Navi Mumbai airport: Aviation NOC requirement opposed

Navi Mumbai: The redevelopment activity in Navi Mumbai has come to a standstill as the aviation department has still not earmarked the funnel area (the area where the aircrafts land or take-off) for the Navi Mumbai airport. This issue was raised by NCP corporator Raju Shinde in the general body (GB) meeting of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation held on Friday. Corporators cutting across party lines supported Shinde.
"The aviation department has made it mandatory to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from them for any redevelopment," Shinde said. He added that the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) should ask the aviation department to demarcate the funnel area for the airport at the earliest.
Even the other corporators raised questions about the need for every construction in the city to obtain an NOC. "One can understand aviation ministry making NOC mandatory for high rises. But making it compulsory for redevelopment of ground plus one structures is ridiculous. The civic body should get it resolved at the earliest," said Vaibhav Gaikwad, NCP corporator from Vashi.

Industry objects to new plan for Coimbatore airport

Coimbatore: With the new plan of Airports Authority of India (AAI) to acquire 1,566 acres for Coimbatore airport expansion under consideration by the state government, industrial associations in the city have urged the central government to stick to the original plan which requires only 613 acres. "The government should opt for the original plan as it is more feasible than attempting to acquire 1,500 acres in a single locality close to the city," said Ravi Sam, vice-chairman of CII Tamil Nadu state council.
He said that only when the airport expansion is completed, the city would be able to keep up with the growing demand. AAI has already written to the state government stating that to cope with future traffic demands there should be parallel runways. According to Ravi Sam, the city needs better air connectivity and any further delay in expansion, would affect growth of the entire Coimbatore region.

HC rejects HDIL plea on Mumbai airport slum clearance contract

The Bombay High Court has rejected an appeal filed by Housing Development and Infrastructure Limited (HDIL) against the court's earlier order upholding termination of the contract between HDIL and Mumbai International Airport Ltd for the airport slum re-development project. The court also imposed a cost of Rs 10 lakh on HDIL for filing the case. MIAL, which won the contract for privatisation of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, had signed an agreement with HDIL in October 2007 to clear slums on the fringe of airport land. The slum-dwellers were to be rehabilitated and the work was to be completed by October 2011. But MIAL terminated the agreement in January 2013, saying not a single slum had been cleared, following which HDIL filed an arbitration petition. The developer blamed change in government policies for the delay, but the court did not accept its plea.

AAI plans to charge lease rental on six airport assets

New Delhi: Six airports that are on the block in the second phase of airport privatisation are likely to pay lease rental for using assets created by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
"These lease rentals will be a fixed charge to be paid monthly and spread over the concession period to recover the cost of construction of the respective airport. We are working to add this clause in the model concession agreement (MCA) that we are compiling," said a senior AAI official, who did not want to be identified.
Airports in Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Lucknow, Guwahati and Ahmedabad are up for privatisation. The AAI's Key Infrastructure Division (KID) is preparing the concession agreement for the award of these airports.
The agreement is being prepared afresh after the civil aviation ministry decided to do away with the Planning Commission's draft of the MCA.

Boost for diamond trade as AAI approves cargo on flights

Surat: Trains have been the conventional mode of transport for angadias to deliver precious diamonds from Surat to Mumbai and other destinations for last many years. This may soon be history as Airport Authority of India (AAI) has approved cargo services on passenger aircraft of SpiceJet from Surat. This would ensure that at least 30 per cent of diamond parcels are delivered in Mumbai in passenger cargo.
Around 30 courier boys employed with 12 angadia firms in the city carry diamonds worth over Rs 500 crore in the night trains namely Gujarat Mail and Saurashtra Express to Mumbai.
Though the courier boys are escorted by railway police and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel in the trains and at the railway stations, the fear of attacks by robbers is always there.
If the angadias are to be believed then the joint raids by the income tax (I-T) department and National Investigation Agency (NIA) in July 2013 have forced the angadias to think of delivering the valuable diamonds through other mode of transports.

