SpiceJet plane faces tech issue in Tel Aviv, aircraft taken to Jordan

A SpiceJet aircraft that operated a flight from the national capital to Tel Aviv on Sunday is facing a technical issue and the plane has been taken to Jordan to rectify the problem, according to sources. SpiceJet had operated the flight, with an A340 aircraft, under Operation Ajay.

On Monday, the sources said that after landing at Tel Aviv, a technical issue was detected in the aircraft. To rectify the problem, the plane has been taken to Jordan, which was the nearest place that has the facilities to look into the issue, they added. There was no immediate comment from SpiceJet.

On Sunday, SpiceJet said it will be operating a flight with an A340 plane to Tel Aviv. Operation Ajay has been launched by the government to facilitate the return of Indians who wish to come back from Israel where an intense conflict is going on with militant group Hamas.

Uganda Airlines takes off as new Mumbai route adds to East Africa's air travel options

The long-awaited direct flights from Uganda Airlines to Mumbai have already begun, giving travelers more alternatives in the East Africa-India aviation corridor.

The move may also place smaller airlines in a competitive position that will likely put pressure on costs and yields.

On October 7, the national airline of Uganda flew for the first trip to the financial hub of India, a destination it would service three times each week, according to a report by The East African, an East African news publication.

The service, which was initially promised two years ago, is the second off the African peninsula and Uganda Airlines' 12th destination. Prior to the start of service between Entebbe and Lagos the following week.

Air Tanzania, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, and Ethiopian Airlines, who have been connecting customers from Uganda traveling to India through their various hubs, are in direct rivalry with the new entrant. While flag carrier Air India also offers service between Nairobi and New Delhi, Indian airline Indigo also started flying to Nairobi earlier this year.

Kerala High Court seeks response from Centre, State on plea against exorbitant airfares to Gulf countries

The Kerala High Court on Thursday sought the response of the Central and State governments to a plea challenging the exorbitant airfares for travelling to countries in the middle-east. [Zainul Abideen v Union of India & Ors.].

Justice Devan Ramachandran passed the order while considering the plea filed by a non-resident Indian Zainul Abideen who is the Managing Director of the Safari group of companies which is situated in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The company is stated to have over five thousand employees of which over three thousand are Indians including Keralites.

The petitioner contended that the unfair air ticket price hikes are unaffordable for the families of many of the employees of his company as well as other expatriates.

The rate increases fourfold during festival seasons and expatriates are often unable to meet their families back in Kerala, he added.

“The ticket prices have skyrocketed at a time when air travel has become an integral part of most people's lives like never before,” the plea stated.

It is contended that while expatriates constantly work hard and contribute to the economic social development of India, the country's commitment and support for expatriates is questionable.

“The exorbitant airfares are inhumane, illegal and arbitrary from the part of respondents,” the petitioner argued.

The Indians left for the home country on a "first come first serve" basis, informed sources told PTI.

Those who are returning will not be paying any fare and the government is bearing the cost of their return.

There was a long queue of Indians, including students, at the airport to board the special flight being operated under 'Operation Ajay' from Tel Aviv.

Suddenly we saw some notification and the links for every Indian citizen through the embassy of India which boosted our morale. We felt like the embassy of India is connected with us which was a kind of relief to us. And then we got all the arrangements," says Shubham Kumar, a student in Israel.

IndiGo Forgets To Connect Two Passengers On Their Flight Out Of Istanbul

An Indian couple flying from London to Mumbai on codeshare flights between IndiGo and Turkish Airlines had to spend an entire day at Istanbul Airport due to an error by the ground handling staff. While the first leg of the journey from London to Istanbul went smoothly, a mis-connection in Istanbul resulted in major inconvenience for the two passengers.

A couple traveling between London Heathrow and Mumbai had to spend 24 hours at Istanbul Airport after they missed their connecting flight. According to The Times of India (ToI), the elderly couple flew from London to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines and were supposed to take their onward connection operated by IndiGo.

The daughter of the two passengers told ToI that her parents were made to sit at the boarding gate with their boarding passes. But after a few hours, her mother went to check about the flight status at the counter and was told to wait until further instructions. They were eventually told that their flight had departed.

