US deporting not just students, but tourists and businessmen to India, says external affairs ministry

Not just Indian students, but tourists and businessmen, have been deported by the US in recent months, the external affairs ministry has said.

"They include holders of B-1 and B-2 US visas, for tourists and businesspersons, and H-1s, which are work permits," said an external affairs ministry official to HT.

US ambassador to India, Richard Verma, has said that the embassy has come to know about the difficulty faced by a few students who were advised by the Air India authorities to cancel their trip to the US due to the fear of deportation.

Air India Reopens Doors for US-bound Students

Hyderabad: Around 10 days after barring entry for America-bound students, the Air India has finally opened doors for those students who are travelling to the US to join Silicon Valley University and Northwestern Polytechnic University (NPU), but on the condition of booking their return tickets in advance.

As the US government is yet to give clarity on the accreditation of SVU and NPU, Air India has decided not to take risks on carrying passengers with F1 visas to these institutes. The airline has come up with this new rule after it had to bear the return ticket fare for deported students in the past.

Even in case of deportation, now the students can travel back to India on their already booked return tickets. However, this condition is not applicable to those students who join US universities other than SVU and NPU, according to the Air India office here.

The recent deportation row has caused loss to Air India which had to bear the expense for return tickets of the deported students. So far the national carrier has brought back more than 40 deported students to RGIA at its own cost. According to Air India, none of those deported students paid for their return tickets.

The visit would follow discussions with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on the modalities of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between AAI and Singapore Co-operation Enterprise (SEC).

The AAI had signed an MoU with SEC, during Prime Minister Narender Modi's visit to that country, to co-operate in planning and development of Ahmedabad and Jaipur airports besides, other aspects including design, planning, traffic and commercial development, service quality and operations and management.

The operations of the airports, however, will remain with AAI.

Ahmedabad girl’s nightmarish AI journey

Ahmedabad: The joy of returning home for new year holidays turned into nightmare for 25-year-old Anjali Patel, thanks to Air India (AI). Anjali, who was travelling from San Francisco to Ahmedabad via Guangzhou (China) and Delhi, was forced to shell out Rs 5,820 for extra bag despite having all the requisite permissions for the same.
Anjali, a student of masters in computer science at North Western Polytechnic University in San Francisco, boarded China Southern Airlines (CSA) flight on December 23. Since the flight from San Francisco was delayed, she along with 50 other passengers missed the connecting CSA flight from Guangzhou to Delhi.
"When we took up the matter with the CSA officials, we were accommodated in another flight to Singapore. And from Singapore, we took another flight to Mumbai. The CSA officials gave me certificate that I could carry two piece baggage (two bags of 23 kg each) till my journey to Ahmedabad," said Anjali, who has just finished her third semester.
Anjali's ordeal began when she landed at Mumbai airport and was about to take the flight to Ahmedabad. "The AI officials told me that since I would be flying on domestic route from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, I was allowed only one bag and would have to pay for the second bag which would be charged around Rs 6,000," she said.
"I asked them that if I had come through my original route via Delhi, I wouldn't have been asked to pay for extra baggage then why I was being asked to pay now. Despite several requests they didn't relent. Also at that time, I didn't have enough money," added Anjali.
Anjali was made to wait for eight hours by the AI officials. Only after paying Rs 5,820, she was allowed to board AI-144 from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

Co-pilot accidently triggered jet flight's plunge over Turkey

The co-pilot of a Jet Airways flight that plunged 2,251 feet over Turkey before correcting course last year "inadvertently manipulated" the controls, resulting in the incident, according to an inquiry by aviation regulator DGCA.
The Mumbai-Brussels flight, with 280 passengers aboard, suddenly lost altitude on August 8, 2014, when the 46-year-old co-pilot was in charge. The 40-year-old flight captain was sleeping as permitted under cockpit rules.
The Air Traffic Control in the Turkish capital of Ankara cautioned the co-pilot when the plane began to drop altitude, flying below 32,000 feet. Most passenger planes cruise at an altitude in the range of 30,000 feet to 40,000 feet, and the Jet flight was cleared to fly at 34,000 feet.
The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300 ER, had flown 4 hours and 43 minutes when the incident took place.
Initial reports after the incident had said that the plane plunged 5,000 feet, but investigations showed that it fell 2,251 feet before corrective measures were taken. The reports had also said that the co-pilot was busy using a tablet computer, called an electronic flight bag by airlines, but the DGCA report has no mention of it.
The final-investigation report by Sanjay Bramhane, DGCA's deputy director for air safety (western region), states that the flight started to lose altitude after the co-pilot accidentally changed controls while working on some other settings.