Gold worth Rs 3cr seized as intelligence officers take calculated risk

Mumbai:  Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) allowed a smuggler with more than 5 kg of gold to walk out of Jaipur airport on Tuesday to ensure that his gang member, to arrive the next day with a similar quantity of the metal, did not change his plans. The first smuggler was arrested and the other, along with an airport staffer and another person, were detained on Wednesday. The haul stood at 11 kg of gold, worth nearly Rs 3 crore.
The DRI had information that Abdul Arman was to arrive at Jaipur from Dubai on Tuesday with gold. Upon landing, he walked into a toilet as planned and handed over a bag containing the gold to the airport staffer. Arman confirmed the latter's identity with the serial number of a Rs 10 note that acted as a code. Then, after clearing customs and immigration checks, Arman booked himself into a hotel. The staffer walked out of the airport without any checks and handed over the bag to Arman later.
The DRI also had information that another smuggler, Dinesh Naik, was to arrive at Jaipur from Dubai on Wednesday with the same quantity of gold.

Making sense of new airports

Mumbai’s international air traffic is set to more than double in the next decade, mounting enormous pressure on the state government to fast-track the much-delayed second airport project.
While 30.21 million passengers travelling on international routes graced the Mumbai International Airport during 2012-13, the airport has seen 18.28 million international passengers in the first half of this year (April-September), according to data from Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the developers of the airport.
The figure, civil aviation ministry data shows, is set to rise to 40 million by 2015 and 80 million by 2026, making it one of the busiest airports of South Asia.
“Mumbai needs a second airport. It is a critical national issue’, Kapil Kaul, CEO, CAPA (South Asia).
However, the construction of a second international airport, whose first phase was to be operational by 2014, has been delayed due to land acquisition problems.

Lankans as carriers show new trend in gold smuggling

Kochi: The seizure of 10 kg of smuggled gold from 54 Sri Lankans arriving from Colombo at Kochi airport on Sunday indicates that the smuggling racketeers are frequently changing their modus operandi, senior Customs official say.
Because of the series of gold seizures in the recent past from those arriving from Dubai at the three international airports in Kerala, Customs and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials had intensified their scrutiny of passengers from the Gulf sector. This seems to have forced the smugglers to look for airports in other countries and different airlines to dodge the enforcers.
Since all air passengers arriving from Dubai are natural suspects, Colombo is an easy alternative. Dubai-Colombo-Kochi seems to be the least risky smuggling route.

‘New strategic power play uses aviation as driving force’

Recently Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said the state was looking at an alternate site for the proposed Navi Mumbai airport. Does investing in a second international airport in Mumbai, and international airports in tier-2 cities and smaller towns like Mangalore, Bagdogra, Kannur (proposed), Aranmula (proposed), Nagpur, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Lucknow, and Varanasi, make sense?

Air India decides to lift cargo from Trichy

Trichy:  The Air India Express has finally decided to lift cargo from Trichy airport, though in small quantities. The national carrier's Chennai-based general manager (commercial) Ramaiah Radhakrishan who was briefly in Trichy on Tuesday told TOI that the first consignment would be officially lifted in the AXB-611 taking off for Dubai around 1.10 am on Wednesday.
Exporters from the region have been demanding Air India Express to lift cargo for long, and after the grounding of Mihin Lanka from April this year, the cry for cargo became strident. Traders are unhappy over the cancellation of Mihin Lanka because it gave the much-needed gulf connectivity from Colombo. Since most of the exports are perishables, the Sri Lankan is the preferred carrier since it is the only airline that connects to most of the destinations in Europe and the Middle East.

Guwahati airport slashes charges to take on Kolkata

New Delhi: Kolkata airport could soon face stiff competition from Guwahati airport in attracting international flights.
Guwahati has announced a uniform set of charges for both international and domestic passengers and airlines to make more use of the capacity of the airport.
Sector regulator Airports Economic Regulatory Authority has approved the new rates last week, which will come into effect from January 1, 2014, in the first year.
"This is the first time in India that any airport has kept uniform charges for both international and domestic passengers. As part of our endeavour to promote regional connectivity in the country, we had asked for uniform charges to bring in more international airlines to Guwahati. The airport is also strategic in terms of its location," said a senior Airports Authority of India (AAI) official, on condition of anonymity.

Automatic storage system at Chennai airport offers speed, but what of volumes?