The couple’s daughter then contacted IndiGo’s helpline in India, following which the carrier issued them fresh boarding passes for a flight to Mumbai the following day.

IndiGo has acknowledged the error and has apologized for the incident. The carrier expressed regret over what it says was an error of the ground handling team in Istanbul and is in discussion with Turkish Airlines regarding this. The ToI quotes the airline’s spokesperson as saying, “We are aware of the incident of a mis-connection that happened at Istanbul airport with a senior couple traveling from London to Mumbai via Istanbul on August 17, 2023. This was a regrettable case of a human error with our Turkish Ground Handling Services due to which the passengers missed their connecting flight to Mumbai … We have already taken up this incident to our partner airline and extend our sincere apologies to the affected passengers.”

Air India’s nonstop flights flying high! San Francisco recognises India as one of its fastest-growing overseas visitor markets

After JFK Airport in New York, San Francisco has become the second most prominent entry point for Indians coming to the United States. This surge in Indian travelers is largely attributed to Air India’s expansion and the introduction of new non-stop flights, as per officials who recently visited Mumbai to explore opportunities within the lucrative Indian market.

Kevin Bumen, the Chief Financial & Commercial Officer at San Francisco International Airport, stated that their market analysis indicates a daily average of approximately 1,100 passengers traveling between San Francisco, the Bay Area, and India. Air India has been a notable success story, managing to grow and thrive during the pandemic by making significant strides in expanding their operations in San Francisco.

San Francisco ranks as the second most frequented gateway in the US for Indian travelers, with 17 weekly flights, closely following JFK Airport’s 21 weekly flights. If United Airlines were operating at full capacity, San Francisco could potentially claim the top spot with an additional 14 weekly flights.

Air India now offers nonstop flights from San Francisco to New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, making it an exciting development in the travel industry. Indian travelers to San Francisco are approaching pre-pandemic levels, which is a positive sign, according to Hubertus Funke, the executive vice president and chief tourism officer of the San Francisco Travel Association. In 2019, San Francisco Airport hosted around 210,000 visitors, and they anticipate double-digit growth from the Indian market in the coming years.

Akasa Air Reportedly Granted Flying Rights To Saudi Arabia, Qatar, And Kuwait

Since its inception, India’s budget carrier Akasa Air has always maintained that it would fly internationally as soon as it meets regulatory conditions. With 20 aircraft in its fleet, it has fulfilled one of the Indian government’s conditions for overseas flights. And now, the carrier has reportedly also been given the nod to fly to some destinations in the Middle East. The ever-popular Dubai, however, is not one of them.

Indian low-cost carrier Akasa Air has been given permission by Indian authorities to operate flights to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. The three Middle Eastern countries get plenty of traffic from India, and Akasa has been given flying rights based on existing bilateral rights for these destinations, according to a report by The Times of India.

This is pretty much according to the airline’s plans, as it was exploring destinations in the Middle East as well as Southeast Asia. However, the most popular foreign destination from India – Dubai – is still out of reach for Akasa.

The India-Dubai market is one of the most lucrative sectors for airlines operating on the route. With a substantial Indian population in the UAE, airlines from both countries want an increasing share of the seats allocated for this sector.

However, it seems that the current bilateral agreement for flights between India and Dubai has been completely exhausted, and Akasa will have to wait until further changes to the agreement are announced.

The India-UAE sector has been a hot topic for airlines from both countries. The agreement that currently allows 66,000 seats per week to both nations was signed in 2014. All major Indian airlines understand how vital this sector is and deploy their planes to Dubai from several Indian cities.

Singapore Airlines to ramp up flights in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Singapore Airlines Group is rejigging its Hyderabad itineraries. Starting at the end of October, it will be pulling out its low-cost carrier Scoot from the Hyderabad market while ramping up the presence of its full-service airlines Singapore Airlines (SIA) to 12 flights a week, up from its existing schedule of seven flights a week.

Scoot, which is a subsidiary of Singapore’s national carrier SIA, will operate its last flight out of Hyderabad on October 28 with SIA’s new schedule kicking in from October 29 as it takes over Scoot's daily services between Hyderabad and Singapore.

Scoot currently operates daily Hyderabad-Singapore-Hyderabad flights using narrow body Airbus 320s.

