Airport villagers likely to boycott Lok Sabha polls

Meetings are currently on between villagers of the six villages opposing the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) rehabilitation package, to take a call on boycotting the Lok Sabha elections. "We have no hope from the politicians. After the delimitation exercise in 2009, the Maval constituency came into existence and we have a Member of Parliament from the ghat region [referring to Pune's Pimpri-Chinchwad area] who has not shown any interest here nor has dealt with us to understand our problems and demands with regards to the airport project," said Mahendra Patil, who is representing villagers opposing the airport deal.
He added, "Internal discussions are on at present and we may boycott the upcoming polls, since no one has bothered to provide us good leadership. Same is the case for our MLAs – be it from Panvel or Uran - as even they have not supported us."
Navi Mumbai Antarrashtriya Vimantal Sangharash Samiti – a committee of six villages opposing the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) rehabilitation package – comprises professionals from these villages. The latter have taken up the matter with Cidco and the state government under the guidance of former Supreme Court judge Justice PB Sawant and former Bombay High Court judge BG Kolse-Patil.

DIG's driver takes IGI airport authorities for a ride

New Delhi: Security arrangements in the Capital's IGI Airport seem to be in tatters. After a teen made a mockery of the security system last week as reported by Mail Today , it was the turn of the Chief Airport Security Officer's driver to flout norms and go on a free- wheeling drive inside the restricted area of the airport.
The driver not only intruded into the airport in the CISF DIG's official car but also drove into the apron area, where aircraft are parked, without valid documents, just to take a shortcut to reach the officer's residence.
The driver, a private employee, kept on driving until accosted by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) security personnel.
On being questioned, the driver made the surprising revelation that he was using the airside area as a shortcut to reach the DIG's house.
Valid documents like an Airport Entry Pass and Airport Driving Permit are mandatory to drive inside the highsecurity IGI airport.

Ranchi's double treat for flyers, airlines

Ranchi:  The state civil aviation department on Saturday slashed 16% sales tax on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prompting the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to announce that it would make night parking of aircraft free at Birsa Munda Airport here. The double bonanza for the fliers and the airlines, coming within a week of inauguration of the new terminal, is likely to increase number of passengers and flights in the city.
Ranchi probably becomes the first airport in the country where free night halt facility has been made.
The huge tax the state will now charge 4% tax on ATF has taken a toll on the number of flights at the Ranchi airport. Towards the end of 2011, a total of 16 flights operated from the city for various destinations. The lack of free night parking facility and highly taxed ATF took a toll on the number of flights here. Currently, eight flights operate from Ranchi connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Patna and Mumbai. Surprisingly, there is no flight to Delhi in the morning. Air India's flight is the first flight for the national capital at 1.30pm.

Surat-Bhavnagar flight service discontinued

Surat: Deccan Charters Limited (DCL) has called off its flight service on Surat-Bhavnagar route due to increased cost of operations and want of passenger traffic.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) authorities said DCL submitted an official letter on Friday intimating that it wanted to terminate the Surat-Bhavnagar operations with effect from March 31 and that it wished to surrender the office space and other facilities at Surat airport.
Diamantaires in world's biggest diamond cutting and polishing centre in Surat seem to have been a big disappointment for DCL. The airline company, operating shuttle services between Surat and Bhavnagar five days a week, was not able to break even due to want of traffic.
Anticipating good amount of traffic due to presence of diamantaires hailing from Bhavnagar and diamond cutting and polishing job work going there from Surat, DCL had included Bhavnagar in its intra-state flight service operations in August 2012. In just a few months of connecting Surat with Bhavnagar, the company started facing problems as far as passenger traffic was concerned.

No doctor for ill flier at airport's new terminal

Kolkata: A plane carrying an ailing passenger requiring immediate medical attention landed at Kolkata airport on Saturday morning only to find no doctors on call. Though the airport has a team of doctors on its payroll and has a duty roster to ensure they are available round-the-clock, airport officials said they could not reach the patient on time as they are housed in the old terminal. There is no medical unit in the swanky new facility that was commissioned earlier this month.
Basant Kumar Raut, 60, on board Air India's morning Delhi-Kolkata flight AI 401 complained of suffocation and breathlessness midair. Following an announcement, a lady doctor on board came to his help. The pilot, meanwhile, radioed Kolkata ATC and sought priority landing. Accordingly, other flights were put on hold and the plane allowed to land without delay. After touching down at 8.51 am, it taxied to an aerobridge at the new terminal and the pilot requested passengers to remain seated so that a doctor could board the plane and attend to Raut and wheel him out if needed.
But there were no signs of a physician for several minutes and the cabin crew asked passengers to disembark. That is when CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta, who was on the flight, stepped in. He urged all passengers to remain seated till the patient was attended upon. Though many passengers were in a hurry to leave, a majority readily agreed to stay put in the aircraft. When 15 minutes passed without a doctor in sight, worried Air India officials approached the MP and explained that if they did not disembark on time, the return flight would get delayed. Dasgupta, a known champion of public sector units, realized his stand would have an adverse affect on the airline's performance and agreed to vacate the aircraft.

