Ranchi villagers hold ‘AAI officials’ hostage for asking them to vacate land for airport expansion

Ranchi: Hethu villagers held a section of people hostage who had entered their village terming the former ‘encroachers’ and asked them to leave their land for Birsa Munda Airport expansion within 24 hours.

The development took place in Hethu village adjacent to the airport under Namkum circle of Ranchi.

A local resident informed this correspondent sharing a video. He said those who had turned up for the announcement claimed themselves as Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials and said they are taking action on the direction of the Ranchi deputy commissioner.

“The action angered the villagers as the step was in violation of the Jharkhand High Court order given on April 24 in this matter. The high court had directed the Namkum circle officer to conclude the proceedings initiated after issuance of an encroachment notice on December 7 last year to the villagers having their land in the periphery of the Birsa Munda Airport. A single bench of Justice Anubha Rawat Choudhary gave the direction on April 24 after a section of villagers knocked the high court door getting demolition threat from the district administration intended to handover the land to the Airport Authority of India for the expansion of the Birsa Munda Airport. Though the proceeding is yet to be concluded, the authorities took up the step to displace us,” the villager said.

“It is wrong on the part of the district administration to give demolition threat without concluding the proceedings initiated after issuing an encroachment notice. Terming landowners as encroachers is wrong,” the villager said.

BCAS Suggests Steps To Avert Congestion At Airports During Peak Travel Periods

To avert possible congestion at airports amid rising passenger traffic, regulator BCAS has suggested that new flight operations at airports should be linked to their passenger handling capacities at security check points, according to a senior official.

The move also comes against the backdrop of congestion witnessed at Delhi airport late last year that had resulted in long queues and waiting hours for passengers.

As domestic air passenger traffic crosses the pre-pandemic level, the civil aviation ministry has been taking various measures to ensure that there is no congestion at airports.

Capacity assessment is being done by the airports on the processing time, queuing time, passenger touch points and demand forecast.

The senior official told PTI that it needs to be ensured that airports have adequate capacity to handle rising air passenger traffic and in this regard, it has been suggested that new flights at airports should be linked to their passenger handling capacities at security checkpoints.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is conducting an assessment of passenger handling capacity at airports as part of the civil aviation ministry's efforts to ensure there is no congestion at airports during peak travel periods, the official added.

Autistic boy denied boarding over 'threat' at Bengaluru airport

Bengaluru: In a shocking incident at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here, a 15-year-old autistic boy was initially denied boarding by the SriLankan Airlines ground staff who claimed he could be a threat to the pilots and fellow passengers.

However, his mother fought against the bizarre decision of the airlines crew, who finally allowed him to board the flight after a two-hour ordeal.

The crew members, though, allegedly kept following the teenager till the plane in an intimidating manner. The mother has lodged a complaint with the airline and Bengaluru airport seeking action against the inconsiderate crew.

It was supposed to be a sweet beginning of a memorable holiday to the Maldives for the Menons and their two teenage sons from Babusapalya. They reached KIA on the evening of May 16 to board the SriLankan Airlines flight UL 174 to Colombo en route to Male. But things took a sour turn around 12.30am on May 17 when the mother, father and sons were waiting to check-in their luggage for the flight.

"Two male ground staffers of SriLankan Airlines came up to us and asked questions about our 15-year-old younger son, who is autistic and communicates using a mobile app. Shockingly, they began to say that he would be a threat to the pilots and fellow passengers on the plane if allowed to board. My son was hearing all this and stood scared holding our hands," recalled the boy's mother, who was stunned by the thoughtless approach the crew was taking towards an autistic passenger.

While the family showed the SriLankan Airlines duo at KIA the boy's unique disability ID (UDID) card issued by the government of India, they demanded to see a certificate of the boy's treating doctor that he could travel by flight. "I had to explain to them that autism is not a disease and there is no need for a doctor to treat him, let alone authenticate him to fly. He is a well-travelled boy and his last trip was to Dubai, and he has never been harassed over his condition," the mother, who is a special educator and psychologist, said.

With the airline crew holding up the autistic teen and the family by forcing them out of the check-in line, the parents argued it was illegal to deny boarding to the boy over his condition. However, they were reprimanded by the crew. "Our questions soon had the crew turn their conversation to threats of denying boarding to all of us. My teenage son was watching all this unfold and we kept calm to ensure he did not get upset," the mother said.

