee only if the vehicles enter the parking bay. When asked whether the airport operator will slash the parking and landing fee of the aircraft in the airports, the official said the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA) takes a call on matters like slashing or increasing such charges or user development fee.

The airport was taken over by the ATIAL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, on October 14. The Adani Group, which is constructing the Rs 7,525-crore Vizhinjam international seaport in Thiruvananthapuram district, had won the bid for the 89-year-old airport held in February 2019. As per the bid agreement, the private company will operate, manage and develop the airport for a period of 50 years under a concession agreement signed with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Kolhapur airport wins Udan Award

Kolhapur: City’s Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj airport has won ministry of civil aviation’s Udan Award in the ‘unserved airport with most regional connectivity routes operationalised’ category.

Kamal Kumar Kataria, director of Kolhapur airport, said, “It is a wonder that a small airport like Kolhapur has won such a big award. All this became possible only because of our numerous passengers, staff, stakeholders, media and the administration.”

The award was presented in presence of civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, chairman of Airport authority of India Sanjeev Kumar and other dignitaries at Odisha’s Jharsuguda Airport. ‘

“Alliance Air, Indigo and Trujet Airlines also received awards for their outstanding service,” Kataria added.

Pune airport: Runway light glitch sparks flight delays & diversions

Pune: At least three flights were diverted and over a dozen delayed due to a glitch in a circuit of lights on the edge of the runway of the Pune airport on Monday evening.

Sources at the airport said while operations slowly resumed and five flights landed after 7:30pm, the work on the runway lights was being carried out by the Indian Air Force (IAF). The runway and the air traffic control of the airport is managed by the IAF.

“After the runway recarpeting, the IAF is currently working on the lights of the runway. One of the circuits of the runway-edge lights developed a snag, which led to the diversions and delays,” a source at the airport told TOI.

Between 6pm and 9pm, 12 arrivals and 10 departures were delayed by over an hour because of the snag. An Air India flight coming to Pune from Delhi was diverted to Hyderabad, while a SpiceJet flight from Kolkata was diverted to Mumbai. An Indigo flight from Pune to Bengaluru was diverted to Mumbai. Flights from cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai were delayed. Similarly, flights taking off for destinations such as Nagpur, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata were delayed.

Marhatta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture president Sudhir Mehta, who was flying in an Air India flight, told TOI, “We are at the Hyderabad airport and airline officials said that the flight will take off for Pune in around half-an-hour. The pilot announced the diversion of the flight on the ground that there was a problem with the runway lights at the Pune airport. These incidents show how badly the city needs a new airport.”

Many cultural events, including the Khajuraho dance festival, are organised at this place.

Month on, Srinagar-Sharjah flight witnessing 90% occupancy

Srinagar: The Srinagar-Sharjah direct flight, which completes one month of operations on Tuesday, has been a runaway success as the flight is presently witnessing 90 per cent passenger occupancy.

The flight was flagged-off by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on October 23 and despite witnessing initial hiccups, the flight operating from a longer route now, has gained popularity among the Kashmiri travelers.

An official told Greater Kashmir that as many as 5000 passengers have travelled to and fro on the Srinagar-Sharjah flight during the last one month.

“We have been operating 4 flights per week and almost 170 passenger occupancy in each flight. This direct flight at present is witnessing almost 90 per cent passenger occupancy and if all goes well we expect the passenger footfalls to increase in days to come,” said the official.

Despite all odds, the flight has gained popularity among travelers especially trade fraternity. The official said the flight is now taking an additional 40 minutes to reach Sharjah, after Pakistan refused to allow the flights to use its air space. However, the official said despite a longer route, people prefer to travel on this flight.

Musadiq Shah, vice-president of Kashmir Pashmina Organisation said people in general and trade community in particular have been benefited by the direct flight. Shah said there should be more direct international flights connecting Srinagar to other overseas destinations.

“This has not just provided a boost to the travel community but those travelling to visit friends and relatives also find it quite convenient to board this flight” said Shah.

