Autistic boy denied boarding over 'threat' at Bengaluru airport

Bengaluru: In a shocking incident at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) here, a 15-year-old autistic boy was initially denied boarding by the SriLankan Airlines ground staff who claimed he could be a threat to the pilots and fellow passengers.

However, his mother fought against the bizarre decision of the airlines crew, who finally allowed him to board the flight after a two-hour ordeal.

The crew members, though, allegedly kept following the teenager till the plane in an intimidating manner. The mother has lodged a complaint with the airline and Bengaluru airport seeking action against the inconsiderate crew.

It was supposed to be a sweet beginning of a memorable holiday to the Maldives for the Menons and their two teenage sons from Babusapalya. They reached KIA on the evening of May 16 to board the SriLankan Airlines flight UL 174 to Colombo en route to Male. But things took a sour turn around 12.30am on May 17 when the mother, father and sons were waiting to check-in their luggage for the flight.

"Two male ground staffers of SriLankan Airlines came up to us and asked questions about our 15-year-old younger son, who is autistic and communicates using a mobile app. Shockingly, they began to say that he would be a threat to the pilots and fellow passengers on the plane if allowed to board. My son was hearing all this and stood scared holding our hands," recalled the boy's mother, who was stunned by the thoughtless approach the crew was taking towards an autistic passenger.

While the family showed the SriLankan Airlines duo at KIA the boy's unique disability ID (UDID) card issued by the government of India, they demanded to see a certificate of the boy's treating doctor that he could travel by flight. "I had to explain to them that autism is not a disease and there is no need for a doctor to treat him, let alone authenticate him to fly. He is a well-travelled boy and his last trip was to Dubai, and he has never been harassed over his condition," the mother, who is a special educator and psychologist, said.

With the airline crew holding up the autistic teen and the family by forcing them out of the check-in line, the parents argued it was illegal to deny boarding to the boy over his condition. However, they were reprimanded by the crew. "Our questions soon had the crew turn their conversation to threats of denying boarding to all of us. My teenage son was watching all this unfold and we kept calm to ensure he did not get upset," the mother said.

Taking note of the situation, officials of Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL), which operates KIA, intervened. They informed the airline crew the family had informed them about their travel with a child with special needs two days in advance, and the information was duly shared with the airline's office.

"Following this, they took a copy of his UDID card and contacted the airline higher-ups. Finally, after two hours, we got clearance for my son to fly and the information on the clearance was given to us by the BIAL staff, who were extremely supportive in the situation," said the Bengalurean.

But the family's ordeal didn't end even then as two SriLankan Airlines crew allegedly tailed the teen from a distance as the group cleared pre-departure security checks and boarded the flight.

Kerala nurse who assisted in mid-air delivery found dead in UK

Prathibha Kesavan, a Malayali nurse, who helped another Malayali woman in a mid-air delivery two years ago is found dead at her UK residence on May 29. Prathibha was working at Addenboorke's Hospital in Cambridge in the UK. The cause of the death is yet to be determined but her friends and family suspect she had a heart attack, reported Onmanorama.

Prathibha hailed from Kumarakom and she was found dead at her residence a few hours before her flight to Kerala. She has been working in the United Kingsom for the last two years.

Her sister, who lives in London, was trying to reach her and when Prathibha did not respond to the calls, she reached out to their mutual friends.

Prathibha Kesavan drew attention after she assisted for a mid-air delivery in 2021. In October 2021, a Malayali woman on an Air India flight from London to Kochi suffered labour pains when Prathbibha, who was on the same flight, had assisted Pathanamthitta-native Mariya Philip delivered a baby boy mid-air.

Air India had posted on social media about this feat. They said they were en route to Kochi when the delivery happened and they landed in Frankfurt with the new baby boy. Air India wrote, "The flight was diverted to Frankfurt so that mother and baby could get immediate medical attention. Air India officials at Frankfurt were in all readiness when the flight landed there and mother & baby were taken immediately for necessary medical attention."

Passenger Suffers Cardiac Arrest On Tokyo-Delhi Air India Flight, Cardiovascular Surgeon Comes To Rescue

A senior cardiovascular surgeon from Chandigarh on Friday helped a co-passenger, who had a cardiac arrest onboard a flight from Japan, to survive. This incident took place onboard an Air India flight from Tokyo to Delhi. The flight, on the advice of the cardiologist, was diverted to Kolkata where the patient was taken to hospital and saved but not before five hours of struggle to save the patient with the help of crew.