Taking note of the situation, officials of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), which operates KIA, intervened. They informed the airline crew the family had informed them about their travel with a child with special needs two days in advance, and the information was duly shared with the airline's office.

"Following this, they took a copy of his UDID card and contacted the airline higher-ups. Finally, after two hours, we got clearance for my son to fly and the information on the clearance was given to us by the BIAL staff, who were extremely supportive in the situation," said the Bengalurean.

But the family's ordeal didn't end even then as two SriLankan Airlines crew allegedly tailed the teen from a distance as the group cleared pre-departure security checks and boarded the flight.

Working Sundays, 251,000 man-hours and more! Mangaluru International Airport recarpets 2.45 km runway in 75 days

Mangaluru International Airport reached a significant milestone on May 28, as it successfully completed the recarpeting of its 2.45-kilometre-long runway. This remarkable project, aimed at meeting aviation safety regulations, distinguished itself by employing a flexible overlay of asphalt on a rigid runway — first of its kind in India. The airport had begun preliminary survey work for the project on January 27 and completed it within a span of 75 working days, commencing from March 10.

As the second busiest airport in Karnataka, Mangaluru International Airport witnesses approximately 36 aircraft movements each day. To ensure minimal disruption to scheduled flights, the airport implemented an 8.5-hour NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) from 9:30 am to 6 pm daily for the recarpeting process. Throughout the project’s duration of 75 days and 529 hours, the runway remained open for an average of 18 domestic and international flights per day during the remaining 14.5 hours.

Demonstrating their commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and minimising passenger inconvenience, the airport extended the NOTAM to include Sundays starting from March 19. This decision enabled the completion of the project within the mentioned hours, involving a remarkable 251,000 man-hours over the course of 75 working days — five days ahead of the initial estimate of 80 days, spanning from March 10 to May 28. The project required 81,696 tonnes of asphalt, equivalent to laying 82 km of road, employing 80 advanced pieces of equipment.

Dubai-Mangaluru flight delayed by over 10 hours, passengers face tough time

Mangaluru: Passengers of Mangaluru-bound Air India Express flight IX 814, which was scheduled to take off from Dubai at 2.25 am on Sunday, had a harrowing experience as the flight was delayed by more than 10 hours. The airline officials cited technical reasons for the inordinate delay. However, the passengers complained that they were not informed about the delay in departure by the airline, which caused them much inconvenience.

A tweet posted by @pritham_1974 read: “Flight from mangalore Dxb IX 814 delayed by 9.30 hours, No SMS nor a call from Airlines. Airport staff informed passengers after one hour waiting for check in, Poor coordination from the airline staff at the airport .. not expected from TATA group #AirIndia #ratantata #dgca.”

A tweet from handle @Nenmeli said, “@ DrSJaishankar @PMOIndia Around 185 Airindia express IX814 passengers to IXE are stuck and suffering in DXB terminal 2 since last night due to flight delay. Now at 6.10AM at DXB, we don’t know when the flight will depart. Please do the needful urgently.”

In another tweet, @Nenmeli replied to TOI that after more than 10 hours of delay, passengers were allowed to check in around 9.30 am on Sunday. “Also, the airlines arranged food for all of us,” the tweet said.

An AIE official at Mangaluru International Airport said that the flight was delayed in Dubai due to technical reasons and is expected to land at MIA around 6.45pm.

Sources said that the major rehabilitation/recarpeting work under way at Mangaluru Airport runway 06/24, is another cause for the delay since flights cannot land here anytime between 9.30am to 6pm, except Sunday and national holidays. The works which started on January 27 will continue till the end of this month.

Delhi's IGI Airport may soon have two international terminals

New Delhi: The capital’s IGI Airport may soon have two international terminals. IndiGo, India’s largest airline by domestic market share, has asked Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) to create facilities to handle international traffic at the upcoming expanded Terminal 1 — which has, so far, been all-domestic.

At present, IndiGo flies out of all the three terminals in Delhi (T1, 2 & 3) and has, for a long time, been keen on having all its flights from one place for operational efficiency and passenger comfort.