Air Seychelles schedules more flights to Mumbai and Mauritius

More visitors are likely to walk the sandy white beaches of Seychelles next year as the island nation’s airline expands services to regional destinations.
Air Seychelles will expand its regional flights to both Mumbai, India and Mauritius, two cities the airline already serves.
Currently Air Seychelles flies to Mumbai on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. A new daily flight will be added on Thursdays as of late January. Air Seychelles currently flies to Mauritius on Tuesday, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The new Thursday flights will begin in early February.
Air Seychelles, the national airline of the 115-island archipelago, is introducing the new flights to accommodate the growing traffic between the two regional centres and Seychelles.
The chairman of Air Seychelles, Joel Morgan, said the additional services means Seychelles is expanding as a regional hub.
“Since the launch of the nonstop services to Mumbai and Mauritius, Air Seychelles has continued to enhance its travel offering and build on its operation,” Morgan, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Transport, said in an announcement last week.

GoAir explores Kuwait, Tehran routes for international foray

GoAir is evaluating destinations such as Kuwait, Male (Maldives) and Tehran for its planned international foray next year.

According to sources, the airline is looking at limited international operations from Mumbai and Delhi in the next summer schedule when its inducts its 20th aircraft.

At present, GoAir has 19 Airbus A320 aircraft. It has also ordered 72 A320neo, which will be added to the fleet when deliveries start next year. It has had the slowest fleet growth among its peers with an average addition of two planes a year. It has been unable to launch international flights till now because the rules require airlines to be in operation for five years and to possess 20 aircraft in their fleet for overseas flights.

GoAir did not respond to an e-mail query on the topic.

Last month, the airline's chief executive, Wolfgang Prock Schauer, had told Business Standard: "We are looking at starting overseas operations after we become eligible next year. We are still evaluating routes. It will not be a large-scale operation. Our goal is to run a profitable airline."

GoAir expects to receive its first Airbus A320neo plane next May, but delay is likely considering postponement in deliveries to the first two customers - Qatar Airways and IndiGo. Airbus is expected to inform GoAir about its delivery schedule next month and there is a possibility of the airline leasing an aircraft to add extra capacity.

AIR INDIA PLANS TO LAUNCH DIRECT FLIGHTS TO WASHINGTON

Air India is planning to launch a direct flight to Washington apart from connecting few more US cities in coming months. “I have been informed that Air India is considering a flight between India and Washington DC. Air India is also actively pursuing to connect more cities directly from India to United States,” Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Civil Aviation Minister said at a function organised by Air India, San Francisco Travel Association and San Francisco International Airport prior to the launch of its direct flight to San Francisco from December 2. The direct Delhi-San Francisco flight is one of the longest with duration of close to 17 hours. Air India will operate B77-200LR plane to San Francisco. “This new flight will be a boon for the Indian diaspora in the US West Coast, making travel easy and convenient for students,” the carrier said in a release. The flight to San Francisco leaves Delhi on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday while the return service is on Thursday, Saturday and Monday. “The return flight from San Francisco will provide onward connections to cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Pune and Bhubaneswar,” the release said.

Air India already operates non-stop flights to three US cities — New York, Newark and Chicago. The carrier also had flights to Los Angeles in California, which was discontinued before the merger of Indian Airlines with Air India in 2011.