Shah who also heads the Kashmir Art Retailers in Dubai said the direct flight has also provided an impetus to tourist influx from the UAE to Kashmir.

“We are getting to hear that there are plans to start direct cargo goods service between Srinagar and Sharjah. That will be a huge boost to trade in Kashmir” Shah said.

Golden jackals on runway: Chipi Airport’s new problem

Mumbai: The newly opened Chipi Airport in Sindhudurg has an unexpected problem — 25 to 30 golden jackals have been regularly straying on to the runway.

Unable to keep them away, local forest office and airport authorities are seeking permission to capture and translocate the animals to a new habitat.

At least three packs of 25 to 30 golden jackals have been spotted inside the airport perimeter. The landing of a flight from Mumbai had to be delayed when the animals were spotted on the runway.

Pilots have been reporting jackals on or near the runway of the airport, which runs three daily flights to and from Mumbai.

“The area is huge, with wall fencing around its 275-acre premises. It, however, has heavy grasslands in the surroundings. This area is not a recorded forest land, but now these jackals have also been sighted on the runway,” said Ben Clement, chief conservator of forests (territorial).

Local residents have alerted authorities about gaps in the fencing of the airport.

Golden jackals (Canus aureus) are protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act. They are omnivores that eat fruits, birds, insects, fish and small mammals. Hunting and trade of jackals is a punishable offence.

“These are small animals, thus tranquilising would be risky. Instead, we are in the process of seeking permission to trap these animals to release them into the grassland areas within the district,” said Clement.

The grassland cover around the airport makes it conducive for jackals. Golden jackals live in grasslands, scrublands, open/barren lands and ravines.

The forest department has also suggested that the airport authorities periodically clear shrub and grass that attract the jackals.

Tripura: Suspicious Bag Triggers Bomb Scare At Agartala Airport

Agartala: In a breaking development, a suspicious bag has been found near the Maharaja Bir Bikram airport in Agartala, amid political violence and a BJP-TMC faceoff in Tripura. The bag was found at the parking lot where TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s vehicles were parked. After reports of the suspicious bag being found at the Agartala airport surfaced, the bomb squad and airport security were rushed to the spot to look for possible explosives planted ahead of Banerjee’s visit to the city.

“A suspicious bag has been found in Agartala Airport at around 9:45 am. Someone has left the bag on the site which led to suspicion that it could contain explosives. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team has cordoned off the whole premises and entry-exit routes have been modified. The disposal team is at work and the airport Director shall brief the press shortly,” MBB Airport Manager Jempu Hoakip was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

However, no explosive material has been found in the region and the airport has been cordoned off.

The TMC has scheduled a number of rallies in Agartala despite the Tripura Police denying permission for any political events fearing violence.

How airport advertising is taking off

With the pandemic shredding every hope of physical proximity and socialising to bits, most people have not been able to travel for close to two years.    But now experts suggest, a dip in the number of active Covid-19 cases and the festive season has led them to indulge in ‘revenge travel’ and fly borders to be reunited with their loved ones and take their much-needed vacations.    The joint sentiments of travellers have caused a preposterous increase in air traffic at airports. This has given brands the set-off to enhance their presence, leading to added investments in airport advertising.    However, with the return of travel, we are seeing increased wait times, perpetuated lines at airport counters, delayed flights and overall chaos, that may end up upsetting the traveller, who might not be in the best mind space to view the many innovations and ads displayed by brands.    Will this phenomenon guarantee a positive brand recall or sales conversion for a brand?

Giving some context to the current situation, Aman Nanda, chief strategy officer, Times OOH, explained, “Domestic passengers are now arriving almost 120 minutes before flight departure times, whereas for international, the dwell time is over 240 minutes. For some destinations like the UAE, passengers have to come to the airport almost 360 minutes before flight departures, due to new mandates of the Rapid RT-PCR at the airport.”   Experts agree that the increased dwell time has had brands undeniably vying for airport advertising, with a hope of being seen by the myriads of waiting passengers.     Ambi Parameswaran, founder - Brand-Building.com, believed that excessive wait time is both a blessing, as well as a curse for brands that advertise in airports and for airport shops. “The wait time may help sell more goods, but might also cause empty browsing by passengers who have to kill time,” he added.