Comments were sought from IndiGo on this issue and awaited till the time of going to press. “We now fly domestic from all three terminals in Delhi,” the airline's website says. All international flights at IGIA are currently from T3.

T1 expansion work is expected to get completed by this September. “The expansion was planned as an all-domestic terminal. During Covid, work on T1 was slowed down in 2020 and 2021. Subsequently, the rebound in air travel has been beyond what one had anticipated. So, T1 work will be completed as per the origin plan to avoid any delay, given the rise in traffic and, then, clearance will be sought from multiple government agencies concerned to have facilities for international traffic at T1,” a source said.

Sources say it is a matter of time before T1 handles both domestic and international flights, subject to clearances for the latter from varied government agencies.“Eventually, T3 will be for Tata Group airlines (Air India-Vistara and AI Express-AirAsia India combines) and foreign carriers. T1 will handle flights of low-cost carriers, including IndiGo. T2 will handle domestic flights of full-service carriers,” the source said.

In the absence of an automated people mover like an air train, transiting between T1, on one side, and T3/2, on the other, is a major pain point for passengers. It is not uncommon for passengers to reach the wrong terminal and, then, rush to the designated one in time to catch their flight. Having designated terminals, instead of an airline operating from multiple terminals, could help minimise this confusion.

India is on a hitherto unseen airport expansion. But is it enough?

It’s not a garden in a terminal; it’s a terminal in a garden!” That is how Hari Marar, managing director & CEO of Bengaluru International Airport, refers to its recently launched Terminal 2. ‘Garden terminal’ is a departure from the steel-and-glass template for most global airports, with a nature theme filling up the terminal complex with six lakh plants and 10,000 sq.ft of green walls, and the use of sustainable materials like bamboo and locally-sourced granite in construction. Bengaluru T2 was among the nine buildings CNN listed as those that will “shape the world in 2023”.

In fact, it is already happening. A month ago, walking up this garden path, Foxconn chief Young Liu was so impressed that the contract manufacturer for Apple’s iPhone promptly agreed to build a manufacturing facility near the airport investing Rs8,000 crore. It will create 50,000 jobs.

“It was great to note the infrastructure readiness… and the availability of social infrastructure around the plot earmarked for the project,” Liu wrote later to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. “The efficiency of cargo handling at the airport does have a significant bearing on our operations and metrics, as we rely on air freight for our multiple products to a considerable extent.”

Bengaluru T2 is just one of the poster boys of India’s aviation boom, as the country taxies for take off into becoming the world’s biggest domestic aviation market, as Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia mentioned in an interview with THE WEEK a while ago. “Look at the growth potential,” he said. “You have just 14 crore flyers out of a population of 140 crore. Which other aviation market has the potential that India has? I am looking at 40 crore air travellers by 2027.”

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, 3.75 crore passengers travelled on domestic flights in just three months from January to March this year―a growth of 21 per cent. It is usually a lean season, compared with summer holidays in May and June or the festive season from October to December. In fact, the DGCA estimates an air passenger growth of 52 per cent this year.

All those passengers, and the many aircraft that carriers have ordered to fly them, also need airports and runways. And that is an area that has not kept pace with the spike.

“Big aircraft orders demonstrate the confidence in the India aviation story. But they also need bases to park the aircraft,” said Sidharath Kapur, who was earlier head of the airports divisions of Adani and GMR, two of the biggest private airport operators in India. “Airlines can expand quickly―order new planes or lease to increase capacity. But airports cannot do that. Airport expansion takes years, so airports need to be planned well in advance.”

Despite the number of airports in the country doubling from 74 in 2014 to 141 last year, the real McCoy will be the blitzkrieg in this area in the months to come. A total of Rs98,000 crore have been earmarked for airport expansion across the country over the next two years; a third of it by the state-run Airports Authority of India itself. In addition to the much-talked about new airports adjoining Delhi and Mumbai, a clutch of other airports, some new and some upgraded, are getting ready. Additionally, the government also plans to develop 100 airports by next year under the UDAN regional connectivity scheme.

Rapid exit and link taxiways opened at Chennai airport

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has commissioned a rapid exit taxiway and a link taxiway that will reduce peak hour congestion at Chennai airport on Thursday. These will help the airport handle more flights and reduce the time taken by a flight to move out of the runway after landing.