"We were not sure if we could get help if flight was directed to China so it was a daunting task to sustain the patient for five hours with whatever limited medical resources available on flight," surgeon Deepak Puri said on reaching New Delhi.

He said it was heartening that this could be achieved with support of the captain and crew of AI 307.

"On the heart attack of the patient, I did cardiopulmonary resuscitation and revived him but we were over sea and nearest destination was Kolkata - five hours away - so we had a daunting task of keeping him stable for five hours with minimum resuscitation resources," Puri told IANS.

The airlines arranged special permission for landing in Kolkata and an ambulance to take him to nearest cardiac hospital on arrival and was successful in transferring the patient safely.

Mangaluru: Passengers of Mangaluru-bound Air India Express flight IX 814, which was scheduled to take off from Dubai at 2.25 am on Sunday, had a harrowing experience as the flight was delayed by more than 10 hours. However, the passengers complained that they were not informed about the delay in departure by the airline, which caused them much inconvenience.

A tweet posted by @pritham_1974 read: “Flight from mangalore Dxb IX 814 delayed by 9.30 hours, No SMS nor a call from Airlines. Airport staff informed passengers after one hour waiting for check in, Poor coordination from the airline staff at the airport .. not expected from TATA group #AirIndia #ratantata #dgca.”

A tweet from handle @Nenmeli said, “@ DrSJaishankar @PMOIndia Around 185 Airindia express IX814 passengers to IXE are stuck and suffering in DXB terminal 2 since last night due to flight delay. Now at 6.10AM at DXB, we don’t know when the flight will depart. Please do the needful urgently.”

In another tweet, @Nenmeli replied to TOI that after more than 10 hours of delay, passengers were allowed to check in around 9.30 am on Sunday. “Also, the airlines arranged food for all of us,” the tweet said.

An AIE official at Mangaluru International Airport said that the flight was delayed in Dubai due to technical reasons and is expected to land at MIA around 6.45pm.

Sources said that the major rehabilitation/recarpeting work under way at Mangaluru Airport runway 06/24, is another cause for the delay since flights cannot land here anytime between 9.30am to 6pm, except Sunday and national holidays. The works which started on January 27 will continue till the end of this month.

Senior citizen gets panic attack on Newark-Mumbai flight, screams, hurls abuses for seven hours

Mumbai: A senior citizen, travelling business class with his wife on a packed Air India flight from Newark to Mumbai on Wednesday experienced a severe panic attack which had him scream and shout for close to seven hours, even as cabin crew and passengers on board tried to pacify and restrain him. "He swung between bouts of calm and rage.

He was verbally abusive and on three separate occasions during the episode, he tried to strangle his rather frail looking wife. We had to rush in with the crew and restrain him," said Pravin Tonsekar, a business class passenger on board the said flight. The senior citizen calmed down only after two doctors on board administered sedatives.

Air India flight AI-144 departed Newark around twenty minutes past noon and the aircraft cabin was calm for about three hours post take-off, said Tonsekar, seated on 9 K in the business class. "Then I saw the senior citizen seated on 14 K arguing with a flight attendant. That went on for quite some time, about an hour," he said.

Then all of a sudden the senior citizen, who was about 6 foot tall and appeared physically fit began yelling and shouting in panic. "He wanted to disembark. He was screaming, telling the crew to open the door and let him out. He must have been a frequent flyer because one of the crew members who was trying to pacify him tried to reason with him saying, you flew with us last time and all is well with this flight too. But he couldn't be pacified. He would scream, `stop, open the door' and then at another time hurl abuse and expletives at the crew," he said.

The tirade of abuse and panic attack went on for close to seven hours, he added. "It was an extremely trying situation for the crew. Even the second batch of crew, whose duty time hadn't started yet and so were in plainclothes got up and tried to ease the situation and calm him down," he said. Passengers had a harrowing time. The man was finally administered sedatives by two doctors on board even as the crew and others restrained him. Thereafter the flight progressed smoothly and landed in Mumbai around noon on Thursday.