Passenger held with over 1,000 Air India boarding passes at Kolkata airport

Kolkata: Over 1,000 Air India boarding passes were recovered from a passenger at the Kolkata airport on Friday. The recovery triggered alarm bells in security circles as boarding passes are critical documents that allow passengers access areas usually out of bounds to anyone other than genuine airport users.
The passes were recovered after a SpiceJet security staffer manning a baggage X-ray monitor became suspicious after he discovered a box in Satyendra Verma's bag that appeared to be full of currency notes.
There is no restriction on carrying money other than during the election time. But the official decided to check the bag, leading to the recovery. The passes were all blank without any details printed at the check-in counter and printed in Mumbai. All the passes appeared to be original. Verma (42), a Nalanda resident, told his interrogators that his brother-in-law had given him the box and he was clueless about what it contained. "I was asked to carry the box and hand it over to another man at the Port Blair airport," said Verma. He had arrived from Bihar's Nalanda district a day earlier to catch a flight to Port Blair.

DIAL plans to shift IndiGo or SpiceJet to T3

Delhi International Airport Ltd or DIAL, the company that operates the Delhi airport, plans to shift either IndiGo or SpiceJet to Terminal 3 and ease pressure at Terminal 1D.
T1D, which has an annual capacity of 12 million passengers, is expected to cater to around 11 million passengers in the current fiscal that is to end in two days.
"Among the two, we would prefer IndiGo because it has all jet operations through Airbus 320s and can be serviced through aerobridges. Spicejet, on the other hand, operates Bombadier Q400s and these planes cannot be serviced through aerobridges," said a GMR official.
He added that they are not considering shifting GoAir, as it is a small carrier and shifting it will not free much space in the terminal.

SIA eyes untapped airports to expand base in India

Mumbai: Having successfully connected Visakhapatnam to Singapore through its 100 per cent subsidiary, SilkAir, Singapore International Airlines (SIA) is now looking for similar untapped locations to expand its footprint in India.
Though the airline has exhausted its seat entitlements from India, it is identifying virgin markets which could be connected later on.
“When we launched flights to Visakhapatnam last year, many people asked us why? Even most Indians have not been to Visakhapatnam. But when we did a study, we found out that the city V has three to four million people staying in 100 kms radius, and the area has significant business. But the airport has no direct international flight to anywhere. There was one flight to Dubai via Hyderabad. So we decided to connect it with Singapore,,” said G. M. Ahmedabad turns parking bay for private jets

Ahmedabad: After landing at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad one might just get a feeling that this is a city of billionaires. What else does a long queue of neatly parked private jets mean?
But, much of this is a spill-over from the Maximum City. Heavy congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai is forcing the richie rich to park their flying machines in Ahmedabad. The low parking charge in Ahmedabad — a mere one-third of Mumbai — is a plus.
There are about 20 private jets and choppers parked at Ahmedabad airport. Of these, only five are owned by local business groups Adani and Zydus Cadila.

New rule for passengers arriving in U.S.

Washington: The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Wednesday published new rule for passengers arriving in the U.S. – the standard Form I-94, which serves as the arrival and departure record and is stapled to passengers’ passports, will soon be automated and in electronic form only.
From April 26, 2013, Form I-94, which essentially provides “non-immigrants” with evidence that they have been lawfully admitted to the U.S., will no longer be in paper form and hence obviates the need to complete this paperwork prior to landing at a U.S. airport or seaport, according to a CBP notification.
The CBP however clarified that individuals who go through “secondary inspection,” which is a closer examination of personal effects and travel circumstances, “will be provided a paper copy of Form I-94 by a CBP officer.” This would apply to such as asylees, refugees, and parolees, as typical examples. This change, which is an “interim final rule,” in the arrivals procedures, is aimed at streamlining the admissions process for non-immigrants arriving in the U.S.