The taxiways have been opened at a time when the airport’s peak hour flight handling capacity is expected to go up from 36 flights per hour to 45 flights per hour as passenger and aircraft movement has crossed pre-Covid levels.

The new facility would cut the runway occupancy time for arriving flights on the main runway and increase overall runway throughput, said a statement.

With a length of 400 metre and a width of 23 metre, this taxiway is strategically located at a distance of 1,831 metre from the threshold (beginning of landing portion of the runway) of runway 07 connecting to another taxiway – B.

In addition to the new rapid exit taxiway, the authorities also commissioned a 150.93-metre-long link taxiway which provides flights an additional entry and exit to the main apron.

Soon, British Airways to launch Kochi flights

Kochi: Flying between Kerala and the United Kingdom is set to become hassle-free and smooth with the British Airways likely to launch a direct flight service between London and Kochi. Sources said that Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) has already held discussions with British Airways, and if everything goes as planned, the service is expected to begin in three months.

Though Cial officially refused to confirm the plan, top sources said talks are progressing, and the airline company is interested in the scheduled sector. It is also learnt that the airline has assessed the baggage handling and passenger amenities at the Kochi airport.

“European connectivity has been a long-time demand of expats; increasing more direct services to European destinations has been a priority for Cial too. Cial officials have met with British Airways officials during the Routes World Conference 2022 held in Las Vegas and have shared the airport profile and facilities with them. Since then, there have been multiple rounds of positive discussions about a direct flight,” said a source.

The proposed service will be a big relief for Keralites in the UK, considering their huge numbers there. Malayali associations in the UK have always demanded more direct flights between London and Kerala.

56-yr old first-time flyer smokes beedi on Akasa flight, gets caught at Bengaluru airport

A 56-year-old first-time flyer on Tuesday was arrested at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) for smoking beedi mid-air on an Akasa Air Ahmedabad-Bengaluru flight. The man, identified as Praveen Kumar, was charged with putting the lives of fellow passengers in danger.  The Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed airline’s duty manager filed a complaint with the airport police after the flight’s landing at the airport.

Kumar hails from Rajasthan’s Marwar and had boarded the flight from Ahmedabad. Crew members caught him smoking inside the toilet. Kumar was then sent to Bengaluru central jail. He claimed that this was his first flight ever and that he did not know about the airlines’ strict no-smoking policy, Times of India reported.

The accused reportedly told the police: “I regularly travel by train and smoke inside the toilet. Thinking I could do the same here, I decided to smoke a beedi”. A senior police official told the publication that cigarettes get detected easily and failing to do so indicates a serious lapse.

The officer further said that Kumar was flying alongside an aged person, who was flying to Bengaluru to participate in the post-death rituals of a family relative. The accused has to spend at least one week in judicial custody once arrested, as per the official.

Commenting on the incident, an Akasa Air spokesperson said that the crew followed the required safety protocols and handed over the passenger to the local police. The Akasa Air spokesperson further said that airline is assisting authorities with their investigation into the matter.

Kannur airport expansion in limbo for 8 years, 172 families wait for rehabilitation

In 2015, it was decided by the Kerala state government that the Kannur International Airport runway would be extended from 3,050 m to 4,000 m in order to make it to the standards of an international airport. At the time, the government had identified 248 acres for acquisition – specifically the land in wards no 12 and 13 i.e. Keezhallur North and Kanad. Eight years on, expansion plans are yet to take off.

According to Onmanorama, these wards have 172 houses but the state government has not acquired the land from the owners nor is it allowing them to build new houses or sell the land. It reported that come May 22, the action committee of these 172 landowners will picket the office of Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA). Government agency KINFRA is in charge of the land acquisition and the rehabilitation of the 172 families.

Two years ago KINFRA rented houses for 12 families and moved them as their land had got eroded from the water running off the runway. However, KINFRA reportedly stopped paying their rent after six months.

As per the report, KINFRA officials stated that 36 acres at Chalode, 4 km from Kanad, had been identified to rehabilitate these families. Each family that would lose their house would get 10 cents of land to build a new one and the land would be compensated at twice its valued amount. However, land for that is yet to be purchased.

