Singapore Airlines to add more flights to India in bid to expand network

Singapore’s flag carrier, Singapore Airlines (SIA), said it plans to expand its India network by adding more flights to and from Indian cities.

In its business update which was released together with the financial results, the airline said it plans to increase its services between Singapore and Chennai from 17 times weekly to 21 times weekly from October 29, with Scoot commencing daily operations to the city after Singapore Airlines transfers some of its Chennai services to its low-cost sister carrier.

In addition, Singapore Airlines will progressively increase its weekly service between Singapore and Hyderabad from seven times weekly to 12 times weekly, taking over Scoot’s daily services between the two cities, ANI reported.

As part of this move, Singapore Airlines will also offer daily morning and evening services to Bengaluru.

The airlines, however, said that these adjustments and flight additions are subject to regulatory approval.

“These adjustments are part of the continuous review of the SIA Group’s network and reflect its ability and flexibility to adjust operations between Singapore Airlines and Scoot to meet evolving customer demand,” the airline said.

The airline, which prides itself as being the “most awarded airline in the world” laid claim to another accolade as it was recently named Skytrax’s best airline in the world for 2023.

The Skytrax award is widely considered as the “Oscars” of the aviation industry. The last time it was recognised as the best airline in the world was in 2018.

For the first quarter which ended in June 2023, Singapore Airlines recorded total revenue of SGD4.48 billion ($3.37 billion), a rise of 14 percent compared with the same quarter last year.

Pratt & Whitney Takes $181 Million Hit Due To Go First Insolvency

Aircraft engine-maker Pratt & Whitney, which was blamed by Go First for its voluntary insolvency, will take a hit of $181 million due to a charge related to it. The company's operating profit fell 24% year-on-year to $230 million in the quarter ended June due to the impact of "a charge related to a customer insolvency of $181 million", it said in its Q2 results press release.

The U.S.-based aerospace company didn't directly name Go First as its customer. But Go First blamed its failing engines, which forced the airline to shut operations in May. Pratt & Whitney said that had it not been for the charge related to the customer's insolvency, the adjusted operating profit would have risen 44% year-on-year to $436 million in the June quarter.

Teenager Hindu girl detained at Jaipur airport attempting to travel to Pakistan to meet 'insta friend'

In yet another cross-border love story, security personnel apprehended a 16-year-old Hindu girl attempting to fly to Lahore, Pakistan, to meet a boy she had befriended online. As per a ToI report, the Hindu girl drew the attention of airport security at Jaipur International Airport when she was discovered inquiring for a ticket to Lahore. She, on the other hand, did not have a passport, visa, or any other documentation with her.

Swiftly, airport security handed her over to the airport police, where she initially identified herself as "Gazal Mohammad," a verified Pakistani national who had arrived in India three years ago with her aunt. However, she claimed that she decided to return to Pakistan due to her aunt's pressure to marry her cousin in Sikar.

Authorities were alarmed by the incident, especially given the recent case of a woman from Alwar district who had traveled to Pakistan to marry her lover. The Jaipur Police promptly alerted the state intelligence, prompting senior officials, including DCP (East) Gyan Chandra Yadav and ACP (Malviya Nagar) Chiranji Lal Meena, to join the investigation.

Efforts were made to locate the girl's aunt in Sikar, but by 6 pm, it was evident that no woman by that description or a girl named Gazal lived in the mentioned village. Upon further questioning, the girl finally confessed that her real identity was not Gazal; instead, she revealed that she resided in Chomu near Jaipur and attended school with her sister.

The girl admitted to having connected with a person named 'Aslam' from Lahore through Instagram, who had advised her to use the alias 'Gazal' while booking a flight to Pakistan. Authorities suspect that the boy had influenced and coached her in this plan via social media. However, the girl did not express a clear desire to return to her parents.

Etihad to expand India operations; plans to start new flights, says Salil Nath

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has plans to expand operations in India by starting new flights as well as increasing frequencies of existing ones, the airline’s India head Salil Nath told FE.

The airline’s expansion plan comes on the back of its unutilised weekly seat allocation to and from India under the bilateral air service agreement.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline still has 10,000 unutilised seats per week, as it only operates 40,000 of the 50,000 allocated seats.

“Etihad still has seats available and we are planning for future expansion via new flights to gateway destinations in India or additional frequencies on our present network,” Nath told FE.

At present, Etihad and Abu Dhabi Air Arabia joint venture operates 165 weekly flights to 10 gateways across India. Through the joint venture, the airline operates flights to Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram.

According to Nath, the airline’s network in India has increased by 54% in 2023.

Air India Plans To Start Flights To Los Angeles, Boston

New Delhi: Tata Group-owned Air India is planning to operate flights to more US cities, including Los Angeles, and is assessing various metrics, according to sources.

Currently, the airline operates non-stop flights to five American cities -- Washington, DC, New York, New Jersey, Chicago and San Francisco.