""Take Kangra, it does not have a fuelling facility. Somebody flying from Delhi has to carry the fuel from the national capital to be able to come back. This unnecessarily disturbs the economics. The other objective is that less space is occupied by oil companies otherwise everybody duplicates. We will create sufficient capacity so that everybody puts their oil in it," he said.

Kannur airport: uncertainty looms large over compensation

Kannur: Even as an Expert Appraisal Committee of the Ministry of Environment has recommended environmental clearance for the proposed Kannur airport and steps for the third phase of land acquisition are nearing completion, uncertainty looms large over fixing the compensation for civil structures.
During the second phase of land acquisition, the value of buildings was assessed on the basis of Public Works Department (PWD) rates in 2008-09.
When the rates for the third phase were finalised in 2011, an 18 per cent appreciation in the rates was recommended.
Meanwhile, a letter was forwarded by the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA) in early 2011 to the Transport Secretary to fix the price for buildings and houses according to the PWD rates in 2010.
However, a government order is yet to be passed, and the 2008 prices prevail.

Break-in exposes safety loopholes at airport

Mumbai:  The three brothers who tried to steal goods worth Rs 64,368 from a duty free shop at the airport late on Saturday, sneaked into the premises hoodwinking security personnel and broke into the maintenance room where they cut off the connection of closed-circuit television cameras of the shop before crawling through the false ceiling all the way to the store's warehouse. One of the accused was caught red-handed in the warehouse, while the two others were picked up on Sunday.
The break-in and the theft bid has raised questions about the security of the airport, especially, when the country is facing terror threats. "This means that a conniving individual can easily get into the airport unnoticed. Security has to be enhanced at all key entry and exit points of the airport. CISF recruitments also have to be expedited so that there is enough personnel to spot and preempt any security breach," said a retired security consultant.

Marginal rise in Pune's air passenger traffic this year

Pune: The Lohegaon airport is likely to witness a marginal rise in the number of passengers flying in and out of the city by the end of this fiscal as compared to last year.
"The airport handled over 33.2 lakh passengers during 2011-12 and the projected passenger traffic by the end of 2012-13 is over 33.49 lakh," airport director P S R K Sudhakar told TOI.
This is a far cry from the kind of air passenger traffic growth that the airport reported during the last few years. The numbers also signal the fact that the airport has touched a near saturation point vis-a-vis capacity to handle air passengers on an annual basis.
The muted growth is also being attributed to Kingfisher Airlines shutting down flights since October last year owing to its financial crisis and the eventual suspension of its licence by the civil aviation regulator. The Vijay Mallya-led airline, which was operating at least nine flights to destinations across the country, was one of the main carriers operating from the city.

Civil aviation minister opens Rs 138cr Birsa Munda integrated terminal, predicts dawn of prosperity

Calcutta: Civil aviation minister Ajit Singh heralded a “new dawn” for Jharkhand’s flagging economy on Sunday by inaugurating the Rs 138-crore integrated terminal at Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi that promises to increase the footfall of high-fliers.
It took four years for the state-of-the-art facility to see the light of day — courtesy hitches at both state and central levels since erstwhile civil aviation minister Praful Patel laid its foundation stone in 2009 — but “the wait has been worth it”.
“The new terminal will contribute to the overall economic development of the region. Fliers, both domestic and international, are on the rise across the country. In 2010-11, there were 142 million fliers. The figure rose to 162 million in 2011-12. So, having state-of-the-art terminals at tier II and III cities have become imperative,” the minister said.
He pointed out that his ministry, in association with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), had been working on massive modernisation and expansion projects across India. “Ranchi airport was a part of it. Though delayed, the wait has been worth it,” he said.

Mihan finally gets cheap power from captive plant

Nagpur: Mihan has finally begun getting electricity from the Abhijeet Group-promoted captive power plant. The cheap power assured through this unit could not reach the special economic zone (SEZ) so far. The plant was supposed to supply power exclusively to Mihan-SEZ at Rs 2.97 a unit-- much lower than the market rates. However, uncertainty remains whether the contracted rate of Rs 2.97 a unit would continue for long.
Abhijeet Group has partnered with Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC)- Mihan's developer- in this venture. The former had insisted on arriving at a new tariff regime to which MADC was not agreeable. For MADC, cheap power was a major sop to attract investors. With the partners finally agreeing, Abhijeet Group has begun supplying power to the units in Mihan since March and a fresh tariff petition has been filed with Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) simultaneously. "Nothing is clear about the rate so far. We have filed a petition to determine the tariff with the MERC," said a source in Abhijeet Group.