All for a phone: Man uses forged Vistara ticket to enter Mumbai airport, gets arrested

A man was arrested for using a fake ticket to enter the Mumbai airport on May 14, according to a Times of India report. The accused, a 37-year-old man named Noor Shaikh, had reportedly lost a mobile phone inside the airport last week while travelling from Delhi to Mumbai. He came up with the elaborate ruse to search for the device.

Shaikh used his laptop to edit an old e-ticket, which he then used to gain entry to the Mumbai airport. He managed to clear the Central Industrial Security Force (CSIF) security check point by showing them the forged e-ticket for a Mumbai-Delhi flight on his phone. The forgery came to light only when he tried to use the same ticket to check in.

Officials at the airline check in counter alerted CISF personnel about the fake ticket.

"Shaikh's family said he is depressed after losing his job recently and has been doing such acts without knowing knowing the consequences. He was caught after he forged the old Mumbai-Delhi ticket of Vistara Airlines using a computer software," said a police officer of Sahar police station.

"The accused had travelled on a flight from Mumbai to Delhi recently and he lost his phone at the airport. He decided to make the fake ticket and enter the airport to check the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the arrival area to look for his lost mobile. On a fake ticket, the passenger can go up to the security check where tickets are scanned," said an officer, according to Times of India.

Drenched passenger sues CIAL after catching fever, to get Rs 16,000 in damages

Kochi: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC), Ernakulam, has ordered Cochin International Airport Ltd to pay a passenger compensation of Rs 16,000 for not providing rain shelter. CIAL has to pay compensation to the complainant, T G N Kumar, a native of Vennala, who sued the airport company way back in 2015.
Kumar moved the consumer forum in June 2015, alleging that he caught a fever after he had to fly from Cochin airport to New Delhi all drenched as there was no rain shelter facility while boarding the flight. Kumar had sought compensation of Rs 1 lakh from the airport. He had also levelled serious allegations regarding the deficiency of service at the airport and the insufficiency of CISF personnel there.
The compensation order was issued by DCDRC president D B Binu and members V Ramachandran and Sreevidhia T N. The complainant, who claimed to be a frequent flyer, alleged that he could not catch connecting flights on several occasions due to delays in departure from CIAL owing to a lack of CISF personnel who manage the security checks.
He said he had lost lakhs due to the poor management of the airport but claimed only Rs 1 lakh for the said instance. The consumer forum, in its verdict dated April 19, 2023, said the complainant failed to provide evidence for his claim of Rs 1 lakh towards the deficiency of services at the airport. However, the forum found CIAL guilty of not providing a boarding ladder with a rain canopy or cover. The forum stated that the airport authorities failed to prove their claim that it was up to airline companies to provide passengers with such facilities.

Drunk Passenger Refuses To Pay Alcohol Bill, Creates Ruckus At Kolkata Airport

The premises of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata witnessed chaos on Friday night after a drunken passenger created a ruckus there. The passenger, Pratul Ghosh was first detained by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel deputed for airport security and later handed over to the local Kolkata Airport Police Station. It is learnt that on Friday night Ghosh, supposed to fly to Mumbai by an IndiGo flight arrived at the Kolkata Airport.

On arrival well in advance before the boarding process to start, he went to a bar within the airport premises and consumed alcohol. However, the trouble started after the bar authorities presented a bill of Rs 3,750 against the alcoholic beverages consumed by Ghosh. He tried to escape from the bar without paying the bills.

On being stopped by the employees of the bar, he refused to pay the amount and started quarreling with the staff. He reportedly hurled abuse towards the staff, who prevented him from escaping without paying the bill.

Soon the CISF staff deputed for airport security reached there and initially they tried to reach an amicable solution by trying to convince Ghosh to pay the billed amount. However, he refused to do that and instead came out with weird reasons for not paying the bills.

Besides claiming that he neither had any cash or credit card to pay the bill, Ghosh also claimed that he had misplaced the contact number of all his family members and friends who could pay the bill for him.

Thereafter, the CISF personnel first detained him and then handed him over to the local police. This is the second time during the current week that Kolkata Airport came into the news because of the nuisance of drunken passengers.