Nanda pointed out that brands have moved towards airport advertising quite positively in the new normal. He shared how the domestic passenger footfall at the Mumbai, Kolkata, Indore, Trichy, and Coimbatore airports have grown by 200% in October, as against June 2021.   Listing a reason crucial enough for brands to consider advertising in the skies, Srivastava said, “Post pandemic, air transport is being seen as the cleanest and quickest way to commute, given the aesthetically safe environment and contactless process that airports are now offering.”   Times OOH also revealed that it has a healthy pipeline of interest from brands, especially post the festive season.    Speaking of how high Volkswagen Passenger Cars, India, flies in terms of advertising at airports, its head of marketing, Abbey Thomas claimed that the brand has actively increased its presence, especially at the Mumbai and New Delhi airports, as it witnesses a higher influx of passenger travel. However, the brand is currently focusing on outdoor sites outside the airport.

No elevated car ramp, Noida airport will have a walkway to the terminal

New Delhi: You won’t be driving up an elevated ramp to reach the departure level, as you do at Delhi’s IGIA, at Noida International Airport (NIA) when it gets operational in 2024.

You will, however, have to walk a bit. The approach to the terminal building of NIA will be through a pathway under a canopied roof that will take you from the point where the car drops you straight to the forecourt, which is at the same level but around 300 metres away.

Taking in a view of the terminal in front, you can take escalators or elevators to the departure level on the first floor. The ‘missing’ ramp is part of the design philosophy for this airport that developer Zurich AG promises will be a fusion of local culture and Swiss efficiency.

“We are building a terminal that is clearly at home in UP, rooted in the tradition of the region and where passengers immediately feel welcome,” NIA CEO Christoph Schnellmann told TOI. The forecourt, for instance, has steps that are inspired by the iconic ghats of Varanasi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the airport in Jewar on Thursday (Nov 25). The airport design, like many of its other aspects, including the selection of the concessionaire, was finalised during the lockdown.

Ashwini Thorat, the NIA VP who heads planning and design for this greenfield airport, took architects selected through a competition on a virtual tour of UP’s key architectural mascots — the ghats of Varanasi, temples, the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and havelis — as well as its rivers. “We had to strike the right balance between providing efficient global infrastructure and giving a very, very local experience, reflecting Indian warmth and hospitality,” she said.

The end result is NIA features like the sprawling forecourt in front of the terminal and a courtyard in the post-security check-pre-boarding area that draws from the concept of a temple’s or a haveli’s ‘aangan’. Red granite stone will be used for the sandstone feel with aluminium meshes on the walls – modern versions of the ‘jaali’.

The airport will have internal green spaces, something Singapore’s Changi excels at, for “biophilia” — the soothing instinct to connect with nature. “NIA will be the only airport where people in the security hold area can go to the open area of the courtyard before boarding their flight when weather permits,” said Thorat, who led Zurich Airport International’s greenfield design phase for Bangalore airport.

The airport land has around 11,000 trees. NIA said it has geo-tagged every tree and collected details of each. “We identified the native trees and the foreign ones that shouldn’t ideally be in this environment. Then we studied how many need to be preserved, how many can be transplanted and how many can be cut. The native species — neem and Kadamba, the tree associated with Krishna — will be preserved for posterity,” said Thorat.

Work begins on second major airport for India's National Capital Region

New Delhi: The vast urban sprawl in and around Delhi - known as the National Capital Region (NCR) - will soon have two major airports, expected to be the first megapolis in India to do so.

Located in the town of Jewar in Uttar Pradesh state, Noida International Airport (NIA) is scheduled to be launched in the last quarter of 2024. This is expected to relieve pressure on Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi, which is currently India's busiest.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has dented aviation growth, the NCR region, with a population of around 50 million and its strong long-term demand for more flights, has a pressing need for a second major airport.