Soon, British Airways to launch Kochi flights

Kochi: Flying between Kerala and the United Kingdom is set to become hassle-free and smooth with the British Airways likely to launch a direct flight service between London and Kochi. Sources said that Cochin International Airport Limited (Cial) has already held discussions with British Airways, and if everything goes as planned, the service is expected to begin in three months.

Though Cial officially refused to confirm the plan, top sources said talks are progressing, and the airline company is interested in the scheduled sector. It is also learnt that the airline has assessed the baggage handling and passenger amenities at the Kochi airport.

“European connectivity has been a long-time demand of expats; increasing more direct services to European destinations has been a priority for Cial too. Cial officials have met with British Airways officials during the Routes World Conference 2022 held in Las Vegas and have shared the airport profile and facilities with them. Since then, there have been multiple rounds of positive discussions about a direct flight,” said a source.

The proposed service will be a big relief for Keralites in the UK, considering their huge numbers there. Malayali associations in the UK have always demanded more direct flights between London and Kerala.

Air India-Vistara Merger To Put Singapore Airlines On Forefront In Indian Aviation Industry

Singapore Airlines Group on Tuesday reported its highest-ever net profit and outlined various strategic initiatives, including the proposed merger of Vistara with Air India to boost the Singaporean carrier's presence in the Indian market. Vistara is a joint venture between Singapore Airlines and Tata Group, which holds 51 per cent stake. The process to merge Vistara with Air India is underway. On Tuesday, Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group posted a record net profit of 2,157 million Singapore Dollars for FY2022-23. In the year-ago period, it had a net loss of SGD 962 million.

"This was mainly driven by better operating performance (+SGD 3,302 million) and lower net finance charges (+SGD 338 million), and partially offset by a tax expense versus a tax credit last year (around SGD 615 million)," the airline group said in a release.

Despite the Covid pandemic, the group said it remained committed to its longstanding strategy of buying and operating new-generation aircraft. Among other efforts, the group did the retrofit of its Airbus A380 and Boeing 737-8 aircraft and placed an order for the all-new Airbus A350F freighters.

When US Ambassador Eric Garcetti apologised to Shah Rukh Khan after he was detained at LA airport in 2016

Shah Rukh Khan invited US Ambassador Eric Garcetti at Mannat, where they had a hearty conversation about Bollywood, Hollywood, and more. He even posted many a photo from their visit. Their meeting takes us back in time (in 2016) when SRK was stopped at the US airport for the third time. After he took to Twitter to complain about how it ‘sucks’ to be detained every single time, Garcetti later posted an apology on Twitter.

It was in 2016 when Shah Rukh Khan was stopped at LA airport for the third time in a span of seven years. The exact reason for the detention was not clear to Indian officials. On the wee hours of August 12, 2016, SRK had taken to Twitter and written, “I fully understand & respect security with the way the world is, but to be detained at US immigration every damn time really really sucks (sic).”

He further mentioned, “The brighter side is while waiting caught some really nice Pokemons (sic)”, while talking about the much-hyped game.

Shah Rukh Khan’s detention and tweet first drew an apology from US state department official, Nisha Biswal. On the same day, she tweeted, “Sorry for the hassle at the airport, @iamsrk - even American diplomats get pulled for extra screening! (sic).”

Later that same day in 2016, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti apologised to SRK on Twitter and wrote, “Sorry for the trouble at LAX @iamsrk. We are working to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Your work inspires millions, including in the US (sic).”

Singapore Air to switch out Airbus A380 from Indian airports (temporarily) in June 2023

From time to time, airlines need to switch equipment to make a good match between demand and supply. This move, unfortunately, means that Delhi and Mumbai will both lose their A380 equipment at the same time in the coming weeks.

Singapore Airlines has been busy adjusting their aircraft for the following months, and I only discovered this because one of my upcoming flights had a new seat layout instead of the A380 in the weeks ahead. Delhi and Mumbai receive one A380-800 aircraft every evening, which means the late-night departure from these two airports is on an A380.

From Mumbai, Singapore Airlines will operate the A380-800 on June 13, 2023, for the last time on SQ423 (departs 23:40) until it returns on September 1, 2023, to service the sector again. From Delhi, Singapore Airlines will operate the A380-800 on June 14, 2023, for the last time on SQ403 (departs 21:55) until it returns on July 31, 2023, to service the sector again.