Los Angeles and Boston are among the cities being assessed as potential new destinations for long-haul flights from India, the sources told Press Trust of India.

At present, Air India has a code share partnership with United Airlines.

"We are planning to expand (our base) in the US and various cities are being assessed for potential new destinations. So, Boston is one of them, and Los Angeles too is among the cities that are being assessed," one of the sources said.

"We are weighing other metrics as well," the source added.

Starting a new destination entails examining a lot of factors, including fleet size, pilot strength and traffic volume on the route, according to aviation industry experts.

The source said current pilot strength, training of cabin crew and ground staff to be deployed at an airport at the new destination are among the factors that need to be considered.

A large number of Indian nationals or people of Indian-origin are living or working in the US, including students in various American universities. The US is also a tourism destination for many Indians.

Delhi consumer commission fines Kuwait Airways Rs 6 lakh for not allowing man on connecting flight

 --------------------------

frgn

New Delhi: The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Kuwait Airways to pay Rs 6 lakh to a man who was not allowed to board a connecting flight from Kuwait City to London in 2019 despite having a valid ticket for a round trip. The commission directed the airways and its country head to pay Rs 5 lakh for deficiency in services along with Rs 50,000 each for mental harassment and litigation expenses.

It observed that not allowing a person to board the plane was "nothing short of callous, tortuous and an oppressive act as it caused immense mental agony, physical discomfort, humiliation and emotional trauma".

A bench of Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, the commission president, was hearing a complaint claiming around Rs 55 lakh in compensation for deficiency in services by the airline.

Complainant Shameemuddin alleged that he was not allowed to board his connecting flight to London on reaching Kuwait City from Delhi on February 1, 2019. He was "illegally" sent back from the airport to New Delhi despite having all travel documents.

The bench, also comprising Judicial Member Pinki and General Member JP Agrawal, noted that, according to the airlines, Shameemuddin was offloaded from the flight and deported to India on account of "poor profile" by the Airline Liaison Officer (ALO) concerned, who represented the UK Embassy.

"It appears that by offering excuses and blatantly shifting the blame on the ALO, the opposite parties (airlines and its country head) are divorced from realities of life or the acute frustration and agony of the passenger who is denied boarding," the bench said in an order dated July 21.

Dubai-bound Indian tourists cancel flights, travel plans amidst devastating floods

frgn grl

Several Indian tourists who had been looking forward to enjoying a Dubai holiday have had to either cancel or postpone their trips as monsoon floods hit their home towns.

Torrential rains have battered a number of Indian states over the past few days, with floodwaters entering homes and inundating roads. The violent weather have reportedly impacted domestic and international travel, and service providers have had to deal with interruptions and cancellations due to several inaccessible transit routes.

Along with his family and friends, he had booked flights and accommodation through a travel agent — but all plans had to be given up due to non-stop rains.

“My friends and their families had to reach Delhi from Kanpur, Bhopal, and Surat. We faced train transport disruptions, and even buses were not hitting the roads. So it was difficult for us to move ahead with our plan,” said Kumar.

Kumar had previously been to Dubai on business trips, but for his family, the scheduled holiday would be their first time in the city.

"My daughter and wife are a bit disheartened. But I have promised them a vacation as soon as the situation normalises,” he said.

Nadeem Saifi, a tourist from New Delhi, said he was about to book tickets to Dubai for the third week of July but cancelled his travel plans.

"My wife and I were looking forward to our vacation in Dubai, but with the floods affecting my home town, we decided to postpone our trip. It’s disheartening to see the devastation caused by the floods in my city,” said Saifi.

“The situation in my neighbourhood is better now. Hopefully, we can plan our vacation in the coming days,” he added.

Similarly, a cloth manufacturer from Surat, Rajesh Sharma, planned a business trip on July 20, but due to heavy rain, he also had to cancel his visit.

Lounges: Encalm plans to expand beyond GMR airports in India & abroad too

New Delhi: Encalm Hospitality, which currently operates lounges only at GMR Group-run airports in Delhi, Hyderabad and Goa Mopa, plans to expand its wings abroad and in India. It has a partnership with Turkish company TAV Operation Services which operates 80 lounges in 19 countries. The GMR Group had in 2019 built a new terminal at Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport in Turkey and had exited the JV project about a decade back.

Since most airports seek a minimum of three years’ experience from prospective lounge operators, Encalm — which began operating in February 2022 — will use the tie-up with TAV to bid for lounges at more airports abroad and in India (non GMR) including the upcoming one at Greater Noida that is being built by Flughafen Zurich.

“Encalm Hospitality is backed by overseas funds. We currently have six lounges at Delhi Airport. Four of them are at T3 — two on international and one on domestic departure side and one at arrival for transit passengers. We have two lounges at Mopa, one for commercially important people (CIP) and one at domestic departure. We will build one on international side too at Mopa,” Encalm CEO Vikas Sharma said. The new facility built on Delhi Airport T3 international side that became operational earlier this month is India’s biggest airport lounge.