Chennai: An 8,000-tonne Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) at Chennai airport is expected to speed up cargo clearance and drive volumes. But freight forwarders and industry representatives are sceptical as glitches in the system prevent full capacity utilisation.
Chennai airport now has the largest ASRS system, fully automated and capable of storing and retrieving tonnes of cargo in a matter of minutes, a process that would have taken hours if done manually.
At the cargo terminal, it is just past lunch and and workers are busy loading cargo. Inside the terminal, 17-m tall ASRS and four automated horizontal carousels move on a circular track with cargo bins sorting the cargo.
Once the import cargo is received from the aircraft, it is stored in 1.3-tonne capacity ASRS bin. An operator keys the bin number and the carton’s barcode and specifies the cell’s location for storage. The carousel picks up the bin and stops at an aisle where a fixed-aisle stacker crane takes the bin to the vertical storage system and places the bin with the cargo in the designated cell.

Kerala govt, KGS misled Forest Ministry over airport: AHVAC

Pathanamthitta: The State government and the KGS Group, a private company, managed to obtain environment clearance for the Aranmula airport project by furnishing totally misleading and false information to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), the Aranmula Heritage Village Action Council (AHVAC) has alleged.

IndiGo may cancel two flights during runway re-carpeting work

Nagpur:  Re-carpeting of Nagpur airport runway might result in cancellation of two IndiGo flights that operate during block timing of 10.30 am to 4.30 pm. The two flights are flight 6E 135 Nagpur-Pune that departs at 11.15am and flight 6E 196 Nagpur-Delhi via Mumbai that takes off at 1.20pm.
The airline officially maintains it has not arrived at a decision yet and that the matter is under consideration. This delay seems strange since the airline has already effected a change in some other flights from Nagpur airport for changes to happen in January 2014 following a notice to airmen (NOTAM) issued at Pune. As the re-carpeting work begins on December 15, if the airline does cancel the flights, passengers already booked on the flights will have to be informed sufficiently ahead so they can make alternative arrangements.

Chandigarh airport to remain closed on two Sundays each month

Chandigarh: To carry out maintenance of its 20 year-old runaway, the Chandigarh Airport will remain closed to all flights after 1 pm on the first and third Sunday of every month. This is likely to continue till the airport gets a runway re-laid which, according to sources, is at least a year away.
Sources at the Air Force Station said the decision had been taken after a meeting with the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in which it was pointed out that the runway was severely "damaged" and needed constant repair and maintenance to keep it operational. The choice was between shutting down the airport completely for over a month or carry out need-based repairs for which two Sundays have been set aside every month.

Smuggling on despite tight security

Trichy: The airport officials are leaving no stone unturned in catching lawbreakers, including smugglers. Recently, the airport acquired a special sniffer dog team comprising four dogs to boost security.

Smuggling picks up in Trichy airport

Trichy: The airport here may not be drawing a large number of travellers as larger ones in metros, but it is witnessing a steady rise in smuggling cases. The regular seizure of contraband items, including drugs, of late points to a spurt in smuggling through the airport which serves the central districts of the state.
Senior officials from the customs department said gold smuggling is showing a steady rise after the government imposed severe restrictions on the import of gold.
Since March this year, at least five incidents of drug seizures were reported from the airport. Interestingly, most passengers caught with drugs were either proceeding to or coming from Malaysia, the officials said. A 25-year-old man was arrested at the airport on Sunday for possessing 1.75 kg of amphetamine, a psychotropic drug.

Better vision but no flights

Ludhiana: After the DVOR started functioning at Sahnewal airport, people expected frequency of flights to and from the city to improve. But many flights have been cancelled even after the operationalization of the instrument.
DVOR or Doppler Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Range, is an instrument which reduces the visibility requirement for landing from 5,000 meters to 2,400 meters improving the chances of landing even during inclement weather when the visibility is low. Earlier, the lone flight operator, Air India, cancelled flights saying the visibility requirement of around 5 kms left them with no option but to cancel flights due to low visibility. But now that the DVOR is working, flights are still being cancelled and that too at a time when there is not much fog.