SIA, which has completed 20 years of operations from Hyderabad, currently operates wide body A-350s four days a week from Hyderabad and the narrow body B-737-8 on three days.

With the new schedule coming into force from October end, SIA will operate A-350s daily while the B-737-8 will operate five days a week.

Singapore Airlines general manager for India Sy Yen Chen said, the decision was driven by market demand.

“Post Covid-19 we restarted our SIA and Scoot flights but after a year we realised that the market is asking for more. We got a clear signal that the market wants daily wide-body aircraft service and that’s why we decided to take a relook,” Chen said.

He pointed out that another key driver of this decision was the increasing demand for pharma and biotech cargo out of Hyderabad, which wide-body aircraft equipped with temperature control capabilities and the ability to carry large consignments that need skid loading, are better positioned to service.

“We can better serve the global pharma supply chain from Hyderabad through daily wide-body service as we can carry 15,000 kg per flight of cargo on Airbus 350s instead of 2400 kg per flight on narrow body Boeing 737-8 aircraft,” Chen explained.

Dassault Aviation CEO to visit India, discuss marine variant of Rafale jets

New Delhi: Various aspects of India's proposed purchase of 26 naval variant of the Rafale aircraft are likely to be discussed during a two-day visit to New Delhi by Eric Trappier, the chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation, the maker of the jet, people familiar with the matter said on Sunday.

Trappier arrives in Delhi on Monday to hold negotiations on the procurement, they said.

In July, the defence ministry approved the purchase of the Rafale (marine) jets from France, primarily for deployment on board the indigenously-built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will also pay a four-day visit to Italy and France beginning Monday to expand bilateral strategic engagements and explore industrial cooperation for joint development of military hardware.

The proposed procurement of the Rafale jets by India is also likely to figure during Singh's talks with his French counterpart, Sebastian Lecornu, in Paris.

It is learnt that Trappier is likely to meet Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, Navy chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari.

There is no official word on Trappier's visit to India yet.

The defence ministry in July said the procurement of the jets along with associated ancillary equipment, including weapon systems and spares, would be based on an inter-governmental agreement (IGA) and that the price and other terms of the purchase will be negotiated with the French government after taking into account all relevant aspects.

Chennai-Bound Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 Returns To Frankfurt Following Engine Issues

A Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 (registration D-AIGV/MSN 325) flying from Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) to Chennai was reportedly forced to return to its origin due to an engine issue. The aircraft was flying at cruising altitude over the Czech Republic when the crew decided to turn around towards Frankfurt while descending. The aircraft landed safely nearly two hours and twenty minutes after departure. No injuries to passengers or crew were reported.

On October 1, Lufthansa flight LH758, flown by an Airbus A340-300, was en route to Chennai when the crew aborted the flight and returned to FRA. The flight departed the gate at 11:15 local time, 15 minutes after the scheduled departure from FRA. Data from FlightRadar24.com shows that about 30 minutes into the flight, the aircraft reached its cruising altitude of 33,000 ft (10,060 m).

The aircraft was flying at a speed of 500 knots (575 mph, 926 km/h). Minutes after maintaining a level position, the aircraft descended to 29,000 ft (8,840 m) while preparing for its return to Frankfurt. Maintaining FL290 for nearly 25 minutes, the pilots dumped excess fuel before landing. The aircraft touched down at runway 25C at FRA approximately two hours and twenty minutes after departure.

All passengers and crew were safe, with no reported injuries. What was meant to be a nearly nine-hour flight to Chennai turned into a rather quick journey back to Frankfurt. The aircraft in question is 23.7 years old and delivered to Lufthansa in February 2000.

The quadjet is powered by four CFM56 engines. Specific details of the engine issues and the circumstances under which the flight was diverted are unknown at the moment. It will be some time until more details about the aircraft and its status are known.

India-China feud keeps international planes out of Nepal airport

His hotel offers breath-taking mountain views from the town of Lumbini in Nepal - Buddha's birthplace. But a hoped-for surge in tourist numbers has failed to materialise, blamed in part on tensions between Nepal's giant neighbours India and China.