The company has major plans for Hyderabad airport. “We have one lounge each on domestic and international departure there. We will build a huge 17,000 square feet lounge there. The international side will get a much bigger lounge. We are building a 58-room hotel on transit side at Hyderabad,” he said.

A number of credit card holders are entitled to use airport lounges, apart from business and first class passengers. Long queues to enter lounges are a common sight at peak flight departure times. Airline officials say eligible credit card holders often outnumber premium class passengers in these queues. Delhi T3 international side was a major pain point till recently and now the new lounge is expected to improve things.

Bangladesh man held with Indian passport at Kochi airport

Kochi: Nedumbassery police have launched a probe after a Bangladesh national was intercepted at Kochi airport for attempting to travel abroad with an Indian passport. Officials with the Bureau of Immigration (BoI) on Monday morning intercepted Apurbo Roy, 22, while he was set to board the flight to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

After interrogating Roy for hours, the officers ascertained that he was a Bangladeshi citizen who managed to obtain fake Indian documents. He stayed at Agartala in Tripura before moving to Karnataka. “BoI officials have found a scanned copy of a Bangladeshi passport issued in Roy’s name from his phone. A copy of his birth certificate has also been recovered from his iPhone. He was also carrying an Aadhaar card, election ID card, two PAN cards and an ATM card of an Indian private bank issued from Karnataka,” a police officer said.

“His Bangladeshi passport reveals that he visited India numerous times. He visited Agartala and during the period, managed to obtain the fake documents. The Indian ID cards carried an address of Bheemarayana Gudi in the Yadgir district of Karnataka. A detailed probe is required into the incident as the matter has national security implications,” a police officer said.

Police have decided to launch a detailed probe into the incident, including the purpose of Roy’s attempted visit to Colombo. As assistance from the police in other states and national agencies may be required during the probe, the case might be referred to the Crime Branch.

Singapore Changi Recovery Boosted By Indian Traffic

Changi Airport’s monthly passenger figures have crossed 5 million for the first time in three years, as the hub reached 88% of pre-pandemic traffic levels.

The airport’s April-June 2023 results show that India continues to be a key market for Changi, maintaining its position within the top five markets for both passenger and cargo.

In June, Changi processed 5.12 million passengers. The airport also recorded 27,500 aircraft movements, which represents 88% of June 2019 levels.

In the second quarter, passenger throughput returned to 87% of pre-pandemic figures, with 14.6 million travelers. The largest inbound markets were Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Changi Airport Group (CAG) also says that travel to and from Northeast Asia is showing improvement—rising from around 50% of pre-COVID levels in January 2023 to 75% by June of this year.

Changi says its top five air cargo markets are Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, and the U.S. There does, however, appear to be some weakening in the sector, as the airport reports a slide of 10.8% year-on-year in airfreight throughput. The hub attributes this decline to “softening demand amid inflationary pressures.” India has remained in the top five air cargo markets for a second consecutive quarter.

Alliance Air commences daily flights between Chennai & Jaffna

Daily commercial flights between Chennai and Sri Lanka's Jaffna city have commenced with India's Alliance Air increasing the frequency from the earlier four-times-a-week service, a move that is set to further boost travel and trade between the two countries. The move to increase the frequency of flights between Chennai and the Tamil-dominated Jaffna city was announced earlier this month by Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia during the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) annual convention hosted in Colombo.

The daily commercial flights between Chennai and the Jaffna International Airport (JIA) in the north began operations on Sunday, aviation officials said.

Chief Airport Manager, Aruna Rajapaksa, confirmed the inaugural flight's arrival in Jaffna at 11:30 am, marking the initiation of daily flights along this route, the NewsFirst news portal reported on Sunday.

"Alliance Air is set to commence daily scheduled operations between Jaffna and Chennai, starting from 16th July 2023. Initially operating with their ATR72 aircraft, which can comfortably carry 70 passengers", a press release by Sri Lanka's Airport and Aviation Services said.

Alliance Air, which initially aimed for four flights per week starting from December 15, 2022, decided to upgrade the frequency of its operations to a daily flight service due to the growing demand for flights to the JIA.

It added that that the flights are designed to ensure timely and convenient travel options for passengers, with arrivals at 11:30 am and departures to Chennai at 12:30 pm.

Passenger Assaults Air India Official On Flight From Sydney To Delhi

A senior official at Air India was allegedly assaulted by an unruly passenger on a flight last week from Sydney to New Delhi. The airline has reportedly informed India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the passenger has since apologized for their behavior.

While the unruly traveler has not yet been disciplined officially, Air India indicated that it will pursue the passenger to the full extent of the law. Some officials close to the matter believe the situation set a poor example of zero tolerance regarding disruptive and abusive passengers.