Now take this: An International Airport where only ATR-42 can operate

The recent awarding of Environmental Clearance for the controversial airport project at Aranmula, Kerala, is nothing less than a joke.
The gist of the proposal, M/s KGS Aranmula Airport Ltd had placed before Ministry of Environment & Forests was this:
“Development of Airport at Mallappuzhasserry, Aranmula and Kidangannur villages, Kozhencherry Taluk, Patthanamthitta District, Kerala on a plot area of 500 Acres to cater to air bus A – 300 aircraft. The length of the run-way in the first phase will be 2800 mtr. x 45 mtr. Construction will have G+1 floor of terminal building of 1250 sq.m. in phase I and 15000 sq.m. in phase II.”
And what the Ministry now permits to build?
From the approval letter the ministry has sent to the promoters:
10. SPECIFIC CONDITIONS:
(iii) Though the site is not a wetland, in view of the presence of various plants species, Proponent shall fill only minimum area required for runway, apron, taxiway etc and the remaining area will be preserved in its natural form as committed. Only the area required for runway 1000 x 150 mts shall be filled with 1 mt height…”
That is, the total length of the runway basic strip is only 1000 m.  Because it is mandatory to leave 90 m on both ends of the runway as RESA (Runway End Safety Area),  the total effective length of the runway  will be 180 m less.
So what is the length of runway  KGS people are actually getting instead of the 2800 m they asked for ?
Just this much: 1000-180 = 820 m
And what kind of an aircraft will be able operate from this 820 m runway?
That is the most difficult question the promoters will have to find an answer for themselves- that is, if they really are determined to build an airport at Aranmula.
The smallest aircraft scheduled airlines have in these parts of the world is ATR-42-300. The minimum runway length (Take off field length) required for this 45 seater turbo prop aircraft is 1040 m. But this is for a runway at sea level altitude, with no wind along the runway and with an atmospheric  temperature of 15 degrees Celsius. When the temperature and elevation are higher, runway length required would be more. With wind also, the aircraft would require to run longer.
So the only option left for the airlines would be to operate the ATR with a load penalty – that is with reduced capacity.

Study on for Navi Mumbai Airport's Plan Sea

Belapur: Even as ‘uncertainty’ prevails over the viability of the proposed international airport in Navi Mumbai, thanks to opposition from a section of project-affected persons (PAPs), City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) has finalised another option for the mega project. The body, however, maintained that its priority is to ensure that the proposed airport comes up at the original location.
“As announced by the chief minister, a Netherlands-based company has been entrusted with the job of conducting a feasibility study for a project along the Panvel creek by setting up an island there. The company in question has been instrumental in turning such projects into reality in other countries, and has confirmed that it is feasible in Navi Mumbai also. The Dutch company conducted a preliminary study and an advanced study pertaining to setting up an island along the creek will be over in the next six months. It will take 3-4 years for the company to set up the island, after which the construction of the airport will begin. But, this is just an alternate plan since we want the project to come up on land,” Bhatia added.

Flying blind: Weather radars fail, pilots look out for clouds

Chennai:  Cruising at more than 30,000 feet at a speed of more than 700kmph in the middle of night a fortnight ago, the captain and first officer of an Air India's A320 aircraft took turns to look out for patches of clouds on the flight path as the plane's weather radar had conked off. And then, the captain spotted a white patch reflecting moonlight. They diverted the flight just in time to avoid a possible turbulence.
This scenario has been repeating in cockpits of a few Air India flights at night, as weather radars of almost 17 aircraft have been erratic for the last two months. Under pressure to maintain schedules, flight engineers run a test on the ground and clear the aircraft for service.
An Air India official said, "There were problems with weather radars on a few aircraft. Antennas were changed as and when pilots complained. The snag may also be due to change in weather radar technology. The equipment may not be compatible. Several of our old planes have been phased out. Air India will soon get 19 new A320 on dry lease." Director general of civil aviation Arun Mishra told TOI that the matter had not come to his notice.

GVK in race for Navi Mumbai airport project

The Assembly committee comprising nine members had unanimously prepared its report with recommendations, after holding detailed hearing and taking evidence from the people, government officials, and various organisations.