20 moree students stopped at Chicago Airport, being deported

Hyderabad: Another 20 US-bound Telugu students were stopped at Chicago airport by the immigration officials on Sunday.
They are being sent back to India. The students were heading to a university in Chicago after securing admission through consultants in Hyderabad. Due to the immigration problem that arose last week for the first time nearly 100 students were already sent back. Mostly students from Telugu states are facing immigration rejection problem as they lack basic skills to answer the queries by officials after landing in the US, according to reports.
The External Affairs Ministry has recently issued a notice to aspiring US students to postpone their travel until the issue is resolved. However, the students who already booked their tickets and whose semesters are starting are leaving without taking the government's warning seriously.
Some students are said to have failed to answer the queries at immigration, especially their grilling on part-time jobs. A recent FBI report had cautioned the government against the entry of Indian students in huge numbers stating that they are not coming for studies, but only to do odd jobs. It resulted in a stricter immigration scrutiny.

Government for level playing field for domestic and Gulf carriers

NEW DELHI: With Gulf carriers garnering a significant chunk of outbound passenger traffic from India, the government is mulling ways to put in place mechanisms to prevent overseas airlines from virtually making local airports their regional hubs.

The basic idea is to ensure that domestic airlines have a competitive as well as level playing field with their foreign counterparts, especially since Indian aviation market has a huge growth potential, according to a senior Civil Aviation Ministry official.

Etihad, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air Arabia, and Flydubai are among the major Gulf carries having operations in India. Of these, while Doha-based Qatar Airways flies to 13 Indian cities, Emirates flies to 10 key airports via its Abu Dubai hub.

Etihad, which holds 24 per cent stake in domestic carrier Jet Airways, also connects its Abu Dhabi hub with 10 cities here including Delhi and Mumbai.

With the revised draft civil aviation policy in advanced stages of finalisation, the Ministry is also looking at ways to address various issues pertaining to the local carriers.

Foreign carriers may not get landing rights on demand, says Civil Aviation Ministry

Some foreign carriers pitch for more landing points as well as higher number of seats but at times allowing such requests could hurt domestic carriers, said a senior official from the Civil Aviation Ministry.

Signalling a major shift in granting air traffic rights, the government is looking at restricting the number of landing points for overseas airlines irrespective of their seat entitlements.

The thinking on these lines comes against the backdrop of Gulf carriers cornering a large chunk of international air traffic from India because of having landing rights across a number of airports in the country.

A senior Civil Aviation Ministry official said it was looking at restricting the ports of call given to foreign airlines under bilateral rights, while remaining flexible on seat entitlements.

Some foreign carriers pitch for more landing points as well as higher number of seats but at times allowing such requests could hurt domestic carriers, the official said.

"There should be a balance between the interests of passengers and the interests of Indian carriers," he said, adding, at present, the balance seems to be tilted towards overseas airlines.

India grants over $240k to setup aviation facilities in Maldives

At a ceremony held at the army headquarters in capital Male Sunday afternoon, Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Rajeev Shahare handed over the cheque, which was received by Maldivian defence minister Adam Shareef.

India had donated two utility helicopters to the Maldives in 2010. Both the choppers are operated out of the domestic airport in the southern island of Kahdhoo in Laamu atoll.

In a statement, the Indian high commission in Male said the grant would be used to fund the construction of a hanger at the Kahdhoo airport and develop other facilities necessary for the operation and maintenance of the helicopters.

The donation by India follows intensified efforts by both the Maldives and India to improve relations. In the latest such development, an Indian navy ship arrived in Maldives last week and conducted Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance for two days along with the Maldivian Coast Guard.

India’s move to dispatch a navy vessel to the Maldives came after the Maldivian president had on December 8 hailed the foreign policy of its closest neighbour and ally.

In his message on this year’s SAARC Charter Day, the president said foreign policies of SAARC member states should prioritise improving relations with its neighbours. Such an approach, according to the president, is important for a peaceful region, which he said is integral to ensuring peaceful nations.

Gulf aviation academy receives DGCA approval on Airbus A320 FFS

Being one of the few institutes that have gained this approval in the Indian region, this achievement will attract A320 airline operators and individuals based in India to commence their training at GAA.