Lumbini saw close to a million visitors in 2022, according to the Lumbini Development Trust - and it was this number the government was betting on when it spent $76m (£61m) to build the Gautam Buddha International Airport, which opened in May last year.

Domestic tourists make up most of the visitors, with just less than a third travelling from neighbouring India.

The terminal, also known as Bhairahawa Airport, lets tourists fly directly to Lumbini instead of travelling 250km (155 miles) by land from the capital, Kathmandu.

Yet the anticipated travel boom never materialised, something travel industry experts attribute to a lack of early promotion and incentives to international airlines.

"The government asked us to expand tourism infrastructure saying more international flights would come. But my hotel is two-thirds empty. I am now struggling to repay my loan," Mr Sharma tells the BBC, adding that he is millions of rupees in debt.

Travel industry experts argue tourist arrivals, particularly from overseas, will go up if there are regular scheduled international flights operating out of Bhairahawa airport.

But Nepali officials say Delhi has refused to allow big passenger planes to fly west through its airspace - meaning planes cannot fly over India to reach the Gautam Buddha airport. Access to Indian airspace would mean shorter flights at lower cost.

Some in Nepal also believe that Delhi is wary of the fact that the Gautam Buddha airport was constructed by China's Northwest Civil Aviation Airport.

The airport is also located near Nepal's border with India - west of where the two Asian giants' troops clashed last December in the Arunachal Pradesh region, just seven months after the terminal opened to international traffic.

IndiGo Announces Codeshare With British Airways, Enhances Partnership With International Airlines

India's largest domestic airline and budget air carrier IndiGo has announced a codeshare partnership with British Airways. With the annoucement, IndiGo further enhances its partnership with international airlines across the globe. This is the second codeshare partnership by IndiGo with a United Kingdom based airline. The air carrier already has codeshare partnerships with Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Air France-KLM, Australian carrier Qantas and Virgin Atlantic.

IndiGo also has an interline pact with Jetstar, where an interline arrangement refers to a pact to issue and accept tickets for flights that are operated by the partner airline. On the other hand, code sharing allows an airline to book its passengers on its partner carriers and provide seamless travel to destinations where it has no presence.

Under this partnership, British Airways will add its code onto a couple of destinations across IndiGo's network and customers can enjoy improved connectivity between India and the United Kingdom for travel, the airline said in a release. Codeshare flights will be available for travel from October 12, subject to government approval.

"We announce our codeshare agreement with British Airways. This partnership expands the choices available to British Airways customers for journeys to/from London Heathrow, using IndiGo's extensive network in India," Abhijit Dasgupta, senior vice president for network planning and revenue management at IndiGo, said.

British Airways operates with 56 flights a week to five Indian cities -- Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Earlier, IndiGo announced San Francisco as its fifth destination in the United States under codeshare with Turkish Airlines, connecting Istanbul to the Silcon Valley.

'Harrowing' 24 hours: When IndiGo ‘forgot’ an aged couple connecting from London to Mumbai at Istanbul airport

New Delhi: An elderly couple recently spent 24 hours at Istanbul Airport on chairs as IndiGo reportedly “forgot” to put them on their connecting flight to India.

The couple — with the husband being wheelchair-bound — were returning to Mumbai from London and had booked ticket from the airline with the London-Istanbul sector operated by Turkish Airlines and the leg to Mumbai by IndiGo. They then got the next day’s flight to Mumbai after spending 24 hours on chairs at Istanbul terminal.

“My father, Rajesh Shah (64), and mother, Rashmi Shah (59), had a single PNR ticket for the journey on August 17, 2023. Dad was on a wheelchair as he had (earlier) suffered multiple strokes and has undergone surgeries and cannot walk that long as is required at big airports. They landed in Istanbul as per schedule,” the couple’s Bengaluru-based daughter Richa Shah said.

After landing, the ground staff assisted them with taking the connecting flight to Mumbai. “They were made to sit at a boarding gate with their boarding passes. When a few hours passed, my mother went to check at the counter regarding the flight status. The staff took the boarding passes from her and asked them to sit till further instructions. This kept happening repeatedly and they were only told ‘my supervisor is on the way, you have to talk to him',” Richa said.