According to the Hindustan Times, the incident happened on July 9th. Sandeep Verma, Air India's Head of Inflight Services, was traveling from Sydney to Delhi and was hit by a passenger from Delhi. A spokesperson for the carrier confirmed the incident in a statement.

“A passenger on board AI301 operating Sydney-Delhi on 9 July 2023 behaved in an unacceptable manner during flight, despite verbal and written warnings, causing distress to other passengers, which included one of our employees.”

An official who confirmed that Verma was an Air India employee said that "no action has been taken" towards the passenger who hit Verma, but the DGCA had been made aware of the incident. However, according to the Hindustan Times, the aviation regulator did not confirm whether it was informed of the assault.

Described as a frequent flyer to Australia, Verma booked a business class seat on the flight back to New Delhi, but he could not sit in his assigned seat because some seats were reportedly defunctive. As a result, he was downgraded to a seat in economy class.

"Verma accepted the downgrade and was then allotted seat 30C," an official said to the Hindustan Times. "He, however, later moved to row 25 since it was vacant. After shifting, Verma began correcting his co-passenger (who was freely walking around in the galley and also picked up a few alcohol bottles for no reason) and had a loud voice. This is when the passenger slapped Verma and twisted his head and abused him."

Five crew members were unable to contain the abusive passenger until a sixth crew member was called in to help get the situation under control. The passenger was reportedly given a verbal and written warning following the incident. Another official indicated that the crew did not use any restraining devices at the request of Verma, although the Hindustan Times reported that said devices are available on Australian flights. Additionally, no complaints were filed with the police.

United Airlines is making some big changes to its India route network.

It starts with dropping plans to serve Bangalore, a hotly anticipated route that was supposed to originally launch in spring 2021.

The airline has postponed the San Francisco-to-Bangalore route multiple times since it was announced in September 2020, but now the route is getting cut entirely before it even starts, Cirium schedules show.

A United spokesperson confirmed to TPG that the airline will abandon plans to serve Bangalore — a city some people call the Silicon Valley of India.

Along with dropping Bangalore, United will shift its existing routes to New Delhi.

Last winter season, the airline flew there from Chicago and Newark. Back in 2022, it served New Delhi from San Francisco as well.

Originally, United was planning three routes to New Delhi for this upcoming winter, but that plan changed over the weekend, according to Cirium schedules.

Instead of offering daily service from Chicago and Newark during the winter, United will consolidate to two daily flights from Newark.

The twice-daily flights from Newark to New Delhi will commence on Oct. 28 and run through March 29, 2024.

Nepal man smokes onboard Air India flight, abuses crew, smashes toilet door

A Nepali national, identified as Mahesh Singh Pandit, on flight AI 188, from Toronto to New Delhi (July 10) allegedly hurled abuses at the crew and damaged one of the lavatory doors onboard, reported ANI.

This passenger seemed determined to create chaos and discomfort for everyone in the 13-hour-long flight.

The trouble began when the passenger unleashed a torrent of verbal abuse on the cabin crew in the economy class cabin after swapping seats from 26E to 26F. The exact reason for the abuses is unknown. Sensing trouble, the pilot was promptly informed and gave the passenger a stern verbal warning. Surprisingly, he listened and kept calm for a while.

As if abusing the crew wasn't enough, this passenger had a brilliant idea post-lunch. The crew was startled when a smoke alarm went off soon after. Curious to investigate, a flight attendant opened the lavatory door and, lo and behold, found the same troublemaker inside, with a cigarette lighter and the distinct smell of smoke wafting through the air.

Caught red-handed smoking in the lavatory, the passenger didn't go down without a fight!

When the flight attendant tried to intervene, the passenger decided to play a game of push-and-shove to sprint back to his seat, even resorting to verbal abuse at the attendant. While trying to evade the scene, he broke the lavatory door.

Not content with harassing the crew, he even had the audacity to physically threaten other passengers who tried to tame him. Thankfully, 10 passengers and two cabin crew members teamed up to finally restrain the troublemaker, but not without a struggle. Cabin Supervisor, in the FIR statement, said, “When I opened the door in front of the passenger, he pushed me back and ran to his seat 26F. When I tried to stop him, he pushed me and abused me also. Later he broke the LAV door 3F-RC. Then I informed the captain immediately and as per the captain's instruction with the help of cabin crew Punit Sharma and the other four passengers we tried to restrain him as per SOP.”

Upon arrival In New Delhi, a case was registered with the Delhi Police under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt)/506 (criminal intimidation)/336 (endangering human life) of the Indian Penal Code and 22,23,25 Aircraft rules at IGI Police station.

Godrej Aerospace targets Airbus, Boeing suppliers as India jet orders soar

Mumbai: Godrej Aerospace is in talks to build aircraft parts for suppliers to Airbus and Boeing as airlines place record jet orders, a top executive at the Indian company said.

Air India and IndiGo between them have nearly 1,000 new planes on order, said Maneck Behramkamdin, associate vice president and business head at Godrej Aerospace, which means 2,000-2,500 engines would at some point need maintenance.