Computer outage delays flights

Riyadh: A glitch in the computer network of the Immigration Department caused travel chaos at the two busiest airports of the Kingdom yesterday morning.
The computer outage at Riyadh and Jeddah airports delayed hundreds of travelers and embarrassed several airlines at a time when they are trying to win back customers after prolonged aviation strikes and massive snow storms across Europe that caused several airlines to suspend flights last week.
“In fact, a breakdown in systems at immigration resulted in delayed flights and long waits for inbound and outbound passengers,” said Prabhu Chandran, Air India manager.
“The Air India flight to Calicut was delayed because of the outage,” said Chandran. “We were told that the immigration computer system was down from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Sunday at the Riyadh-based King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) that caused inconvenience to airlines as well to passengers,” said Chandran.

Foreigners' tracking system set up at Cial

Kochi: The Cochin international airport on Friday joined 40 destinations across the country where immigration, visa, foreigner registration and tracking ( IVFRT) system have been activated.
The system provides an elaborate network to monitor the arrival of foreigners and track their movement by roping in hotels and even homestays. Primarily, it envisages keying in the data submitted by foreigners in their disembarkation card to a New Delhi-based central server. The hotels and homestays, where the foreigners stay, will also be given an ID and password to access the server. Saif Ali Khan to sue news agency on false story around airport tiff

Mumbai: Yesterday night, reports started floating around Saif Ali Khan's so-called tiff with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at the Lucknow airport. Apparently, at the airport, he refused to move out of the lounge (which was reserved for the VIPs) and 'tried to throw his weight around'.
However, the actor has been caught totally unaware with the turn of events since the fact was entirely opposite.
Says Saif, "This is totally baseless. There was no tiff of any kind. What has come out as 'news' is in fact totally distorted. It was a polite conversation and nothing as dramatic as what is being put on print actually happened at all."
Instead it was Viveck Anand, Joint General Manager - Operations at the airport, who reached out to Saif immediately after and they spent some together over tea. "We have known each other for 20 years and he is a good friend of mine. We had tea together", adds Saif.

Work stalled at Andal airport site

Andal: The Andal airport project which is already running late has run into rough weather again.
More than 250 share croppers of Arati village under Laudoha - Faridpur panchayat samity stalled work at the Andal airport project site on Thursday to protest against the delay in getting compensation cheques.
The agitators prevented the officials of Bengal Aerotropolis Limited (BAPL) from entering the site. The gherao was withdrawn after Andal police promised to look into the allegations. BAPL officials said the problem will be looked into.
Seikh Mamun, one of the share croppers, alleged that though the land owners had received their compensation cheques years ago, the share croppers were the deprived lot.
"Work for the airport has been going on in full swing. But the authorities are turning a blind eye to our problems. Hence we decided to take the route of agitation. If the problem persists, we will launch a bigger agitation," Sk Mamun, a share cropper, threatened.

Birds hit new airport plan

Mumbai: The much-delayed Navi Mumbai International Airport project suffered a fresh threatthis week, after the environment ministry held back its approval over the impact it could have on the nearby Karnala bird sanctuary and the risk to aircraft from migratory birds.
The wildlife committee of the ministry on Wednesday expressed its reservations about the project, saying that air traffic could disturb the bird sanctuary, which is located just 10 km away.
Karnala is the only bird sanctuary in the Western Ghats and ecologists have been saying that the airport could also affect other wildlife in the region. Cidco, which is the nodal agency for the project, received clearance from the environment ministry two years ago, but it apparently did not mention about the bird sanctuary.
According to the rules, projects planned within a 10 km radius of such protected areas required the approval of the wildlife authorities, which is why the issue was referred to the ministry again. The wildlife committee is expected to visit the site for the airport soon, before arriving at a final decision.

'Repeated' promise on Sahnewal airport fails to excite residents

Ludhiana:  The industry is not too excited and is showing a mixed response to the state government's claim to upgrade the Sahnewal airport to facilitate bigger commercial and cargo planes. The government's recent claim came in its budget document for 2013-14.
While some of the industrialists welcome the announcement, there are many who opine the government had announced this before, but failed to keep its word.
The budget document reads that the length of the runway at Ludhiana airport has to be increased from 4,800ft to 7,500ft to facilitate the landing of bigger Boeing passenger and cargo planes to cater to the needs of the industrial hub. The state government has also mentioned that it is in the process of acquiring 1,827 acre land to set up an integrated aero-city complex consisting cargo and warehouse facilities.