Captain Dhaffer Al Abbasi, Chief Executive Officer, of GAA stated "Gulf Aviation Academy is positioning itself in India's aviation market as a credible training partner and is looking forward to support the growing demand of airlines in that region". Penetrating the South Asian market at this stage and building a trust worthy relationship between the academy and the authorities aligns with GAA's strategic plan in forming international connections to better serve a wider range of clients. Known for customizing its training according to the needs of the clients, Captain Al Abbasi was confident that this will be beneficial for both the region and the company as GAA will ensure that the airlines training requirements are met. In August 2014 last year, GAA has received its first approval to conduct Flight Crew Training and evaluation for Indian based EMB 170/190 operators.

Delta Air Lines and KLM partner with Indian air carrier

Jet Airways is India's second largest airline with more than 300 flights a day travelling to 74 destinations.
With this reach, it's no wonder that other airlines would want to do business with it. And this week, U.S.-based Delta Air Lines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced a code-share agreement with Jet Airways, which is a big deal in the aviation world.

It enables Delta and KLM passengers flying from Europe and the United States to connect to Jet Airways daily flights from Amsterdam to New Delhi and Mumbai. From there, they can reach many Indian cities, including Chennai, Goa, Amritsar, and Hyderabad, as well as Dhaka in Bangladesh, Kathmandu in Nepal, and Colombo in Sri Lanka.

"Delta and KLM codeshare on these Jet Airways routes will provide customers with coordinated customer service, a single ticket and through-check in of bags to their final destinations," the three airlines said in a statement. "Delta SkyMiles and KLM Flying Blue members will be eligible to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles on codeshare routes operated by Jet."

India has the fastest growing aviation market in the world, accorrding to the International Air Transport Association.

Indian context drives Delta’s new KLM-Jet partnership

SkyTeam carriers Delta and KLM announced a new codeshare arrangement with Jet Airways that will see the Indian carrier trade Amsterdam for Brussels as its European hub and cease its service to Newark. Delta and KLM flights to North America will have Jet Airways codes added to them, as will KLM’s existing service to Delhi which currently carries a Delta codeshare.

The new setup will result in one-stop service to Delhi and Mumbai from 11 North American cities under the cross-codeshare agreement. Jet will provide further connections from these gateway cities to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Kolkata and Amritsar, plus Kathmandu, Colombo and Dhaka.

On the US side, New York-JFK, Newark, Chicago, Washington DC, Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Edmonton are included. It’s unclear why most of Delta’s largest hubs — Atlanta, Minneapolis, Salt Lake, Detroit, Seattle — and thus its largest markets, are missing from the deal.

Jet also receives codeshares with KLM to a number of European destinations.

The margins for ultra-longhaul flying are thin and complex. That’s particularly true in the Indian market, in which security, political, efficiency, capacity and flag-carrier issues swirl murkily, and where Delta has not been reluctant to stir the pot.

Following Delta’s October cancellation of the ultra-longhaul Atlanta-Dubai route, the airline responded publicly to Air Transport World Editor-in-Chief Karen Walker’s column that questioned Delta’s true motives for canceling the route. Delta blamed the ME3 for the failure of its non-stop services to Mumbai. That route, operated at different times from New York and Atlanta, existed for fewer than three years, and was cancelled more than six years ago.

Centre rejects Fly Dubai plea to operate from Bhubaneswar

The Centre has rejected a proposal of Fly Dubai, a designated carrier of UAE (Dubai) to start operation from Bhubaneswar international airport.
International flight operation is dependent on the bilateral agreements between the government of India and government of foreign countries and issue of traffic rights by the union civil aviation ministry.
Fly Dubai of UAE (Dubai) had approached the Indian Aviation ministry to allow it commence operations from Bhubaneswar. The request of Fly Dubai was, however, not acceded to by the Indian authorities as the proposal was not made through the UAE civil aviation authority.
Interestingly, no Indian carrier had shown its interest to start international operations from Bhubaneswar.
A meeting with the representatives of Indian scheduled carriers was held in the aviation ministry November 26 in which it emerged that traffic potential available from Bhubaneswar is not enough to establish the viability of a direct international flight from Bhubaneswar.