Jaipur airport to handle 2,300 MT cargo/month

Jaipur: The Jaipur International Airport will soon start operating a domestic cargo unit, adjacent to the Terminal 1 building, a senior official of the airport administration said on Thursday. The cargo unit spans an area of 550 sq/m and is capable of handling 2,300 metric tonnes of cargo monthly, the official said.

The airport is also planning to start an international cargo unit by the end of the year. “We will start domestic inbound and outbound cargo unit, adjacent to the terminal building of the airport. The new cargo terminal is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities. We plan to engage with various trade-related stakeholders and help them understand how the new facilities can enable safe and secure movement of cargo to regional and national aviation cargo hubs,” said the official.

Officials said the airport administration has received all necessary permissions and approvals from state and union regulatory agencies to start the cargo operations.

The tariff and other rate cards for the cargo operations are determined by the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority of India, said officials.

“The new domestic cargo unit has ample parking space and a separate entry gate. It boasts of several features that aid in effective handling of inbound and outbound cargo. The facility includes three truck bays (two for outbound and one for inbound cargo), three dock levellers, and two forklifts,” said the official spokesperson for the airport.

Officials said the new cargo unit includes separate office spaces for airlines, related staff, and a centralized AC system. The facility has a strong room, cold storage, and dangerous goods storage area, which meet the norms prescribed by aviation cargo regulators. Pass issuance and frisking booths are also available at the entrance gate, and the facility is being monitored by security agencies round the clock, said the spokesperson.

Despite talks, no movement on 5G services at airports

Seven months since Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel started rolling out 5G in India, the impasse over providing the services in and around airports continues despite several meetings between stakeholders.

So far, no timelines have been specified around restoration of 5G and when the altimeters in aeroplanes can be changed, which, telcos say, puts them in a tricky situation as they can’t offer 5G in areas where they are witnessing massive demand.

Officials aware of the details told ET that at the latest meeting held on April 19, representatives from aircraft makers Boeing and Airbus said altimeters must be changed for a permanent solution around 5G connectivity at airports. And for this, a decision needs to be taken by airlines and India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) around purchase orders.

The aircraft manufacturers said they would be able to provide altimeters to countries outside of the US only after December 2023, according to an official present at the meeting.

The DGCA has yet to provide any timelines for retrofitting of altimeters. The aviation regulator, in turn, is believed to have said at the meeting that timelines can be decided only once there is clarity on the availability of the modified altimeters for the Indian fleet, officials said.

The April 19 meeting was attended by representatives of Boeing, Airbus, Airtel, Jio and officials from the DGCA and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

“Boeing has been working with suppliers, regulators, the airlines and telecom companies to ensure long-term stability and help mitigate operational restrictions where possible in an effort to promote the safe co-existence of aviation and 5G environments,” a spokesperson for Boeing India said.

As per preliminary estimates, the number of Boeing aircraft requiring retrofit in India is around 500, while it is roughly 300 for Airbus. However, the Indian carriers need to place orders soon to the two aircraft makers as there are supply chain constraints and carriers in other countries including Brazil and Canada are vying to get the altimeters at the earliest, say industry executives.

'Go First' crisis hits Kannur International Airport; Here's How

Kannur: Since cash-strapped Go First Airline stopped operating, just a few services are now available from Kannur Airport. With this, Kannur has become an airport that has services by only two airlines.

'Go First' conducted eight daily services to Kannur from Gulf Nations. Now only Air India Express and IndiGo are operating services at the Kannur International Airport. However, they serve only domestic services.

Go First operated four times a week from Kannur to Muscat, three times to Kuwait, and twice to Dammam. Only Go First operated flights from Kannur to Kuwait and Dammam.

Along with Go First, Air India also operated the service, but it was eventually discontinued because foreign airlines were not permitted to run it. As Kannur is not a metro city, the Centre refused to give foreign airlines permission to operate there.

Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) directed crisis-hit Go First to cease selling tickets with immediate effect until further instructions. The DGCA asked the airline to "stop booking & sale of tickets directly/indirectly, with immediate effect until further orders". The aviation regulator also issued show cause notice to the airline for their failure to continue operations in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner.