"With so many aircraft coming into India, Airbus and Boeing need to augment their supply chain. Tier two suppliers of Airbus and Boeing are now looking at India ... we are in talks with them," Behramkamdin told Reuters.

There are a lot of opportunities in supplying for the structure of the aircraft and there are also large titanium requirements, he said, adding there will also be demand for maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft parts.

Godrej Aerospace already exports some key components to engine makers General Electric (GE) and Rolls-Royce (RR.L), Behramkamdin said after a media tour of its plant in Mumbai.

The company expects its civil aviation business to clock revenues of 1 billion rupees ($12 million) in the current fiscal year, making up 35% of Godrej's total revenues, he said in an interview, adding that he expects this to grow to 50% next year.

IB71 Movie: Meet Indian Airlines Fokker F27 Plane That Was Hijacked From Kashmir In 1971

Vidyut Jamwal starrer IB71 movie has released on the Disney-Hotstar OTT platform in India. The film is based on the hijacking of the Indian Airlines Fokker F27 Friendship plane in 1971. Sankalp Reddy directed movie released in theatres on May 12, 2023 followed by the OTT release on July 7, 2023. The film spotlights a real-life secret mission undertaken by the Indian Intelligence Bureau during the 1971 war and has received a rave response from the social media users. While the IB played a big role in the incident, the backbone of the purported mission was a decommissioned Ganga plane.

The "Ganga" was a retired Fokker F27 Friendship plane operated by the Indian Airlines, which was a division of Air India Limited. The airline focused primarily on domestic routes, and certain international routes to Asia and Middle-East. In 2005, the airline was rebranded as "Indian" and was later merged with Air India. The airline inducted a variety of aircraft, including the Fokker F27, Boeing 737/ 320, Airbus A300, Vickers Viscounts among many other planes.

As per reports, the Fokker F27 Friendship plane was one of the oldest aircraft in the Indian Airlines fleet and was withdrawn from services a long back. However, it was re-inducted days before the hijacking, that led to the theories of involvement of Indian intelligence in getting the plane hijacked.

The incident took place on January 30, 1971, when an Indian Airlines domestic Fokker F27, also named "Ganga", was scheduled to fly from Srinagar Airport to the Jammu-Satwari Airport. The plane was hijacked by two Kashmiri separatists and was flown to the Lahore Airport in Pakistan, where the plane was later burnt.

While all the passengers and the crew were released, India retaliated by closing down the Indian airspace for the Pakistani aircraft. It is being said that the ban helped India win the 1971 Indo-Pak war that led to the formation of Bangladesh in December 1971, formerly called the East Pakistan, hence becoming a turning point in India-Pakistan relations.

The Fokker F27 Friendship is a turboprop airliner made by the Dutch aircraft manufacturer Fokker. Developed during the early 1950s, it was widely used by airlines across the globe for carrying passengers and was also one of the most successful European airliners of its era.

India's Labour Court rules against Lufthansa, gives relief for 17 cabin crew

The Central Government Industrial Tribunal-Cum-Labour Court has directed German premium carrier, Lufthansa Airlines, to reinstate 17 of its former employees whose services were terminated, along with 85 others, in early 2021. The court has deemed the action "illegal."

These 102 Indian employees were working as cabin crew with the carrier when they were sacked on February 2, 2021. Of the 102 staff, 31 had entered a settlement with the management, while the rest took different legal recourse.

According to a petition filed by some of the employees, the airline had only paid the cabin crew one month's salary, along with other contractual and statutory dues.

Lufthansa informed CNBC-TV18 that it is currently evaluating the Labour Court's order and has not yet determined its course of action.

The airline said, "We have taken note of the court's order. It is, however, too early to make a legal assessment of this order."

This specific order pertains to 25 of the 71 cabin crew who had individually approached the Labour Court. Eight of the 25 cabin crew members had settled their dispute with the management, while the remaining 17 continued the fight.

As per the order, Lufthansa has been instructed not only to reinstate these 17 cabin crew members but also to pay them their wages from the date of termination (February 2, 2021) to the date of the court's order within two months.

The court's 16-page order states that non-compliance by the airline would incur a 6 percent annual interest.

"The claimants are held entitled to reinstatement with full back wages and continuity of service from the date of termination of service. The Mgt no. 1 (management) is further directed to reinstate the complaints forthwith and pay them their last drawn salary and the arrears within two months from the date of publication of the award without interest, failing which the amount accrued shall carry interest at 6 percent per annum from the date of the challenged dismissal and till the amount are finally paid," the Labour Court's order stated.

In response to the petition, the Lufthansa management argued that termination was a last resort as the airline incurred significant losses during the COVID-19 pandemic and "struggled to maintain the India business."

The petitioners, however, claimed that the management had initially asked the cabin crew to go on Leave Without Pay for two years, but the staff requested at least half of their salaries during this period, which the management refused.