Exporters livid after junking perishable cargo

Trichy:  Exporters in Trichy region are livid as their perishable goods had to be returned for lack of phytosanitary documents. For instance, a consignment of 2.5 tonnes of assorted vegetables from Madurai was sent back, while two tonnes of export quality vegetables from Karur were sold in the local market at throwaway prices on Friday.
The question that was raised in cargo circles on Friday was why a replacement was not sanctioned in time after plant quarantine officer G S Giri was transferred to Coimbatore on Monday. Since there is no definitive notification coming from the directorate of plant protection, quarantine and storage in Faridabad, authorizing anyone to sign the quarantine papers, exporters of perishables were in further dilemma because the perishables had to be exported within a given time frame.

Madurai Malli on maiden flight to Dubai

Madurai: The maiden flight from Madurai to Dubai took off at 11.35 p.m. on Friday and what it carried apart from 158 elated passengers is something that provides the authentic scent of the soil – ‘Madurai Malli,’ a jasmine variety with Geographical Indication tag.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) could not have chosen a better day to inaugurate a stall to sell ‘Madurai Malli’ at the departure end of the airport terminal building than Friday when the airport was all set to begin night operations with the introduction of a direct flight to Dubai.
Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan inaugurated the stall given on lease to S. Nagarathinam and Sons, one of the leading exporters of jasmine from here. The firm had obtained rights to sell the flowers inside the terminal building for three years.
Passengers could purchase 1.5-metre flower strand packed in a colourful box for Rs.100 each.

Shimoga, Gulbarga airport promoters may exit

Bangalore: The failure among existing promoters of Shimoga and Gulbarga greenfield airport projects to reconcile their positions with one of them suing the other for compensation of Rs 3,300 crore in two separate cases could well lead to the Karnataka government handing over the projects to new entities.A source at the infrastructure development department (IDD) of the state government that is monitoring the two projects, told Deccan Herald, “We have initiated the process to look at replacing the existing promoters, given the fighting between the two promoters.”
Chairman of Regional Airport-Holdings International (RAHI) Umesh Kumar Baveja said, “It is highly unlikely that the stalled projects will be revived, termination looks like a fait accompli.”
The legal consultant to the two projects, V G Hiremath declined to comment on the state government mulling termination.

Navi Mumbai airport tender process in December

Navi Mumbai:  The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) on Friday said that it will go ahead with the global tender for the Rs 15,000-crore proposed Navi Mumbai airport project in the first week of December despite eight villages rejecting the compensation package offered for their land.

He stressed that the compensation package offered to the villagers will not change, and added that "if everything goes as planned, the first phase of the airport will be ready in December 2017".
Cidco has already acquired 2,288 hectares of land and has to get 271 hectares. But eight villages have rejected the deal that was finalized between their representatives and the government on November 11.

AAI considers pulling plug on credit to Jet, SpiceJet

New Delhi: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) might stop all credit facilities to Jet Airways and SpiceJet, putting both in ‘cash-and-carry’ mode if they fail to clear unpaid dues, of a combined Rs 250 crore.
A meeting between the managements of Jet and SpiceJet with senior AAI officials is scheduled for Monday.
Both airlines have struggled to meet operational costs, with a sharp increase in those on fuel and in dollar-denominated expenses. Sources in AAI say SpiceJet has been inconsistent in clearing airport dues over the past six months, while Jet has not been making timely payments over the past year.
SpiceJet, however, ruled out the possibility of being put in ‘cash-and-carry’ mode as its dues were covered within the bank guarantee. “It is business as usual. Our outstanding is within the credit policy of AAI. We regularly meet AAI as part of our normal business,” said Sam Isaac, chief financial officer, SpiceJet. Isaac said the airline has never been put on ‘cash-and-carry’ by AAI. Jet Airways did not comment on the matter.

Bangalore airport ready for satellite navigation

Bangalore: Passengers from Bangalore airport will get to depart and arrive on time on almost every flight as a satellite-based navigation system, as against a ground-based system, will ensure there are no delays in landing, long queues of aircraft to land or take off, delays in take-off and extended hovering.
Bangalore airport is ready for the system, GPS Aided Geo Augmented Navigation or GAGAN, which is set to begin operations December-end. The system is being implemented both by Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Isro. AAI and Isro both confirmed the December target for GAGAN.
Isro, which is implementing this satellite-based navigation, has said tests are currently underway by AAI to check information flow between Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the flights to ensure that the satellite signals coming to an aircraft are being received correctly. The airport too will receive signals from the satellite and so it will be a three-way communication - between satellite, airport and aircraft.