IGIA is expected to reach saturation point by 2030 with around 110 million passengers annually. The region currently has a second but smaller airport in Ghaziabad that handles a few regional flights.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the high-profile NIA project on Thursday (Nov 25). The ceremony is part of a publicity blitz featuring several infrastructure projects ahead of elections early next year in India's most populous state, where Mr Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party hopes to retain power.

Spread over 1,334ha, the airport in Jewar is being developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International. The firm plans to open a terminal catering to 12 million passengers in the airport's first phase of development by the end of 2024.

An additional terminal will see the airport cater to around 70 million passengers annually by the end of the 40-year concession agreement that Zurich Airport International signed with the Uttar Pradesh government in October last year.

During this period, the number of aircraft movements on NIA's two runways is expected to grow from 96,400 to 489,700 per year.

Mr Daniel Bircher, YIAPL's chairman and managing director, told The Straits Times the catchment area of the NCR region is large enough for two major airports, with estimates indicating that it could account for as many as 200 million passengers by the end of the 40-year concession period.

"Delhi NCR being, I would say, one of the largest metropolitan areas on the whole planet, definitely needs additional airport capacity," he said, giving examples of other metropolises, such as London, Tokyo and Sao Paulo, that have more than one airport each.

Gaggal Airport expansion: Security clearance for bridge awaited

Dharamsala: The state government is awaiting security clearance for a bridge over the Manji river for the expansion of the Gaggal airport.

Sources say that the report for security clearance of the proposed bridge was sent to the Union Ministry for Civil Aviation in August but no response had been received since then. The river passes through Gaggal where the airport is located.

The sources say that the airstrip needs to be expanded from the present length of 1,372 metres to 3,010 metres for the airport expansion. A bridge has been proposed over the river which can handle the weight of bigger planes. Union ministry experts will evaluate whether the bridge will be viable for the expansion of the airport or not.

They say that the land acquisition process for airport expansion can only begin after security clearance for the bridge. As per the state government’s proposal, 144 hectares are required, including 120 hectares private land. The remaining 24 hectares is government land, much of which is under the possession of individuals.

Deputy Commissioner, Nipun Jindal says the security clearance from the Union ministry is awaited and it is likely to be received soon.

Another bottleneck for the expansion of the airport is the non-availability of funds. The Finance Commission had announced Rs 400 crore for the project. However, as per the report prepared by revenue officials of Kangra, about Rs 500 crore would be required for the acquisition of 120 hectares.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur during a recent visit to Dharamsala had said that the state government was persuading the Union Government for more funds.

The Central Government has listed the Gaggal airport for disinvestment till March 2022. The airport is the busiest airport of the state receiving five flights daily, including four between Dharamsala and Delhi and one between Chandigarh and Delhi.

Despite Pak's refusal to allow overflights, India determined to strengthen Srinagar-Sharjah air corridor

New Delhi: Despite Pakistan's refusal to allow overflights, India is determined to strengthen the Srinagar-Sharjah air corridor, by increasing flights (already 4 a week and likely to go up to 6) and strengthening trade ties.

India is building a new cargo terminal in Srinagar for the export of goods to Sharjah and other parts of West Asia. It should be ready in a month. To ensure more international travel out of Srinagar and not just to Sharjah, a new terminal is under construction as is one in Jammu.

Despite the threat of violence and attacks on workers from other parts of India, air traffic out of Srinagar -- always a sign of economic activity-- is growing rapidly.

In September 2020, there were 1,093 flights into and out of Srinagar, carrying 140,077 passengers. It went up to 1,227 flights with 163,053 passengers in October. While this is already impressive, the corresponding figures for 2021 show a significant increase.

In September this year, there were 2,152 flights with 270,380 passengers and in October, 2,460 flights and 331,914 passengers. This includes international flights that Pakistan is desperate to hinder.

A similar rise is seen from Jammu airport. From 806 flights and 97,030 passengers in October 2020, the airport saw 1331 flights and 1,36,665 passengers last month-- more sign of economic activity in the union territory.