“In view of the sudden cancellation of flights and initiation of the corporate insolvency resolution process under Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) by Go Airlines (India) Limited (Go First), DGCA has issued a show cause notice to Go First under the relevant provisions of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, for their failure to continue the operation of the service in a safe, efficient and reliable manner,” said a senior DGCA official.

SriLankan Airlines to be given to India’s TATA?

The heads of the government are discussing the possibility of transferring SriLankan Airlines, which has recorded a net profit of USD 3 million in the financial year 2022-23, to India’s ‘TATA Company’.

TATA, one of India’s largest business groups, already operates several airlines including Air India.

The government said that SriLankan Airlines is at the forefront of loss-making companies in Sri Lanka, and therefore it should be restructured.

Meanwhile, Aviation Voice has reported that SriLankan made a net profit of USD 3 million in the 2022-23 financial year for the first time after Emirates exited from management in 2008.

During a Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) meeting held recently, the Srilankan Airlines said that it has earned USD 104 million as operating profit. As a result, it has earned a net profit of USD 3 million once the interest expenses of USD 101 million are excluded.

However, the airline recorded a loss of Rs.69 billion mainly due to the exchange losses (exchange loss of Rs.63 billion), but this is said to be a decrease from the loss of Rs.163 billion recorded in the year 2021-22.

IndiGo, BIAL to pay Rs12 lakh to kin of deceased

BengaluruL Holding both IndiGo Airlines and Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) responsible for the death of a passenger for allegedly refusing to provide a wheelchair and also barring him from check-out for treatment after he complained of feeling tired during the check-in process, the Consumer Commission directed them to pay Rs 12 lakh to the family members along with Rs 10,000 litigation cost.

The commission partly allowed the complaint filed by the deceased Chandra Shetty K’s wife Sumathi Shetty and daughter Deekshitha Shetty C. “Nobody can compensate for the loss of a life with money. But the compensation can be of little help for the family members. Therefore, Rs 12 lakh is fair and just,” said the commission comprising president M Shobha and member K Anita Shivakumar.

The complainants said that they had requested and screamed for help but neither the airline nor BIAL extended any support, which led to the loss of a golden hour.

Instead of showing concern, the BIAL had raised an objection that the complainants were not consumers, the commission said, adding this indicates an inhumane attitude towards its consumers.

Chandra Shetty, 60, along with his wife and daughter were planning to travel to Mangaluru on an IndiGo flight on November 19, 2021, at 2.45 pm. Both the airlines and the BIAL completed the check-in procedure, during which Shetty began feeling tired.

When his wife and daughter requested for a wheelchair to take him to a hospital, they were asked to wait. For one-and-a-half-hour, they were not given anything. Taken to the emergency care at the airport, the complainants were asked to shift him to a hospital on the airport premises where he was declared brought dead at 4.45 pm.

IndiGo did not file its response before the commission. Denying the allegations, BIAL said the complainants had not requested a wheelchair. When Shetty was not responding to treatment, a buggy was brought in and medical attention was given, the BIAL said.

Indian Airports Beat Japan In Punctuality, Hyderabad Declared Best In The World

In a major boost to the Indian aviation industry, the GMR-run Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad has been adjudged the airport with best On Time Performance globally. An Indian airport, beating Japanese airports in punctuality is a big news for the India's infrastructure push. Moreso, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport is also among the top ranked airports globally, as per Aviation analytics firm Cirium, in terms of On Time Performance in March 2023. Cirium reviewed a total number of 3 million flights for every airport globally, and categorizes those airports into four types.

The four types are based mainly on seat numbers and are listed as: 1) Global Airport (25-40 million seats and serve at least three regions), 2) Large Airport (25-40 million seats), 3) Medium Airport (15-25 million seats) and 4) Small Airport (5-15 million seats). This is not the first time Indian airports have ranked high on the punctuality as per Cirium.

Previously, in November 2022, both Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport and Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport were among the top performers globally in terms of punctuality, beating other bigger airports in India, including Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

As per the Cirium report, Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) was the only global airport to break the 90 percent on-time departure (OTD) barrier, with a 90.43 percent OTP. The airport serves 29 airlines and 77 routes and had 14,658 scheduled single-segment flights in March. The Kempegowda International (BLR) in Bengaluru came second at 86.14%, followed by Bogota's El Dorado International (BOG) in Colombia.