"The staff had asked the airline to pay at least half of their salaries during the LWP period which was not accepted by the management," according to the petitioners.

Consequently, the airline terminated the services of these employees.

'Treated like cattle': Indigo flyers recount harrowing experience after Istanbul-Mumbai flight cancellation

Indigo flyers who were scheduled to take the Istanbul-Mumbai flight on July 2 before it was cancelled abruptly have taken to social media to share accounts of their harrowing experience. From waiting for more than eight hours for an alternative flight to "being treated like cattle", several Indigo passengers have called their experience with the airline "poor".

Twitter user and film critic Sucharita was supposed to take a flight from Istanbul to Mumbai said that she found out her flight was cancelled hours before departure but the airline did not alert her. In fact, when she checked online, the flight status showed that the departure was scheduled on time.

She got to know about the cancellation when she called up Indigo customer care after coming across a tweet by another Indigo passenger of the same flight stating that it had been cancelled abruptly.

"Literally saw this tweet right now and decided to call Indigo to check my flight status for tonight (online it's scheduled on time), after I call I'm informed the flight is cancelled," Sucharita wrote. "How can you just up and cancel long-scheduled international flights without so much as an email? I'm supposed to leave for the airport in four hours."

Another flyer, Gunjan Savla, tweeted that she had to wait for more than eight hours for an update with no proper services being offered to the stranded passengers. "No update of cancelled flight 6E18 from Istanbul to Mumbai on 2nd July. Now more than 8 hours. Passengers are stranded with no proper arrangement of sitting, or eating. Such poor service," she tweeted.

Another passenger pointed out that while Indigo did not make any arrangements for accommodation in the interim period when he finally reached Mumbai after paying Rs 28,000 extra for his luggage, he realised that the bags never arrived.

India's airlines will try to counter Emirates' launch of Premium Economy to Mumbai, Bengaluru

Dubai: Will India’s airlines go the ‘Premium Economy’ route to pick up higher revenues and profit margins on their services to the UAE?

Airline industry sources say doing so would be the best option for India’s carriers on this high-frequency, high-demand route – and more so after Emirates announced it will do so from October in their flights to two Indian cities, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

"By targeting price-sensitive business passengers and comfort-seeking VFR (visiting friends and relatives) and leisure travelers, the Premium Economy has become a value-added product for airlines,” said Linus Bauer, founder and Managing Director at Dubai-based Bauer Aviation Advisory. ((It represents) a significant revenue stream and strategic mechanism to improve yields – especially on long-haul services."

Research by his firms shows that a Premium Economy seat's production and implementation cost is 1.6 times higher than that of an economy seat. "Yet on long-haul flights, it generates 2.3 times higher revenues than its production cost, giving it the highest marginal returns across all cabin classes," said Bauer.

But would adding a Premium Economy generate a similar sort of response on the relatively short-haul flights between UAE and India? And more so given that ticket rates on the sector consistently fly high?

"Bengaluru is an IT hub and Mumbai attracts a lot of corporate travelers,” said Husain Iqbal, General Manager – GSA at Sharaf Travel. “The product would experience some popularity even among point-to-point passengers."

As for Emirates, the Premium Economy rollout gives it significant advantages in tapping traffic from India on longer-haul flights transiting through Dubai.

Whether low-cost carriers would consider offering a Premium Economy service will likely depend on a careful analysis of market demand, operational feasibility, and potential profitability.

Among Indian carriers, Vistara and Air India offer Premium Economy services on select long-haul flights. Iqbal said that once Vistara’s merger with Air India completes next year, there is no telling what will happen to its existing services. Air India announced a Premium Economy product (in March this year), albeit limited to India-US routes.

Qatar Airways asked to pay Rs 7L as compensation

The Ernakulam Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has directed Qatar Airways to pay Rs 7 lakh as compensation to Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, who filed a complaint during his practice as a High Court lawyer that he was denied permission to board an international flight due to overbooking. The Commission also directed the airlines to pay the complainant Rs 50,000 towards the litigation cost.

The Commission led by its President D B Binu observed that denying boarding permission to passengers who hold valid boarding passes without assigning any reason whatsoever amounts to unfair trade practice and deficiency in service on the part of airlines.

According to the complainant, he along with a group of friends had planned a trip to Scotland on April 15, 2018, from the Cochin International Airport and booked tickets with Qatar Airways well in advance. When they reached Doha for a connecting flight to Edinburgh, the complainant was denied permission to board the plane due to overbooking despite having a boarding pass.

The complainant returned to Kochi on the next day, causing inconvenience and hardship to him.

Passengers inconvenienced as IndiGo abruptly cancels July 2 Istanbul-Mumbai flight

Hundreds of passengers of IndiGo flight 6E 18, who were to travel to Mumbai, were stranded in Istanbul in Turkey after the Gurugram-headquartered domestic carrier abruptly cancelled its flight on Sunday without attributing any reason.