Goa airport runway lights suffer snag, lead to delays

Panaji: There were some nervous moments at Goa International Airport after the runway lights suffered a technical snag and the lone 2.3km runway went dark on Friday evening.

Given the high frequency operations, flight operations were disrupted for a short while and at least one flight was diverted to Mumbai as a precautionary measure.

The Indian Navy’s electrical team conducted a full inspection of the electrical circuits and ensured that the lights were back on before night fall.

“During the ongoing runway work, there was a technical snag around 4pm. The runway lights were restored by 5:05pm,” said a naval officer. The Navy had issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) at 4pm warning airlines about the glitch and the expected disruption in flight operations.

The airport at Dabolim operates out of the naval air base INS Hansa and the aerodrome is managed by the Indian Navy.

Due to the technical snag departing flights reported delays ranging from 10 minutes to 90 minutes. IndiGo flight 6E-5402 from Delhi was diverted to Mumbai while enroute to Goa.

“There was adequate visibility so the impact was for just 15 minutes. There will be some delay of 10-15 minutes which is to be expected.

Goa Airport director Gagan Malik said that the Navy’s Air Traffic Control had informed the airport authorities as soon as the technical snag was detected.

More than 200 airports in India by 2023-24: Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

New Delhi: Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Friday (November 19) said the Central government plans to double the number of airports in the country to more than 200 by the year 2023-24.

Addressing a conference of the ministers of civil aviation from states and UTs, he said the Centre plans to set up at least one heliport in each district in collaboration with states and UTs.

On the issue of seaplanes, the minister said that the states should provide capital support for this initiative.

Besides, he appealed to states and UTs to bring down VAT on aviation fuel as it contributes majorly to the operational cost of the flights.

Currently, India has one of the highest state governments levied VAT rates on jet fuel. This makes the overall cost of airline operations high.

According to industry estimates, ATF prices constitute over 40 per cent of the total operating cost of domestic carriers and this was 70 per cent higher than the global average.

Furthermore, Scindia said that the sector has a large cost-benefit ratio and also huge employment potential.

On the issue of drones, he said that rules have been framed for promoting the sector and that the `Production Linked Initiative` scheme will provide a further push.

In addition, he called upon the states and UTs to facilitate new airports by swiftly handling the land allotment issues.

Flights diverted, sent back as Tirupati rains inundates Renigunta airport

Heavy rains wreaked havoc in Tirupati on Thursday, inundating low-lying areas, disrupting vehicular and air traffic and plunging the temple town into darkness. Renigunta Airport was inundated, forcing the authorities to divert the flights. Hyderabad-Tirupati IndiGo flight was diverted to Bengaluru. The Hyderabad-Tirupati Air India and SpiceJet flights had to return to Hyderabad. Airport Director S Suresh said two passenger flights scheduled to land in Tirupati from Hyderabad and Bengaluru were asked to return. A scheduled flight from New Delhi has been cancelled due to the prevailing weather condition, he added.

The downpour caused severe hardships to devotees as the landslides forced the authorities to close roads leading to the Sri Venkateswara temple atop Tirumala. There was no electricity supply in the town since 3 pm after rain water entered a sub-station. Roads in several key areas of the town turned into cesspools due to incessant rains under the impact of northeast monsoon, which is active in Chittoor and Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh and adjoining coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Vehicular traffic came to a halt in usually busy areas like Gandhi Road, Tilak Road, AIR Bypass Road, Lakshmipuram, Leela Mahal and West Church Railway Under Bridge. Some residential colonies were also flooded, causing severe hardships to the residents.

Alipiri footpath to Tirumala temple was flooded with water gushing down from the hills. Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the affairs of the famous temple, had already announced closure of Alipiri and Srivari Mettu for two days in view of heavy rains forecast. Rains also affected the Vaikuntam Queue complex at Tirumala. Water entered into the cellar of the complex. The house of TTD Additional Executive Dharma Reddy's house was also inundated.