After 6 hrs of delay, IndiGo flight makes night landing

With over six hours of delay, the inbound flight (IndiGo airlines 6E 605) from Delhi via Kolkata landed at Dimapur airport around 8.45 p.m. on Saturday. Talking to Nagaland Post over phone, a passenger stranded at Kolkata said that the passengers had a harrowing time at Kolkata.
“We were informed that the flight was delayed due to technical problems. However, later we were asked to board the flight and were stuck inside the aircraft for over 2 hours,” the passengers said. The Dimapur bound passengers were then asked to deplane and was informed that the flight may be cancelled. It was only after much hue and cry that the airlines agreed to arrange an alternate flight, the passenger said. “We were aware that the Dimapur airport had night-landing facilities, and the authorities could not dodge the fact that an aeroplane could land”, the passenger said.
Meanwhile, AAI Dimapur airport director, Mughavi Zhimo in a positive note said it was a historic day that a scheduled flight (6E 605) could land at night. In a statement, Zhimo said “Dimapur airport has handled lots of non-scheduled flights at night in the past but this is the first time in the recorded history of Dimapur airport of a scheduled flight making night landing at Dimapur airport”

Eyes on Dubai: SpiceJet’s turnaround

Dubai: A year after grounding its fleet and leaving thousands of passengers stranded because it was unable to pay its bills, Indian budget carrier SpiceJet is on the eve of a huge aircraft order and mapping out plans for its internationally-based hub.

SpiceJet will place an order for 100 single-aisle jets from either Airbus or Boeing and a further 50 smaller regional type aircraft from either Brazil’s Embraer, Canada’s Bombardier or France’s ATR — a joint venture between Airbus and Finmeccanica.

The orders will be posted before March 31, 2016, Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet, said in Dubai last month but also touted it could be finalised this month.

Speaking to reporters in Dubai on November 29, Singh also made it clear he wants his airline carrying passengers from India to Dubai and beyond.

While many airlines already fly through Dubai using fifth freedom rights, which allow carriers to fly between foreign countries as long as the flight starts or end in its own country, Singh wants a permanent base here. Something no foreign airline has done since Kuwait budget airline Jazeera Airways was asked to leave before government-owned flydubai starting operations 2009.

Congress questions Centre giving airport MoU to Singapore firm

New Delhi: Congress Party leader Ahmed Patel today charged the BJP-led NDA Government of by passing due process and abruptly selecting a Singapore-based operator to manage the airports at Ahmedabad and Jaipur, instead of retaining the responsibility with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

In a letter to Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju, Patel, who is also the political secretary to party president Sonia Gandhi, said he was surprised by the government’s decision to hand over the operations and management of the above two airports to Changi Airport International vide a Memorandum of Understanding with the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise.

Questioning the government’s decision to abruptly cancel the entire process of competitive bidding for the operation, management and development of the airports at Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chennai and Kolkata, Patel said, “India’s policy on airport infrastructure has encouraged an open, consultative and competitive model of public-private partnership which protects the interests of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and at the same time, promotes private particpation.”

“Hence, I find it surprising that without any explicit change in policy, the government has bypassed due process and has abruptly selected an operator to manage two of India’s most important airports.”

Boeing expects 777X orders from India in 2-3 years

Singapore: Boeing says Indian carriers will not be “at the front end of the programme” for its 777X, but expects discussions for the type to feature more prominently in two to three years.

Speaking to Flightglobal, Dinesh Keskar, senior vice-president of sales in Asia Pacific and India, says this is because the country’s only two widebody operators still have relatively young Boeing 777-300ERs in their fleets.

Air India for instance has 12 -300ERs in service, averaging at six years old. It also has another three of the type on order, Flightglobal’s Fleets Analyzer shows.

Jet Airways meanwhile has four -300ERs averaging at eight years old in operation, and another five of the type on lease to Etihad Airways.