The Shahs were finally told that the Mumbai flight had departed. “They panicked on being told this and reached out to me frantically. I also panicked and tried to somehow telephonically reach out to IndiGo to assist them. The local staff at the airport only spoke Turkish and my parents could not communicate with them,” she said.

Finally when Richa managed to speak to someone on the IndiGo helpline from India, the airline issued them a boarding card for a Mumbai flight the next day. “My parents are vegetarians and need constant medication and medical support. They were stranded in this condition for 24 hours at Istanbul. They spent 24 hours on chairs at a secluded place in the airport with a loaf of bread and coke. They were told that they will be picked up from the same place for the next day flight,” she said.

GPS Spoofing: Deceptive GPS lead over 20 planes astray in Iran

In the past two weeks, more than 20 airline and corporate jets flying over Iran strayed from its intended path after they were led off course by deceptive GPS signals sent from the ground, overpowering the aircraft’s own navigation systems.

These misleading GPS signals affected various aircraft, including Boeing 777s, 737s, and 747s. One such Boeing 777 was so significantly diverted from its route that the crew had to inquire with the Baghdad Air Traffic Control, asking, “What time is it, and where are we?” This revelation comes from a report by Ops Group, a flight data intelligence website.

Indian airlines such as Air India (AI), IndiGo, and Vistara frequently traverse this airspace on their journeys to destinations like San Francisco, Istanbul, Baku, and London. AI and IndiGo employ Boeing 777 aircraft for these routes, with IndiGo’s 777 aircraft operated by Turkish Airlines.

Despite these concerning incidents, none of the three airlines or the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) responded to queries of journalists. The cause of these troubles is known as GPS signal spoofing, described as the covert replacement of a genuine satellite signal with a manipulated one, causing a GPS receiver to provide incorrect position and time data.

This definition originates from the US Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics, which provides technical guidance for government regulatory authorities. While GPS signal interference of this nature has existed for over a decade, it’s the first time civilian passenger flights have encountered such a substantial threat.

According to Ops Group, most of the recent GPS spoofing incidents occurred within Iran’s airspace, specifically in airway UM688. In response, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a memorandum to airlines titled ‘Iraq/Azerbaijan – GPS jamming and spoofing poses safety risk.’

The US civil aviation regulator cautioned that reported potential spoofing activities in Iraq and Azerbaijan pose a safety risk to civil aviation operations within the Baghdad and Baku flight information regions (FIR).

A senior commander from an Indian airline, speaking anonymously, remarked, “We don’t use airway UM688, but we do traverse Iranian airspace. While we haven’t encountered spoofing, we did experience GPS jamming on a flight last week.” Unlike spoofing, GPS jamming is more easily detectable, as the erratic readings quickly reveal that GPS signals are being disrupted.

The commander explained, “GPS jamming is relatively common during long-haul flights. It occurs when we enter Russia from the North Pole or approach areas like the Estonian border or Simferopol in Crimea. There are established procedures to handle jamming, relying on the aircraft’s navigation system, which doesn’t depend solely on GPS.”

In contrast, spoofing is far more insidious. The aircraft’s GPS receiver cannot discern false GPS signals, and the flight management system accepts these counterfeits, causing the aircraft to deviate from its intended course.

According to Capt Amit Singh, an air safety expert, “In most commercial jets, the aircraft’s navigation system will detect a disparity between the aircraft’s inertial reference system (IRS) position and GPS position. Pilots should deactivate GPS inputs; if they fail to do so and continue off course, air traffic control (ATC) will alert them.”

The safety implications are significant. As Capt Singh pointed out, “UM688 is a heavily trafficked route, with many flights from West Asia to Europe and the US passing through. Some areas along this route are conflict zones with ongoing military activities, making straying from the flight plan extremely unsafe.”

As the aircraft was not found fit to undertake the flight today, it was cancelled and those not wishing to reschedule their trip or avail of seats in other airlines were issued a full refund and an appropriate monetary compensation, the source said.

"We are trying to accommodate passengers (those who do not want to cancel their tickets) on other airlines and have arranged hotel accommodations for them as well as those who are unable to return to their homes today," the source said.

"Since Air India accords top priority to safety issues, our engineering team went for a thorough check. But then the aircraft could not be restored for flying. So the flight regrettably had to be cancelled. We took all care of the passengers," the source added.