Connecting flight hours away? Rent a 'bedroom' at international airport

Mumbai: Waiting for your connecting international flight? Now, no need to need to yawn or break your neck nodding off on the airport benches. The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) has placed ‘sleeping cubicles’ at the T-2C Mezzanine.
Airport officials said the cubicles, which have been made in Germany, have a noise-proof mechanism, which will cut down the chaos and hustle-bustle inside the airport so that passengers can relax or work in a comfortable environment before continuing the journey.
Passengers will have to pay for the time spent inside a cubicle, apart from certain minimum fees.
A similar system is already in place at other airports in the world, such as at Munich in Germany.

IGI airport implements pro-active steps to minimise fog delays

New Delhi: Authorities at the Indira Gandhi International Airport Friday said that they have implemented pro-active measures to minimise inconvenience to passengers due to the upcoming fog season.
"The true game changer this fog season would be the introduction of Delhi Airport Collaborative Decision Making (DA-CDM)," said I.Prabhakara Rao, chief executive of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the company which manages the IGIA.
"A move that would allow us to recover much faster at the time of flight disruptions during low visibility condition."
The DA-CDM is a system which works by collating all the stake-holders inputs like that from airport operator, Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), through an automated system to increase overall airport efficiency.
The data is then used to plan optimum utilisation of ATC resources, runways for reducing workload of ATC controllers and ground delays.
The information is also passed on to airlines and passengers.

Export operations hit in Trichy airport

Trichy:  The export activities at Trichy international airport came to a standstill all of a sudden on Friday morning due to the unavailability of plant quarantine officer at the cargo section. After the officer, who issues the mandatory phytosanitary certificates for export, was transferred to Coimbatore on November 18, the airport is yet to get a replacement.
Though, G S Giri, the last incumbent at Trichy airport, was relieved on last Monday, perishables were exported as usual to Colombo, Kuala Lumpur and to Singapore from Monday to Thursday, though there was no one to sign the quarantine papers. However, the fact that exports continued for four days without certification documents came to light when the export operations came to a standstill on Thursday morning.

Jet Airways cancels its daily service from Chennai to Colombo

Colombo: India's largest domestic airline Jet Airways announced today that it will cancel its daily service between the Southern hub at Chennai and Sri Lanka's Colombo international airport.
The longstanding daily one hour-twenty-minute flight operated with Boeing 737-800 equipment will be cancelled from 3rd January, 2014.
However, the domestic carrier will continue to serve Colombo from its largest hub at Mumbai.
India's aviation observers say the Jet Airways' decision is a bit of a surprise, given that the India-Sri Lanka market, especially with regards to inbound medical tourism at Chennai, remains robust.
However, Sri Lanka's souring relations with India, especially with the state of Tamil Nadu, has seriously affected the number of Sri Lankans travelling to Chennai for tourism.

Birds pose threat to aviation safety at Coimbatore Airport

Coimbatore: With nearly five incidents of bird hit in the last one month and two during the last one week, threat of bird hit seems to be looming large for flights landing and taking off at Coimbatore Airport.
An international flight scheduled for mid-night departure was delayed for nearly three-and-a-half hours during this week, while another domestic aircraft was also delayed because of bird hit. Unusually, there was a bird hit menace at night in the recent times, sources in airport said.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials at the Coimbatore Airport have been managing the situation by firing more crackers and with extensive use of gas powered Zone guns (that emits sound at frequent intervals) to scare birds, says D. Paul Manickam, Coimbatore Airport Director.
He added that additional bird chasers have been deployed along the runway to chase the birds when the flights land and take off. The measures are closely co-ordinated with the Air Traffic Control, officials said. In addition, all agencies concerned have been requested for sterilising the areas in the periphery of the airport.