US to help India develop engine for Gen-5 fighter

On Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar's first official visit to the United States from December 7-10, Washington has signalled its willingness to co-develop with India an aircraft engine for India's indigenous fifth-generation fighter that is called the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

India's Defence R&D Organisation (DRDO) believes it essential to work with US company General Electric Aviation (GE) in up-rating its F-414S6 engine into the so-called F-414 Enhanced Engine, which would power the futuristic AMCA.

As Business Standard reported earlier (June 1, "Carter to face Indian demand for engine technology"), GE has been eager to partner DRDO in this lucrative project. But the US government had earlier stood in the way, reluctant to transfer to India strategic technologies, such as the high-melting-point alloys needed to build the gas turbine.

During Parrikar's visit, Washington signalled that it has changed its mind. "Secretary (of Defense Ashton) Carter informed Minister Parrikar that in light of the strengthening relationship between the United States and India, the (US Department of Defense) has updated its policy on gas turbine engine technology transfer to India. As a result of this policy update, the Secretary is confident that the United States will be able to expand cooperation in production and design of jet engine components," says the joint statement issued on Friday by the Indian Embassy in Washington

India-Romania direct flights likely to be resumed soon

Attempts are on to resume direct flights between India and Romania, Radu Octavian Dobre, Charge D'Affaires & Acting Ambassador of the Embassy of Romania in India, said here on Tuesday.

Tigerair connects UP passengers to Singapore and beyond

Singapore-based budget carrier, Tigerair, that has just launched direct flights between Lucknow and Singapore is looking at providing hassle-free connectivity to passengers from Uttar Pradesh to Singapore and other international destinations. Speaking to Express TravelWorld, Teh Yik Chuan, director, sales and marketing, Tigerair said, “After establishing our base in south, we were keen on expanding our network in India due to the tremendous potential and opportunities available in the Indian aviation market. We studied the potential and the demand across various markets in India and arrived at the decision that Lucknow is a relatively untapped market with immense travel demand.” According to Chuan, choosing Lucknow as the next destination is a win-win for the airline as well as for the travellers from UP. “Moreover, we are the first airline to launch direct service between the two destinations, which will ensure hassle-free travel to them instead of travelling to nearest metro,” he added.

The top priority for the airline, mentioned Chuan, is to firmly establish its footprint in Lucknow-Singapore market and also further strengthen its presence in other existing markets – Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Tiruchirappalli and Kochi. “We have also expanded our network across Asia Pacific such that Indian passengers can also take advantage of our expanding network. Currently Tigerair connects to over 39 destinations across 12 countries in Asia Pacific. After transiting in Singapore, they can connect to popular destinations such as Sydney, Bali, Hong Kong etc. either with Tigerair or one of our interline partners such as Scoot,” said Chuan.

Singapore’s Changi to be first foreign company to manage an Indian airport

GUWAHATI: The operator of Singapore's Changi Airport is set to become the first foreign company to manage an Indian airport, with the state-run Airports Authority of India signing an initial agreement with it to hand over the contracts for Ahmedabad and Jaipur.

"This was signed in the last week of November, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Singapore," AAI chairman RK Srivastava told ET on the sidelines of an event in Guwahati. It was a government-to-government decision and there was no bidding for the contract, he said. Details of the contract, such as the tenure and financial terms, are yet to be finalised, he said. Changi Airport International didn't immediately respond to an email sent late on Tuesday seeking comment.

The tie-up shows increasing global interest in Indian airports, fast modernisation of which is crucial to sustain growth of air travel demand.

India outpaced all others in domestic air traffic growth in October, recently released International Air Transport Association data showed, signalling the return of momentum to a market that was in doldrums during 2012 and 2013.

Air India tragedy a family crisis that inspired his career, Oakville high school hears

Oakville Beaver: Susheel Gupta was only 12 years old when his mother died in the bombing of Air India Flight 182 in 1985 — considered to be the largest mass murder in Canadian history.

On Wednesday, Nov. 25, the vice-chair of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) and former federal prosecutor, shared the story of the incident at Oakville’s Abbey Park High School (APHS), noting how it led him to become a lawyer.