'Kannur to be Hajj embarkation point, wide-bodied aircraft to return to Calicut'

Malappuram: The Centre has given a favourable response to the state's request regarding resuming wide-bodied aircraft services from the Calicut International Airport, said state minister V Abdurahiman on Thursday.

He commented after meeting Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia in New Delhi. Abdurahiman, who is the Minister for Sports, Wakf and Hajj said he had called upon Scindia to raise the issues faced by Hajj pilgrims from Kerala.

"He said that the Centre was planning to resume wide-bodied aircraft at Calicut. The union minister said that a high-level committee has been appointed to study the possibilities. He said that wide-bodied aircraft services will resume once the committee had prepared a report," wrote Abdurahiman on Facebook.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation had imposed restrictions on wide-bodied aircraft at Calicut following an air crash in August 2020.

An Air India Express flight that was part of the Vande Bharat Mission had overrun the tabletop runway and crashed resulting in the death of 21 persons, including the pilots.

"Since the accident, the airport's revenue has taken a hit," Abdurahiman noted.

With the ban on wide-bodies aircraft existing at Calicut, the Ministry of Minority Affairs had excluded it from the list of embarkation points for Hajj.

"Under the circumstances, we asked the union minister to consider Kannur Aiport as an embarkation point this year. The minister gave a positive response. He said that wide-bodied aircrafts will be used for Hajj at the Kannur airport," said Abdurahiman.

Passenger footfall, flight numbers take off in Surat

Surat: The Diamond City flyers, after being forced to keep low due to the pandemic, are flying high and importantly, frequently again. In October, the Surat airport witnessed a footfall of 87,008 passengers compared to just 1,616 recorded in May 2020.

With the increase in number of passengers, the flight traffic at Surat airport too is getting busier by the day. Just a week back, Go First’s inaugural flight on the Delhi-Surat route got the traditional water cannon salute at the Surat airport.

After the Covid enforced lull, the start of the year saw flight activities picking up in Surat. In February 2021, Surat airport saw a footfall of 96,949 passengers, while last month it was 87,008. With no major disruption in sight, experts feel that the passenger numbers are likely to go as high as 1.5 lakh this month.

Working for better connectivity, increased flights and better amenities for passengers is a group that goes by the name of ‘we work for working airport at surat’. The group has a big presence on social media with its Facebook page boasting of close to 92,000 members.

The group has regular interactions not only with the officials of the Surat airport but also that of different airlines. Sanjay Jain, a businessman dealing in construction material, is an active member of the group.

Adani Airport Ltd against laying of boundary stones

Thiruvananthapuram: Fresh hurdles loom large over the development of the 16.4-km-long Parvathy Puthanar canal. The Adani Trivandrum International Airport Ltd (ATIAL) raised  objections to laying boundary stones to fix the alignments of the canal coming in the land under the possession of the Airports Authority of India (AAI). ATIAL recently took over Trivandrum International Airport as the concessionaire for the operation, management and development of the airport in PPP mode for a 50-years lease period.

In a letter sent to the director of inland navigation recently, ATIAL noted that AAI has installed vital air navigational installations in the areas where the alignments of the canals are lying and have urged the authorities to carry out a site inspection. It has objected to laying of boundary stones in the land acquired at Muttathara for the future development of the airport.

“We have completed the laying of boundary stones and now only the portion falling under the possession of AAI is remaining. Only after fixing the alignments, we will be able to submit the sketch to the revenue authorities to initiate land acquisition procedures,” said an official of the Coastal Shipping and Inland Navigation Department. The official said a joint inspection would be carried out soon.

ATIAL has raised objection to laying boundary stones in the land within the alignment beyond Perunelli Market, Muttathara, which was acquired and handed over to AAI in 1993-94. ATIAL pointed out that the acquired land now houses the CISF barrack where 100 personnel are staying and the alignment falls inside the barrack area at a distance of nine metres from the AAI compound wall along Parvathy Puthanar. As per the current alignment, one of the buildings of the CISF barrack falls in the boundary. ATIAL pointed out that the area is included in the area handed over to it.