That would mean that the Suites, which are much loved by many folks in India, will be replaced with the First Class cabin for a small period.

Air India imposes two-year flying ban on individual for unruly behaviour onboard Delhi-London flight in April

Air India has imposed a two-year flying ban on an individual who caused physical harm to two female cabin crew members onboard a Delhi-London flight on April 10, a source said on Friday.

The Delhi Police had filed a case against the passenger, identified as 25-year-old Jaskirat Singh Padda from Punjab, on a complaint filed by Air India's cabin crew supervisor.

The source on Friday said that an internal committee set up by Air India with respect to the incident unanimously decided that the individual does not deserve a lenient view and banned him from flying with the airline for a period of two years.

The individual's behaviour was classified as Level 3 category offence, the source added.

There was no immediate comment from Air India.

Regulations of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) provide for classifying unruly passenger behaviour into three levels and such people can face flying ban for varying periods.

Unruly behaviour such as physical gestures, verbal harassment and unruly inebriation are classified as Level 1 while physically abusive behaviour like pushing, kicking or sexual harassment are classified as Level 2.

Life threatening behaviour such as damage to aircraft operating systems, physical violence like choking and murderous assault are considered as Level 3.

Depending on the level of unruly behaviour, an internal committee set up by the airline concerned can decide on the duration for which an unruly passenger can be banned from flying.

Citing the complaint by Air India's cabin crew supervisor, the Delhi Police, on April 10, said that after one hour of flight, the unruly passenger was seen trying to open a door of the aircraft.

“There was a medical emergency midair around 11pm on Wednesday. The crew provided all assistance, but the passenger died on board,” said an Air India official at the airport.

The pilots had alerted the airport authorities before the flight landed around 7.30am on Thursday. An ambulance took the woman’s body to the airport hospital, before it was transferred to a government hospital for an autopsy, airport sources said.

The woman had complained of uneasiness on the flight and is believed to have died of natural causes, the sources said.

SriLankan Airlines to be given to India’s TATA?

The heads of the government are discussing the possibility of transferring SriLankan Airlines, which has recorded a net profit of USD 3 million in the financial year 2022-23, to India’s ‘TATA Company’.

TATA, one of India’s largest business groups, already operates several airlines including Air India.

The government said that SriLankan Airlines is at the forefront of loss-making companies in Sri Lanka, and therefore it should be restructured.

Meanwhile, Aviation Voice has reported that SriLankan made a net profit of USD 3 million in the 2022-23 financial year for the first time after Emirates exited from management in 2008.

During a Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) meeting held recently, the Srilankan Airlines said that it has earned USD 104 million as operating profit. As a result, it has earned a net profit of USD 3 million once the interest expenses of USD 101 million are excluded.

However, the airline recorded a loss of Rs.69 billion mainly due to the exchange losses (exchange loss of Rs.63 billion), but this is said to be a decrease from the loss of Rs.163 billion recorded in the year 2021-22.

Pakistan’s flag carrier remains in Indian airspace for 10 minutes keeping Indian air force on high alert

Lahore: In a rare incident, an aircraft of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) entered Indian airspace after it could not land at the Lahore airport amid bad weather, it emerged on Monday.

The incident occurred on May 4, when Lahore-bound Pakistani International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-248 slated to land at Allama Iqbal International Airport however the extreme weather conditions forced it to enter the air space of a neighboring country and that’s in a time when the tensions between two sides remain unabated.

As the aging commercial airliner entered Indian airspace, the Indian air force was reportedly on high alert and was closely monitoring the jetliner.

Amid the heavy rain and thunderstorm, the pilot aborted the landing at Lahore airport, and after being told to perform a go-around for another attempt by the control tower, the pilot ‘accidentally’ flew into Indian airspace for around 10 minutes before landing at the Multan airport.

It was reported that the PIA jet flew over Taran Sahib and Rasulpur in the Indian Punjab, and then turned around towards Pakistan near Kasur. The plane traveled a total of 120 km in the Indian territory for almost ten minutes.

During the brief period, the air control officers of the two countries remained in contact until the pilot managed to take the aircraft back to own country.