Gupta was the keynote speaker at the APHS Legal Eagles’ third annual Youth in Law and Justice Evening, which also featured a question-and-answer panel session with Gupta and three others from various law-related professions.

Other panelists included: Halton Regional Police Deputy Chief Carol Crowe, Marcia Oliver, a Wilfrid Laurier University law and society assistant professor and lawyer Nicholas Fur.

The Legal Eagles started three years ago with the help of former students Kristi Meta and Jude Haj Ali, and is a year-round, extracurricular, 30-member group that runs weekly meetings to debate current events and work on multiple projects.

On June 23, 1985, a detonation on Air India Flight 182 caused the plane to crash into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland. The plane was en route to New Delhi from Montreal and the blast killed all 329 passengers, mostly Canadians, including Gupta’s mother.

“I woke up to the sound of our home phone ringing at about 6:35 a.m. Within minutes, my father told my big brother and I that our mother was gone. Her plane crashed and she was dead. The sound of my father’s pain still echoes in my ears today,” said Gupta.

UN-backed team in city to check security preparedness at airport

A United Nations-backed aviation regulator team is in Mumbai to inspect preparedness of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) at the city airport. The team will next head to Kolkata for the same.

Sources said the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) team is accompanied by AK Bhardwaj, deputy director, Air Space and Air Traffic Management, DGCA, apart from officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and other departments. After visiting the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Complex, which houses most of the air navigation system infrastructure near Sahar in Andheri (East), the audit team went to the new ATC tower, also called as Sky Tower, outside domestic terminal (1B) in Vile Parle. "The ICAO team is expected at the CSIA terminal and aircraft operation area on Tuesday," confirmed a CSIA official.

According to airport sources, the team inspected the Safety Management System and held a one-to-one conversation with the personnel working on it. "The ICAO officials seemed strict and insisted that only the one being questioned answer and no one else. The others, including senior officials, who were not required to be present, were asked to keep out until called," said a senior airport insider.

This is the second audit of India's aviation safety oversight this year, with the first being carried by American watchdog Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in April, thereby restoring the country's safety rating (which it had earlier downgraded). The ICAO audit, which is generally more comprehensive, looks into parameters such as legislation, organisation, licensing, operation, airworthiness, accident investigation, air navigation and aerodromes of the DGCA.

Pink City may get direct flights to Japan, S'pore from next year

JAIPUR: Here is a piece of good news for passengers wishing to get a direct connectivity to international destinations from Jaipur. With the completion of runway extension work, the Jaipur airport is likely to get direct flights to Singapore and Japan from next year.

Not only this, from February onwards, the aircraft can also expect smoother landing with the completion of CAT-III lighting work at the airport.

As the Airport Authority of India officials have already completed the runway extension work and are awaiting the final approval from Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), various operators have started coming to Jaipur to look for logistic support and other facilities.

A delegation of Scoot Airlines, which is a Singapore-based low-fare airline, arrived in Jaipur on Monday. It was in touch with the authorities to look for the arrangements and other logistic support. "They are likely to announce a flight from Jaipur to Singapore and for that they will first have to apply to DGCA. Before that, they are looking for various aspects and logistics at the Jaipur airport," said an officer with the AAI, Jaipur, on Monday.

Aviation sources said that a foreign-based airline had also shown interest in having a separate flight to countries like Japan. "The passenger load from Delhi to Japan is already very high and the trend shows that many people from Rajasthan, mainly jewellers, are frequent travellers to Japan for their business. Thus, this is another possible route which can open," said an officer.

Qatar Airways doubles capacity on Kolkata sector with bigger plane

Kolkata: With no direct flights to Europe from Kolkata, Qatar Airways has seized the opportunity and deployed a bigger aircraft to fly passengers to Doha and onward to Europe and the US.