Dense fog to hit air operations at IGI between Dec 23-Jan 7: IMD

New Delhi: Dense fog conditions are likely to hit the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) between December 23 and January 7, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
To ensure passenger convenience and minimise flight delays, the IGIA will, for the first time, have a Delhi Airport Collaborative Decision Making (DA-CDM) system, which will display the exact time when the fog will lift so that aircraft in queue for take-off and arrival can be informed in advance. This will help solve boarding issues at the terminal, officials said.
Director-in-charge of IMD (IGIA) R K Jenamani said, “This year, dense fog conditions are likely to hit IGIA between December 23 and January 7. The fog conditions will prevail only for 15 days as opposed to 20 days last year. Flight operations will be affected during this period.”

Direct flight to Dehradun on the cards

Allahabad: After the introduction of a direct flight between Allahabad and Mumbai recently, the focus has now shifted to starting another direct flight from the city to Dehradun, the capital of hill state Uttarakhand. This is in the wake of poor rail connectivity between the two cities and unexpectedly large number of commuters, claimed Samajwadi Party (SP) national general secretary and Allahabad MP, Reoti Raman Singh.
Talking to TOI, he said that he has held talks with union minister for civil aviation, Ajit Singh and chairman, Indian Airlines in this connection, and they give favourable overtures towards the proposal. This means a direct flight between Allahabad and Dehradun may become a reality soon.
He said until now, the two cities are connected by the lone train Sangam Express which takes more than 22 hours to cover the distance of around 700 km.

Gold seized in Thiruvananthapuram airport, customs suspect insider’s role

Thiruvananthapuram: A passenger from Dubai was detained at the airport here with two kilograms of gold on Thursday.
The seizure has led to the suspicion that the man, Basheer Shamsudheen, was operating in connivance with an airport insider, officials said.
Kozhikode resident Shamsudheen who arrived by an Emirates flight headed to a washroom exclusively set aside for use by customs and immigration officials oblivious of the fact that he was being watched.
Officials intercepted him when he left the customs area. On frisking they found two gold bars each weighing a kilogram each concealed in mobile phone covers.
Shamsudheen reportedly told his interrogators that a contact whose identity he was unaware of was to approach him in the washroom. The contact, he was told, would ask him, Are you Kunhali? He was then supposed to hand over the gold to the contact which made the customs suspect that the contact could be an insider.

India - people resist airport land grabs

Rural communities all over India are battling against a land grab of epic proportions. And one of the biggest causes of land grabs is for airports to support India's domestic aviation boom. Rose Bridger reports from Kerala, where four new 'green field' airports are meeting stiff local resistance.
One important aspect of the land grab is airport expansion, and new airports. There are ambitious projects at various stages of planning, approval and construction all over India. New airports on undeveloped sites, are called 'greenfield' airports. The requisite road network and associated land developments often extend the airport footprint over a far wider area.
Three greenfield airports are planned in Kerala, one of the smallest states in India - at Aranmula, Wayanad and Anakkara. All three sites consists of biodiverse wetlands and paddy fields where farmers cultivate rice and other crops. Plans for a proposed airport at Aranmula encompass four villages - Aranmula, Mallappuzhasserry, Mezhuveli and Kidangannur.
Fertile, biodiverse wetlands which would be paved over are surrounded by densely forested hills, which would be levelled off. More than 40 hectares have already been filled in, using earth from a nearby hillock.
Satellite images show the pale brown strip in sharp contrast to the vast expanse of lush green surrounding it. The disruption caused to irrigation and flood control is an indication of the disastrous ecological consequences should the airport be built.
About 3,000 families may face eviction. The campaign against the airport is led by the Aranmula Heritage Village Action Council and there have been major protests for more than two years, including rallies, fasting, an attempt to storm into the developers' office and a human chain of hundreds of people.

Tendering for Navi Mumbai airport project may be delayed

Navi Mumbai: The global tendering process for the proposed international airport project, which is scheduled for the first week of December, may be delayed because of the existing face-off between villagers and the committee over land acquisition.
A source said, "The process looks doubtful now, as bidders won't be encouraged till all the hurdles are cleared."
Even 10 days after the villagers and the committee arrived at a consensus, there has still been no breakthrough in the impasse with people from eight of the villages opposed to the compensation.
The government's stand of 'take it or leave it' is now juxtaposed with "no new deal, no land," as pointed out by Mahendra Patil, sarpanch of Pargaon village panchayat, who is spearheading the opposition.