IndiGo staff at Istanbul Airport did not provide any information to the passengers and only said that the airline’s next flight to Mumbai is after "21 hours,” an affected passenger, who was later shifted to IndiGo’s Istanbul-Delhi flight told CNBC-TV18.

The Boeing 777 aircraft, which IndiGo wet-leased from Turkish Airlines in February this year, is grounded at Istanbul Airport owing to a “fuelling imbalance” according to airline sources.

Several passengers in Mumbai were also affected as the same aircraft was scheduled to operate the Mumbai-Istanbul flight on July 3.

In a response to CNBC-TV18’s query, IndiGo said the flight was cancelled due to technical reasons.

“IndiGo flight 6E 18 operating Istanbul-Mumbai-Istanbul on 2nd/3rd July was cancelled due to a technical issue. Passengers had been offered alternate options. The aircraft is back in operation after necessary maintenance. We regret the inconvenience caused to passenger,” the airline said in a statement.

Air India cancels flight to Hong Kong due to 'suspected technical issue'

New Delhi/Mumbai: Taking off after a long delay for Hong Kong, an Air India flight carrying more than 200 passengers on Monday returned to the national capital due to a "suspected technical issue" and later, the flight was cancelled, according to officials.

Many of the passengers were accommodated on another carrier's flight, some were provided hotel accommodation in the national capital, and a full refund was also offered to people who preferred that option, an Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

An official in the know said the flight AI 314 was originally scheduled to operate to Hong Kong late on Sunday night, but due to some engineering issues in the Boeing 787 aircraft, the flight was rescheduled for Monday morning.

Finally, the flight took off at around 7.40 am but returned in less than an hour to the national capital.

There were more than 200 people on board, the official added.

"Flight AI 314, operating from Delhi to Hong Kong on July 3 air-returned to Delhi after a suspected technical issue," the airline's spokesperson said.

Pratt & Whitney and Indian start-up Awiros launch AI-based engine inspection tool

Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, has announced the launch of Percept – an advanced AI-based Aircraft Engine Analysis Tool. Percept is a computer vision product that operates on top of the Awiros Video Intelligence Operating System (OS). Its cloud-based interface allows users to capture images and videos of aircraft engines on their mobile devices and receive real-time responses on parts availability. This helps enable faster and cost-efficient turnaround of leased engine assets. Instead of an inspector having to examine an engine and check part-by-part, Percept automates this inspection, and reduces time taken by nearly 90%.

“The Percept tool helps reduce time and effort involved in the pre-and-post lease analysis of aircraft engines,” said O Sung Kwon, vice president, Customer Support, Pratt & Whitney. “We have been working with Awiros, an Indian Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence (AI) start-up for the past few years to mature this technology; we are excited to be shifting from technology development to now bringing an operational product to the market.”

“Building the Percept tool in collaboration with RTX has been one of the most exciting opportunities in the journey of Awiros as a startup. We are proud that Percept’s high-fidelity scanning of Pratt & Whitney engines with handheld mobiles phones, without any specialised hardware, is being commercially deployed in the aerospace industry.” said Vikram Gupta, founder and CEO, Awiros.

Awiros was selected as the winner of the RTX Innovation Challenge. The Innovation Challenge was launched in September 2019 with over 60 Indian and global startups in Computer Vision, AI, and Machine learning (ML) domains. The teams proposed solutions to optimise and automate aircraft engine inspections with reduced human interventions. Awiros’ idea was evaluated through 2020-21 and is expected to be launched commercially later this year.

Thai Airways plans to double fleet with focus on India: CEO

Thai Airways International, which sought bankruptcy protection in 2020 due to inefficient management and a sharp deterioration in its business because of COVID-19, is about to spread its wings wide again.

"We have to grow," said CEO Chai Eamsiri, who has nearly 40 years of experience in the airline industry, in an interview with Nikkei Asia. "Otherwise, we will not be able to compete with other international airlines." He added that the airline will double the size of its fleet, which had shrunk under its restructuring plan, as it enters a new phase of expansion.

Chai's focus is on India. "I think we do well on continental flights, like Europe and Australia, but we have to improve Western [routes] -- I mean India, Bangladesh and Pakistan," he said.

India, with the world's largest population, has always had strong cultural and economic ties with Thailand. The number of tourists from China, a major target for Thailand, fell sharply because of Beijing's zero-COVID policy. The public and private sectors in Thailand are now working together to attract visitors from India.

According to the Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports, about 990,000 Indians visited Thailand in 2022, second only to Thailand's neighbor Malaysia. Preliminary figures for January to May this year also place the country among the top sources of visitors, with 600,000 Indians coming to Thailand so far.

Chai revealed plans to expand Thai Airways' fleet, which had been cut to 65 planes as a restructuring measure, to 113 by 2027. The increase will be mainly in small, "narrow-body" aircraft, which are expected to be introduced in new markets, particularly India.