From Wednesday, the airline replaced the Airbus A320 aircraft on the sector with the Boeing B787 Dreamliner, nearly doubling the capacity from 144 seats to 254 seats. Apart from Kolkata, Delhi is the only other market that Qatar services with a Dreamliner. The airline operates a larger B777 aircraft to Mumbai and Bengaluru. Amritsar, Kochi, Trivandrum, Kozhikode and Goa are serviced by A320. Chennai is the only city that has an A340. The airline flies to 13 cities in India.

Qatar Airways vice-president Ihab Sorial said the deployment of the state-of-the-art Dreamliner to Kolkata was reflective of the market's potential. Though the airline has been operating to the cities in Kerala and Hyderabad for over a decade and a half unlike Kolkata where services started only in 2011, these cities are still serviced by the narrow-body A320 aircraft.

More Proof that the Three Big Gulf Airlines Get Massive Subsidies

"Prove it" is a phrase we learn from an early age. For most of this year, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and seven aviation trade unions have worked hard to prove that massive government subsidies are what have enabled the three fast-growing, Gulf-based airlines - Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways - to expand in the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere. The proof is real: $42 billion in cash and unfair benefits in the past decade. And that huge government largesse violates the "Open Skies" aviation agreements that their governments signed with the U.S., pacts that prohibit subsidies and mandate a level competitive playing field.

The U.S. airlines' effort to "prove it" gained yet more momentum this week with the release of a new study by the respected transportation research firm GRA, which concluded that "of the 23 routes operated by the Gulf carriers to the United States in CY [calendar year] 2014, 19 appear to have lost money . . . The overall loss margin for the three carriers combined is -14.4 percent." The authors continued, "These findings make their [the three Gulf carriers] planned rapid growth in U.S. markets puzzling." That's so polite. To me, there's no puzzle: wheelbarrows of government subsidy cash make all this growth possible. No real airline, accountable to private investors and lenders, could grow that imprudently.

Keeping with the theme of "prove it," it's entirely fair for you to ask "how did they figure this out?" For aviation pros, it's a relatively easy bit of homework, for two main reasons. First, as a vestige of decades of Federal economic regulation, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all airlines, domestic and foreign, to periodically submit passenger volumes (traffic) and revenue information (and additionally requires U.S. carriers to send a range of cost data). These data are, in general, publicly available; access restrictions apply to some sensitive data.

Second, airline financial information is easy to model - many expense calculations are a function of distance, for example. In the 22 years that I worked at American Airlines, we routinely used this public data to project competitors' route profits or losses as part of periodic comparative reviews of financial performance. Indeed, my finance-department colleagues could, solely with publicly-available data, model another airline's entire income statement with astonishing accuracy, something much less possible in other industries.

In this case, the study authors used the traffic and revenue statistics that Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways provided (what the DOT calls T-100 data), combining passenger, cargo, and other revenue (like excess baggage fees). And the authors were careful to assign revenues - using established industry protocols - to the U.S.-Gulf flights by taking a prorated share of a connecting itinerary. For example, two-thirds of Qatar Airways' passengers from the U.S. are bound for 11 cities in India, so the authors allocated to their Miami-Doha route a prorated share of revenue on a Miami-Doha-Mumbai ticket. On the cost side, only Emirates publishes numbers that were deemed "reliable," so the authors used Emirates data to calculate costs for Etihad and Qatar Airways.

Lufthansa welcomes open skies policy

Mumbai: Foreign airlines have welcomed the civil aviation ministry's open-sky proposal to encourage more flights to India.

In its draft civil aviation policy, the ministry has proposed open skies in a phased manner, with plans for reciprocal agreements with countries in South Asia and those beyond 5,000 km in the first phase.
This would allow European carriers to expand their network and frequencies in India and enable them to compete with the Gulf carriers which have emerged as a strong competiton in the last few years.

"We welcome the announcement by the civil aviation ministry regarding open sky policy. These steps will provide the right kind of boost to the domestic sector which will eventually drive the larger aviation eco-system in India. We believe that an open sky policy will encourage a healthy and competitive environment for the industry, something we have always advocated for the overall growth of the industry," said Wolfgang Will, Director (South Asia), Lufthansa.