Javed in aircraft for an hour after landing air india

It was a 10 hour and 40 minute long flight from Tokyo to Delhi and JavedAbidi, the director of the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) and a paraplegic, was looking forward to getting back home. However, Abidi had to wait an additional one hour inside the aircraft as the airline sent his wheelchair to the baggage pick-up area inside the terminal and had to have it retrieved.
"As an internationally established rule, if a disabled person is travelling with his or her wheelchair, it should be brought to the aircraft for the passenger to exit on that. I make it a practice to not only inform the airline at the departing station but also before we are to land that I will need my wheelchair. Despite taking all such precautions even this time, Air India sent my wheelchair to the conveyor belt and I was made to wait an hour for it," said Abidi.

Air travel: As small-town Indian soars, men from metros go limp

On air travel small town Indians' have grounded their cosmopolitan cousins and SpiceJet shows way, shows Airports Authority of India. Even as people in big cities are refraining from travelling by air, travellers from smaller cities have shown preference for flying over other modes of travel. The air travel data between April and December of the current fiscal show that smaller airports in the country have registered an increase in the total number of domestic passengers while airports in larger cities are seeing a decline.
Data compiled by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) show that 17 large international airports have registered a decline during the period. Of the 17 airports, six are private airports that include Delhi and Mumbai and have registered the highest decline of 8.6 per cent followed by 11 other international airports that has seen a decline of 4.5 per cent.
Smaller airports’ increase in domestic passengers, however, did not help the overall numbers from falling.

Seat credit system mooted for regional air connectivity

The civil aviation ministry has mooted a carbon credit-like system which will allow airlines to trade seat capacity as a part of its plan to promote regional routes.
“It is an idea. We are discussing it with airlines. If we mandate an airline to fly to the Northeast and it is unable to operate, it would be able to trade seats under this policy. It will be akin to carbon credits,” Minister for Civil Aviation Ajit Singh said while speaking at the Routes Asia conference in Mumbai yesterday.
This carbon credit system is expected to generate greater financial viability for regional operators.
“Instead of scheduled carriers flying half empty A-320 and B-737 aircrafts to small airports to comply with their obligations under Route Dispersal Guidelines (RDG), the same can be done by smaller aircrafts operated by regional air taxi operators.  The regional operators would operate on high seat factors and provide greater frequency of service to smaller locations,” explained Amber Dubey, Partner and Head-Aviation at global consultancy KPMG.
Each available seat-km (ASKM) operated by regional operators can be given one ‘credit’. The credits can then be auctioned off to a national carrier that is ready to pay the highest. This value of the seat credit would be market determined and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) can play an observer’s role.

New airport terminal opens in Chennai on Friday

Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is finally in take-off mode. After copping a jet load of flak by overstepping several deadlines for the new international and domestic terminals and delaying them by two years, AAI will finally open the domestic terminal for arrivals on Friday.
The glitzy structure, which has every facility expected in a world-class airport terminal, is expected to enhance flyer experience exponentially, as passengers using the airport have for long been used to making do with the drab old terminal.
However, AAI officials refused to set a date for opening the international terminal, saying only that it would be opened once all systems are moved from the old domestic terminal to the new one and they are satisfied that operations are streamlined.

Navi Mumbai airport project hits compensation hurdles

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to review the compensation to be paid to acquire the remaining land for the Navi Mumbai airport project, dealing a serious blow to the much-delayed airport's chances of being ready on time. Chief minister PrithvirajChavan told reporters that the Cidco has been asked to suggest whether the package promised to land owners from nearby areas in other projects can also be applied in this case.
Cidco, which is the nodal agency for the project, has acquired about 70% of the land. But it faces difficulty in buying the remaining land due to opposition from land owners who want the compensation to be on par with what Cidco is offering to other project-affected persons in other areas.
Chavan said that Cidco would study whether it can transfer 12.5% of the land acquired from each individual owner to his or her name after development, or provide land elsewhere in the district. "If the land that has to be still acquired needs a different compensation package, the government is willing to rework the package," the chief minister said.

European airports woo Indian carriers

Mumbai: European airports are wooing Indian carriers to start services in the wake of intense competition from  aviation hubs like Dubai or Doha  for a pie of India's international traffic.
According to civil aviation ministry data, 37 million passengers flew to/from India in 2010-11, of which 11.4 million were connected by hubs outside India. Dubai, Doha, Frankfurt, Sharjah and Singapore are the top five aviation hubs preferred by Indian air travellers.
Now airports in Europe including ones in Amsterdam, Dublin, London Gatwick and Munich are luring Indian airlines to start direct services. Representatives from these cities met Air India and Jet Airways executives at the Routes Asia conference in Mumbai over the
last two days.