The Copenhagen Airport (CPH) rounded out the top 20 with an OTP of 77.74%. In November 2022, Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport was ranked among the top 20 most punctual airlines globally in the Global Airport category.

In the Large Airports category, which can also include airports listed on the Global Airports rankings, Hyderabad and Bengaluru topped the list. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) in Hyderabad has been performing exceptionally well in this category with close to 90 percent OTP. Usually, the top three airports in this category are all located in Japan.

No airports in Medium and Small categories from India could make it to the top 20 list of each category.

Halwara airport likely to begin ops in Sept

Chandigarh: After some initial hiccups, the upcoming international airport at Halwara, 40 km away from Ludhiana, is likely to be ready by September as the Punjab public works department (PWD) hopes to get work on the terminal building completed by July-end.

“Bids have been allotted and work is progressing well. The airport terminal would give connectivity to the Army area. There was initially some hurdle as the contract for internal roads had to be terminated and reallocated, which led to some delay. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) will take over once the construction is complete,” said a PWD official.

The civil aviation department is hoping that the AAI will be able to take over in August. “They also need to float tender and shift some of their infrastructure from Sahnewal. That too will take some time and we have asked them to do it in two months. The actual operations at the airport could, therefore, begin in the beginning of September,” said an official with the civil aviation department.

In his Budget speech for 2023-24, finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema had said that for the development of the terminal building at the Halwara Indian Air Force Station, the AAP government had decided to contribute Rs 57 crore and the work is expected to be completed by May 2023 and flight operations expected to start by December.

Will a TSA-like concept be beneficial for security at India’s airports?

In the past few weeks, there has been talk of India adopting the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) system for airports in the country. The US implemented the TSA after the 9/11 attacks to prevent similar attacks in the future. It was felt that aviation was one of the most critically affected sectors due to a lack of consistency and integration in the US homeland security infrastructure.

Moneycontrol examines whether the TSA system is better than the current security arrangements at Indian airports and what advantages it may bring. >>>>

With the integration of the new terminal building with the existing one likely to be completed next month, a senior Pune airport official said that passenger comfort was a priority. "The new building, which is likely to start operations from September, will have several facilities, including good seating arrangements. Proper seating is very essential in any public transport facility. We have received complains about the condition of chairs at the existing building. However, there will be no such problem at the new terminal," an airport official told TOI.

Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke confirmed that recliners will be provided at the new terminal.

The Pune airport has not been doing good in the airport service quality surveys conducted by the Airports Council International. The feeling of comfort, according to many surveys, has been missing from the airport, resulting in the facility losing points. "One of the basic reasons is uncomfortable chairs. It becomes extremely difficult for any flyer to wait in the absence of comfortable chairs, especially when the flights are delayed," Varun Chalki, a frequent flyer, said.

Sonal Jayankar, another flyer, said that many chairs were in bad shape at present. "They are mostly dirty, and the cushions are torn. Moreover, many flyers don't care about cleanliness and keep their leftover meal boxes, tea and coffee glasses on chairs, instead of putting them in dustbins. In airports like Delhi and Mumbai, the chairs are extremely comfortable, and there are long recliners for flyers to take a nap, if the flight is delayed or there is a long layover. For an airport, which witnesses more than 20,000 passengers daily, Pune airport authorities should have better passenger amenities," he said.

Manipur violence: Maharashtra students arrive at Mumbai airport in special flight

Students from Maharashtra who were stuck in the violence-hit areas of the north-eastern state of Manipur have been brought back to Mumbai by a special flight on Monday.

The students left Guwahati around 4.30 pm for Mumbai, informed Maharashtra Chief Minister's Office.

After landing safely in Mumbai, the students looked visibly relieved and even posed for photographs with each other.

While talking to ANI, a student Rohit who was stuck in Manipur said, "We want to thank Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The situation in Manipur was pretty bad, the internet was shut and there were firing."

One of the stranded students who were brought back to Mumbai from Manipur tells about the situation in the northeastern state when violence spiralled out of control a few days ago.

Another student said, "Suddenly attacks started happening. There was open firing too. We witnessed everything in front of our eyes. There was CRPF security near the campus. Still, the students were very scared and everybody wanted to return to their home."