Several students stranded at Vancouver airport after Air India flight to Delhi cancelled

New Delhi: Around 20 to 25 students were left stranded after the cancellation of Air India flight AI 186 from Vancouver to Delhi on July 2.

Describing their ordeal, the University of British Columbia (UBC) students mentioned that the flight was initially scheduled to depart from Vancouver airport at around 10:15 a.m. on July 2 but was rescheduled twice and eventually cancelled.

One of the students, speaking anonymously, stated, "On July 1, around 9 p.m., we received an email from Air India informing us of a five-hour delay, and the new departure time was set for 2:45 p.m. However, when we arrived at the airport, we discovered that the flight had been delayed for an additional hour."

"We were waiting at the closed boarding gate at the new departure time of 3:45 p.m.," she continued. "But a fellow passenger informed us around 3:40 p.m that the flight had been cancelled, and there was no official announcement."

The students, along with other passengers, subsequently reached out to Air India ground staff. "They (ground staff) provided us with an email address and instructed us to send our expense receipts to the airport for reimbursement," said another student.

"The ground staff also assured us that Air India would refund our ticket costs and other expenses. However, when we requested written confirmation, the staff refused, stating that they could only give oral assurances as there was no guarantee," she said, adding that they don’t know if their ticket amount will be refunded or not.

More should be done to remember the victims of Air India bombing

Victims of Air Indian bombing were remembered on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism. Flags at various federal, provincial and municipal governments offices across Canada were flown at half-mast.

The 38th annual memorial for the 331 victims including 82 children of the terrorist bombings of the Air India flight from Canada was held on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 6:30 p.m., at the Air India Memorial in Stanley Park’s Ceperley Playground. The annual memorials of this tragedy are organized by family members of the victims.

“This memorial not only remembers the 329 victims including 82 children of this terrible terrorist bombing, but all their family members and 2 baggage handlers in Narita, Japan who died almost at the same time as a second terrorist bomb bound for another Air India flight exploded prematurely,” said former Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave S. Hayer.

“These horrendous acts live on in the memories of all family members of the victims and these annual memorial ceremonies continue to remind us all, that terrorism has no place in a civilized world and that it must be stamped out at all costs,” Hayer said.

During Hayer’s 12 years from 2001 – 2013 as an MLA, he spoke often in the BC Legislature about the Air India bombing disaster, strengthening the rights of victims and against terrorism.

Mr. Major Sidhu’s sister, nephew and niece were killed on Air India Flight 182 on June 23, 1985.

The Air India Memorial in Ceperley Park was unveiled in 2007 to commemorate the worst aviation tragedies in Canadian history, and to stand as a monument against terrorism.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a statement said, “Thirty-eight years ago today, en route from Canada to the United Kingdom, a bomb exploded on Air India Flight 182 – a terrorist attack that shook our country to its core. This hateful act – the deadliest terrorist attack in Canadian history – killed all 329 people on board, including 280 Canadians, and forever altered the lives of their families and loved ones who continue to live with the pain of their absence every day.

“Terrorism seeks to instill fear, division, and hatred within our communities. We can never allow the actions of a few to overshadow the values of peace, tolerance, and diversity that define our society and unite us as Canadians.

“Today offers an opportunity to reflect on how we can continue to defend peace and security and promote human rights here at home and around the world. It is also an opportunity to express our profound gratitude to the first responders, members of the Canadian Armed Forces, members of law enforcement agencies, and the countless others who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe,” he said.

‘Travelled 96 Hours’: US Flight Disruption Haunts Indian Travellers’ Summer Plans

New Delhi: US airports are dealing with widespread flight delays this week due to thunderstorms in the Northeast. The prolonged delays, lasting several hours, have posed a significant challenge for airlines as they struggle with a surge in passenger numbers, while also raising concerns for the upcoming July 4 holiday.

The situation has also created severe difficulties for passengers travelling to India.

Samrat Ghosh experienced the most harrowing time this week as he travelled for 96 hours to reach his home country. What made it, even more, disheartening for him was that he was accompanied by his parents. The family is visiting India after an absence of nearly five years.

According to Ghosh, they encountered multiple delays caused by the thunderstorms, which also raised concerns for the family as they had a connecting flight to Doha.

“Our journey began with a 20-minute delay in boarding the American Airlines flight from Charlotte to New York (JFK) due to thunderstorms. The flight itself took off 40 minutes late, and upon reaching JFK, we faced another hour’s delay in landing due to bad weather and low visibility. This delay became a cause for concern as we had a connecting flight to Doha in just 30 minutes,” Livemint quoted Ghosh as saying.

Despite their concerns, the family members managed to reach the gate on time, only to realize that they hadn’t been properly checked in at Charlotte, and their seats had been assigned to other passengers.

“Frustrated, we were directed to American guest services, where we had to go back and forth between counters, eventually finding out that the next available flight to Doha was in two days, he added.
